Read-a-Thon #3 - Team Turtle's Battleship Strategy Topic
Hello Team Turtle! I hope you guys are as excited about this challenge as I am. I think it's going to be a lot of fun. I'll be keeping track of our guesses (hits and misses) on this text board. I'll update the graphic board above each time we take a whole ship out. I'll also use this space to keep track of how many guesses each member has earned and has used so we can properly strategize. Go Team Turtle!(_)(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)(F)(G)(H)(I)(J)

Hi, this is my second readathon and I'm really excited! I still have six books left for my Around the year challenge so I'm going to try to read some of those for the challenges. I'm planning on finishing a book that I've already started, a biography in swedish, since that's due back to the library soon. I have a lot of books out from the library right now so I want to read some of those and most of them should fit with at least one of the challenges. Of course I will read whatever fits with the challenges so we reach the goal. Hope everyone is excited!
Oh, this is really cool! I am excited!I have one book to finish for my challenge - half done Algorithms to Live By: What Computers Can Teach Us About Solving Human Problems. This is for the hobby/passion category - bit of a cheat because it is more of an interest, but the only real hobby I have right now is reading, and that topic is redundant. This is also a book published in 2016, and is valid for the Goodreads 2016 Choice Award also, and a very long title!
My other books I am reading are unlikely to be finished this week - Anna Karenina, The Canterbury Tales, but the second is on audio so it will count for that. It has 3.48 rating, if I finish it. I will have to go to the library and get some shorter ones!
Ok, I have finished Providence. I read for 2 hrs straight. The book fits the categorries: book started before readathon, written by female author, part of my ATY challenge, part of a series, set during winter, set in the country I reside in. Put it in whichever category needs filling I guess, lol.
I'm with you, guys. I work nights and sleep during the day so thank you for being patient with me. You can pick whatever categories you want for your books, Jennifer. The categories are all repeatable this year and can be done by multiple members so there's no need to shuffle books around or worry about whose reading what for which category. The only thing we have to track are the ones with the stars because they're mostly team cooperative and have limits.
In any event, it looks like you've earned two guesses. I'll put that up top and just let me know when you want to use them. You're the first to earn guesses so there isn't much to strategize yet. :D
We also get a guess for every member of our team that does all 7 Read-a-Thon Games (Plus the Kick-Off and Wrap Up Questionnaires). I'm keeping track of that too. If I participated in a game and I miss you, just let me know.
It's a different Sam. But if you want to be on a team, just sign up over here and we'll get you set up. All the game info and rules are over here.
Awesome, I just went and added a Z (my middle initial) to my profile to hopefully clear up and avoid some confusion :)
Perfect! I was just going to call you Sam with the Cute Baby! ;D Sam's a popular name, I guess. Team Sea Horses has SamF.
Emm wrote: "Perfect! I was just going to call you Sam with the Cute Baby! ;D"Would that she still were! She's now a cute 7 year old!
I could certainly take on a Manga, if someone else wants to volunteer to read the other. I read quite a bit of manga, but I'd hate to waste time, since it needs two members to get a guess.
J, I'm planning on reading The Walking Dead, Book One so if you're wanting to read a manga that should get us the guess. :)
I have listened to 8 hours of Long Walk to Freedom It can count toward the audiobook task, or a book started before the readathon.I have also started reading The Name of the Wind It can count as a book for the ATY challenge, a book with an article in the title, a fantasy book or a book in a series.
Hey I just finished The Fade Out: Act One which we can use for the graphic novel or since it looks like two people are planning to read Manga we can put it under Read a Book Published Outside the Major 5 Publishers, it was published by Image Comics, Inc.
I am in this group and this is my first read-a-thon with this group.I may need to ask questions as I go. lol
I just finished a book in swedish, För mycket av allt, which can count for a book by a swedish author, set in the country I reside in, a book published in 2016 and a book I started before the readathon. Should I just pick one?
Okay, we have completed the Books Started Before the Read-a-Thon task. I gave Jennifer a guess for this already without thinking because she was the first to contribute to it. I momentarily forgot we only get the guess if we complete the whole task, i.e. 3 people finished a book. So we'll just let Jennifer's second guess stand as our guess for completing that task. It was a very good guess. She got us a hit!Mimmi, you can pick whatever you want. Mostly we just need to know which categories with the stars your books match up with so we can accumulate as a team. You've earned 1 guess for whatever non-starred category you pick and helped us finish our Started Before the Read-a-Thon task.
Sarah, you get one guess also. We'll go with Book Published Outside the Major 5 Publishers. :D
I finished Dash & Lily's Book of Dares. I started this before the read-a-thon, it is one of my ATY books, and I'm adding it to the group reading map. It also counts as a book set in winter. I get one guess for that. Since I know the answers, I can't use my guess. It will be up to the team to decide where to use my guesses. :D I suggest we save them till the end to see where we end up, but it's totally up to you guys.
Sarah and Mimmi, if you want to use your guesses now, let me know.
Don't forget to tell me your pages read too, guys. We can start building up to 4,000 pages for another guess! And when/if you finish 3 books, you'll get a guess.
It counts as a book started before the readathon for the star categories. I'll save the guess for now. I also read 110 pages in total for today.
I have also posted in the kick-off. I will post a page total at the end of each day. All of my books are from the AtY challenge. I don't usually do audiobooks, so I am not planning on that but I can give it a try if we need to as a group.Emm, how does "read the rainbow" work?
We have to read a book with a cover that matches each color of the rainbow. It can be overlapped with other tasks so if any of the books you have read already or plan to read have colored covers, we can get credit for it.Unfortunately, the only book I've read so far has a multi-colored cover.
But here's an example of a reading rainbow...
I hadn't actually found my Manga book (to read) yet, and have been working on finishing the book I was reading coming into the Read-a-thon.So, just let me know. If we have our two graphic novels, then I will shift my focus elsewhere. Since we completed the 'finish a book you started before' prompt, is my book still able to count elsewhere, or should I set aside my book in favor of something which will?
J, that book would still count as a finished book. It may also fit some of the other categories we need to cover.
I've just read for 2 hours non-stop however haven't finished the book yet, does that still count?I am reading Four: A Divergent Story Collection.
Melanie - Yeah, it counts toward our group total. We won't get a guess until we, as a group, have 10 hours read straight. You will personally get a guess when the book is finished also. J, the book could still count for other categories. Keep reading. :)
The first day is always a little hectic as people are figuring out the game but as the week goes on you'll be a pro! :D
Well I got 150 pages in so far today. Not sure if i'll get more because i'm watching my Packers play right now.
I have listened to 5 hours of my audio book, The Silkworm today and also read 171 pages between The Fade Out: Act One and Death at Victoria Dock
My total for today is 50 pages of Anna Karenina and 30 minutes of listening to The Canterbury Tales. For some reason I barely have time on readathon days!
I read 53 pages of Naked in Death and 6 pages of Harry Potter (before bed to my daughter). Also I read 19 essays written by 7th graders, but those don't count as literature so my page total for the day is 59.
Just finished Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth.I finished it in one sitting and my page count is 285 pages.
It fits the following categories: one worded title and Dystopian genre.
Okay, I believe I have everything updated from my last check in. We're making progress and I have a feeling this is going to be a big day for us! Melanie, you've earned two guesses. One for reading the book in one sitting and one for the other category (either dystopian or one-word title). Let me know when you're ready to use them.
We've got a hit on the board and the potential to sink a ship.
