Michelle (michellebowles) | 10 comments I'm currently reading these fascinating books that have one for men and one for women called List to Love by for Busy Wives and the other for Busy Husbands. I'm reading the one for guys right now and I'm really sitting back getting a great perspective. There are so many married people out there who are looking for ways to build better, its worth checking these out.

John Winston (johndarrylwinston) Beyond Farwin Wood (Blinney Lane, #2) by Drea Damara I like to sprinkle in Indie authors with traditional ones. Digging into Beyond Farwin Wood (Blinney Lane Book 2) by Drea Damara. So far so good.

April Cote (avrilnc11) I just finished Revival by Stephen King last night. I really enjoyed it. I started Salem's Lot. It's a classic and has been on my to read list forever.

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) April wrote: " I started Salem's Lot."

I love Salem's Lot.

I actually enjoyed both adaptations. The original with David Soul I probably enjoy more because of nostalgia (and it's probably creepier), but the more-maligned one starring Rob Lowe was actually much closer to the book and enjoyable, as well.

The book is one of my favourite (and earliest) vampire novels. Up there with Interview with the Vampire, Lost Souls, They Thirst, and The Light at the End (almost certainly my top vampire novel).

message 108: by Janelle (new)

Janelle (jebarton) I just started reading The Harsh Cry of the Heron by Lian Hearn, the last book in the Tales of the Otori series. If anyone has any recommendations for actual Japanese historical fiction, please share!

I'm also reading "We Stand on Guard," a graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan. (I picked up the first two single issues of this last year, but never finished the series.)

I just finished Saigon Dark by Elka Ray which is a good psychological thriller set in Vietnam. It's got a wonderfully damaged 'heroine' and I was gripped pretty much throughout.

Hi, Michelle, I have had several research opportunities with various NASA projects over the years, and I have had the good fortune to visit with some of the later classes of astronauts, but I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Glenn. My impression of him was not changed by reading the biography I mentioned in my short post, in fact it was amplified and deepened. His pre-NASA history included several tours of combat in Korea and World War II. He was active in flight test for several years prior to his Mercury mission on Friendship 7 of the MA-7 mission. His service to our country was heightened by his service of 4 terms in the United States Senate from his home state of Ohio. He was probably one of the most memorable of the characters that Tom WolfeT wrote about in The Right Stuff and as was Ed Harris' portrayal in the movie of the same name. He was devoted to Annie, his wife, and she did survive him even though she was a bit older than he. It was a loss, certainly to me, I remember watching the entire flight as a child who was enamored with all things space flight oriented. It was magical for me. As the various accidents happened, I was amazed with how professionally the investigations were made and the findings resulting in the changes that made the flights safer, even though flight and spaceflight especially is one of the most risky of test flying there is. He was dedicated to having additional input into the space program which was the reason he flew on the shuttle at the age of 85 to participate in having aging studied to help with planning for longer term missions the benefactor of the studies he carried out for the space program both pre-, during, and post-launch. He was a truly intrepid aviator, a proud Marine veteran, a gifted astronaut and Senator, and his life was full, rich, and devoted to his incredible wife. Would that we could all have that sort of legacy to our credit. While I have been a public servant as a professional public educator in Texas for 35 years, I am now retied, and writing as a full time hobby, which might pay off one of these days, maybe. Not as pubic a figure as Mr. Glenn, but happily married for 40+ years, father to a professional public educator, and proud family of a rescued cat and a rescued dog.

My final feeling about Mr. Glenn's passing -- would that we could all be so fortunate to live a life as full of patriotism, devotion, and thoughtful, prayerful service. He was truly an American with all of the right stuff that it takes to make one of the honest American heroes of all time, in my honest opinion.

Hope that helps and I hope you have a marvelous first week of 2017.

Richard Buro
Temple, TX USA

Lulu (lulureads365) I'm currently reading Precious and Grace by Alexander McCall Smith. I absolutely LOVE this series!

And I'm making my way through Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult, I'm a little sensitive to this subject matter and it's taking me longer than I would have thought to finish this book.

