Biggest Let Down: Go the Fuck to Sleep (which I read for the discard topic: 'A Children's Book with an Animal on the Cover'), how can a book be bad with such a solid title?
Best Dressed: The Halloween Tree
See:

An honorable mention goes to Kindred because that cover model is smokin' hot.
Best Characters: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Chief Bromden is the best. Honorable mention for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as I am looking forward to more adventures with Dunk and Egg.
Best Laugh: This was P. G. Wodehouse's Something Fresh. Humor it was not lacking.
Best Cry: I didn't read anything that would make me cry this time around. But the lowest point, the stomach sinking feeling you get when you realize that something awful has occurred, was in The Running Man.
Best Scare: Misery certainly. That's just too realistic to not get caught up in.
Best Love: I really need to remember to read a book with a romance plot, as I always come up short for this award. That said, I'm giving it to Something Fresh.
Best Shock: A lot of my books had unexpected turns but I'm giving this to The Fifth Head of Cerberus for having at least three twists that I could not have foreseen.
Best Author: Octavia E. Butler. Come on, ya'll knew she was going to get this.
Best Series: Still Maya Angelou's autobiography series. I read All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes and A Song Flung Up To Heaven this quarter.
Best Read: Kindred by a mile.

Breakout Read - The Audition by Rachel Hartman
No one is more surprised than I am that a "book" with 17 pages was the most surprisingly delightful "book" I've read in three months. I'm not sure I've ever read a more perfect short story. I'm so excited to read the Seraphina series because of it.
Biggest Let Down - The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine
This started out really good. There is a scene in the beginning where the main character stumbles upon something truly horrific as a result of the kingdom being ruled by her stepmother (a Snow White re-telling, and all that). When I read it, I was convinced that this book was going to have chops. I was convinced I would love this. Instead of flourishing, as I'd predicted it would, it developed into a total snoozer. The author tied up all the conflicts and loose ends in the most convenient and unsatisfying ways. The characters, especially their budding romance, got wearisome. I really had to push myself to finish it.
Best Dressed - Nightbird by Alice Hoffman
It seems every edition of this book has a beautiful cover. I had to share them all with you. Not only is it pretty, it was quite lovely to read.

Best Characters - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
This is a tough one. I wanted to give it to Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer because I cannot get enough of the wildly entertaining Jacky Faber but I had to go with Deathly Hallows. So many of the characters in the HP series are wonderful, memorable, and dear to my heart. The conclusion of the series sees many of the characters coming together for that final battle and it changes so much! Such a brilliant end to that series. Another honorable mention to the AI in Cat Pictures Please by Naomi Kritzer.
Best Laugh - Cat Pictures Please by Naomi Kritzer
This is the 2016 Hugo Award winner in the short story category, I wanted to give it a shot. It was super cute! The humor is subtle and laced throughout.
Best Cry - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
Fred and Dobby rip me to shreds every time I read this book. My poor heart.
Best Scare - The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The sleer are terrifying and I felt the ominous presence of the villainous man Jack throughout. It wasn't really scary, but it was eerie. Honorable mention to Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. Again, I wasn't really scared, but there are some graphic descriptions of zombies eating humans. Gruesome!
Best Love - Curse of the Blue Tattoo: Being an Account of the Misadventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman and Fine Lady by L.A. Meyer
This is another tough one. I thought about giving it to James and Agate from Nightbird because it's such a sweet and innocent kind of love. It's integral to the plot, but since it mostly happens off screen I had to go with, I'm sorry, Jacky and Jaimy from Curse of the Blue Tattoo. Yeah, these two are probably a little young to be in love and betrothed and all that jazz, but they're sweet in their devotion and I'm willing to make allowances since it is historical. In this book they're separated by an ocean and write love letters back and forth while meddlesome adults try to keep them apart. You've got admire their persistance.
Best Shock - What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi Murkoff
I don't really have anything else for this. This book is like an explosion of information about pregnancy that was, at times, shocking and horrifying.
Best Author - Neil Gaiman
I feel very entranced by his writing.
Best Series - Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy and Curse of the Blue Tattoo:
Being an Account of the Misadventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman and Fine Lady by L.A. Meyer
This was a re-read for me. These two books were, at least. I haven't finished the whole series. I highly recommend the audiobooks here - as far as I'm concerned, they're the only way to experience Mary "Jacky" Faber. Katherine Kellgren's performance is flawless and if you don't instantly fall in love with the precocious Jacky, I don't know what to say to you. She's epic!
Best Read - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
*sings* Nothing compares to you...! Seriously, nothing. I am unapologetically obsessed with this series.