John Winston (johndarrylwinston) Just finished Witchy Girls The Rise to Power by Lani Brown by Lani Brown. It was fun. I'm digging into Persuasion by Jane Austen by Jane Austen which is a little slow but coming around and Anansi Boys (American Gods, #2) by Neil Gaiman by Neil Gaiman which is quite intriguing so far.

Martha (marthas48) I've started Anansi Boys & am finishing up listening to Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. Both are very funny reads. Several laugh-out-loud moments in GO, even when I had to restart & listen again. This has been a rough year for our family & at first I just couldn't concentrate on it so I set it aside. I would listen & then when I went back to it, I didn't have a clue where I was in the story. LOL I can see that these 2 by Neil Gaiman (one of my favorite authors) are perfect for me now. I need them.

I don't want anyone to feel bad, but my youngest son died earlier this year & the holidays have been hard. His birthday will be next month & I'm already dreading it. I get really weepy. Hope it will be somewhat better after we get through these first milestones without him. His ex-wife has been wonderful to let us have his daughter (she's 9) as often as possible. He was a single parent with full custody & lived 10 blocks from us, so everyone's life changed so drastically.

I'm reading some others, too. I always have 10 or so going, but usually just concentrate on about 3 regularly. The other 2 that are occupying most of my attention right now are The Bazaar of Bad Dreams (another favorite author) & The Hypnotist ... very violent. I worked with behavior disordered teens at a residential facility for several years and could really see this happening. Scary, scary!

I read Persuasion a couple of years ago so I'm not going to read it again now. I do want to check in on the thread though. I thought that maybe this year I'll read Sense and Sensibility. I've never read it or Mansfield Park

Hope y'all had a great new year!

So sorry to hear about your loss, Martha. Sending positive vibes and prayer your way, my friend. I'm glad you've joined us on Anansi Boys, and your input on Persuasion is greatly appreciated (believe me :-). You, like me, are reading many books at once. Let me know how it goes.

Great reads guys. I'm still plugging away at Persuasion and Anansi Boys.

message 140: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) Thanks for your kind comments, John, Ipuna & Magpie67. They are truly appreciated.

Well, I finished Good Omens, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams & The Hypnotist ... all 3 excellent reads for fantasy, horror &/or mystery/thriller lovers.

My current reads are On What Grounds by Cleo Coyle (being a coffee lover, I'm enjoying the info on coffee & the mystery), Murder on the Eiffel Tower by Claude Izner (not crazy about this one so probably won't continue the series) & just started The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen (2nd in this series ... loved the 1st one so hoping this one is as good).

Also, continuing with Anansi Boys ... really enjoying it.

Jennifer, I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale in another group ... just want to finish one more of my others before I start it. I've never read it. Have you? Several of my friends are reading it a 2nd time (or 3rd ... ) I'm really interested in your thoughts on it.

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) Finished off Anansi Boys and on with The Colour of Magic, by Terry Pratchett. My first Pratchett book. Seems apropos, following a Gaiman book.

John Winston (johndarrylwinston) I'm reading our group reads and Under Ground by Alice Rachel.

Jennifer (jbourguignon1) | 27 comments Martha, I have finished The Handmaid's Tale - it was written in a sort of stream of consciousness style which sounds like it would be hard to read but it was not. It was enjoyable and worth the time. A kind of post-apocalyptic novel.

Ooh, Jennifer, stream of consciousness? I love it. I may have to partake.

message 145: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) I have wanted to read it for a long time, Jennifer. So many love it.

John, have you read Gilead? It is written the same way. I started it several months ago & then misplaced it. I think I last saw it in the garage. (You know you have too many books when they start spilling into the garage.) It won the Pulitzer, I believe. I love that author. She wrote one of my favorites... Housekeeping.

Angela I'm currently reading Deadhouse Gates . I am loving the world Steven Erikson has created. Also onto Dead Beat by Jim Butcher. I'm slowing working my way through both these series. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that both books I'm reading have dead in the title.