Biggest Let Down: The 5th Wave
Best Dressed:

Best Characters: A Thousand Pieces of You
Best Laugh: Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog
Best Cry: Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog
Best Scare: The Girl on the Train
Best Love: The Time Traveler's Wife
Best Shock: The Tenth Gift
Best Author: Lisa Genova
Best Series: A Thousand Pieces of You
Best Read: Still Alice
Breakout Read: All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda
I expected this to be another run-of-the-mill thriller but it ended up having unique writing and I really related to the main character. It had surprising depth and I really enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.
Biggest Let Down: This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp
This was about the opposite of my previous award. I expected to have much more depth and to be more thought-provoking and it ended up being very cookie cutter and surface-level thriller. I found this mostly inappropriate for the subject matter.
Best Dressed:
It just feels very quintessential "summer in a small town" while also having great colors.
Best Characters: You by Caroline Kepnes - the social worker in me was very interested in figuring out both the main characters. Plus, Joe was witty and sarcastic in a wonderful way.
Best Laugh: You by Caroline Kepnes
Joe and I have a similar sense of humor and he pretty much voiced some of my inner thoughts that I would be afraid to state out loud. Granted, his was often to the extreme. But we're similar enough in that way that I often very borderline uncomfortable with our connection.
Best Cry: Columbine by Dave Cullen
Runner-ups: Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives by Thomas French and Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
Best Scare: Columbine by Dave Cullen
As someone who counsels teens in the school setting, this one was definitely unsettling at times.
Best Love: Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
Going through my list made me realize that all of my books in this quarter were very flawed in the romance department. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing because they were more realistic relationships. Some also presented the romance as a background part of the narrative, which was a little refreshing.
Best Shock: Columbine by Dave Cullen - The sheer incompetence surrounding this tragedy was a little disheartening. So many signs were missed, especially by the law enforcement and teachers.
Best Author:You by Caroline Kepnes
The writing was immersive and the style was very unique
Best Series: Endurance by Jack Kilborn
These are very gory, light reads that really work in getting me through a slump. This is the third in the series and the next one is a fun horror approach, where he brings together the survivors of the previous books. I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes.
Best Read: I read some great books this quarter but: You by Caroline Kepnes
I expected this to be another run-of-the-mill thriller but it ended up having unique writing and I really related to the main character. It had surprising depth and I really enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.

Best Read: I read some great books this quarter but: You by Caroline Kepnes

It explored very interesting directions.
Biggest Let Down: Shelter
I'd to DNF it because it was too much horrible and depressing (abuse, abuse and abuse), even if it was well written. I usually don't DNF, I prefer to skip and reach the end, but I started to feel like when I read The Girl on the Train, so no thank you.
Best Dressed:
Few interesting covers for me this quarter, which is unusual. I liked this one:

Best Characters:
I read several books with great characterization, one that touched me the most was Everything I Never Told You (close 2nd: More Happy Than Not and The Smell of Other People's Houses).
Best Laugh: The Categorical Universe of Candice Phee
I really enjoyed the smart kid and her way to comment the world :)
Best Cry: The Smell of Other People's Houses
The ending was so much satisfying that the screen was blurry! (so it's a best cry, not a sad cry).
Best Scare: The Thing Beneath the Bed
I don't read scary books, but I read 2 horror picture books, it was interesting.
Best Love: Cruel Beauty
A retelling of the Beauty and the Beast.
Best Shock: Unwind
Several times.
Best Author: Patrick Ness because The Ask and the Answer made me so damn mad.
Best Series: The Lunar Chronicles. I read Scarlet this quarter and I'm very curious about what's next.
Best Read: It's probably The Smell of Other People's Houses. I bought the ebook and then the paperback and I'd like to re-read it "soon" (in another universe where I don't have 4000 books to read). I could nominate it for most of the categories.

I knew it would probably engage my mind, but I was surprised by how much it engaged my heart too.
Biggest Let Down: A tie between The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks and The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths. I'd heard such good things about these books I was surprised by how little they impacted me. They were well written, just not a shot out of the park as I expected.
Best Dressed:

Best Characters:

The two lead characters, paleontologists from two different planets (and solar systems), stayed with me long after I finished.
Best Laugh:

I had to laugh at all the bad things that happen to the male lead in this book.
Best Cry: I found myself reaching for the Kleenex several times this quarter.

Best Scare: Hard to say, but I'm going with

Best Love:

Best Shock:

In this book, the shock was something that I was expecting that didn't happen. I was waiting 'til the end of the book and it never happened.
Best Series:

I love this series!!! It's one of the few books I get immediately upon publication and always in audiobook format!
Best Read:

Oh. My. God. This book is so good. I don't care if you like or don't like sci-fi, I think you'll like this one. It engages both your mind and heart.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Breakout Read:
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Just hilarious and engaging.
Biggest Let Down:
The Stand by Stephen King. Just ... terrible. Bland characters who blended into one another, and a dull, meandering storyline. I had been wanting to read this for years, and it was an enormous disappointment.
Best Dressed:

What's not to love about a taxidermied (?) mouse in a cloak??
Best Characters:
Probably The Importance of Being Earnest again. Such feckless idiots, but very loveable.
Best Laugh:
Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir - Jenny Lawson is hilarious.
Best Cry:
The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. The longing and desperation you could feel from both the girls & the boys was palpable.
Best Scare:
Although I hated it, The Stand had me paranoid every time someone around me sneezed.
Best Love:
None.
Best Shock:
Still Foolin' 'Em: Where I've Been, Where I'm Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys by Billy Crystal. I thought I liked him, but I was gobsmacked at what an entitled, egocentric whiney guy he turned out to be.
Best Author:
Oscar Wilde. I loved Earnest, and I can't wait to read more.
Best Series:
None ... even though I read the 8th Harry Potter book/play. It was terrible, and I'd like to forget its existence.
Best Read:
The Virgin Suicides. I just love his writing, and the way he gets under your skin.

Biggest Let Down: The Name of the Rose This was on my radar since it's publication. I just didn't enjoy it.
Best Dressed: Beautiful Ruins

Best Characters:

Best Laugh: Somehow I read 3 hilarious books during this time period. The funniest was:

Best Cry: Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir Some things that happened in Jenny's life are so sad, but she tells her story in a very funny way.
Best Scare: Breath, Eyes, Memory Some aspects of life in Haiti are horrifying.
Best Love: Jane Eyre - Jane and Mr. Rochester.
Best Shock: The Muse Quite a twist I didn't see coming.
Best Author: Liane Moriarity I read The Husband's Secret this quarter and Big Little Lies earlier and loved them both.
Best Series: I read The Cruelest Month, the 3rd book in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny. The books keep getting better.
Best Read: Hard to pick, but I choose The Muse by Jessie Burton. Wonderful historical fiction.

Breakout Read:
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Just hilarious and engaging.
Biggest Let ..."
Jody, I loved Jenny Lawson's book too. So funny. Have you read

It's funny, but serious at the same time. Lawson talks about her mental illness, but in her usual hilarious way. I hope you enjoy it.

Breakout Read: The Wee Free Men (Discworld #30) by Terry Pratchett
Biggest Let Down: Confess by Colleen Hoover
Best Dressed: A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab

Best Characters: The Wee Free Men (Discworld #30) by Terry Pratchett
Best Laugh: The Wee Free Men (Discworld #30) by Terry Pratchett
Best Cry: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
Best Scare: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Best Love: none were memorable
Best Shock: -
Best Author: Terry Pratchett
Best Series: A tie between Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman and Discworld by Terry Pratchett
Best Read: The Wee Free Men (Discworld #30) by Terry Pratchett

This one snuck in there right at the end of the quarter, but I have to give it to Enter Title Here. This was by far one of the most unique and engaging YA books I ever read, and it really blew me away.
Biggest Let Down
There were quite a few contenders for this one. Since I started this year and last year's Book Riot challenges in July, I strategically tried to knock out some of the categories that I was least looking forward to early on, some of which were better than others.
I would have to say of all of them, the biggest let down had to be The Deep End of the Ocean, with The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend in a very close second. I was really looking forward to The Deep End of the Ocean, but I really didn't enjoy it much at all. I loved the movie version of The DUFF, but was very, very disappointed by the book.
Best Dressed

Best Characters
Enter Title Here definitely had the most compelling characters. Even when they weren't so likable, they all felt like real people and even the side characters were pretty interesting.
Best Laugh
The Graveyard Book had some really funny parts, especially listening to Neil Gaiman narrating them himself! I also have to give an honourable mention to When Elephant met Giraffe, which I read earlier this year and counted for my Book Riot challenge that I started in July.
Best Cry
Definitely the ending of Of Mice and Men
Best Scare
This isn't a scare in a traditional sense, but I'm going with the description of footbinding in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
Best Love: A book with a romance worth swooning for (does not have to be a romance book)
It's hard for me to remember how exactly some of the relationships in the books I read developed, but I remember that I really liked the relationship between Jase and Samantha in My Life Next Door, and I also really enjoyed the relationship development in Before We Were Strangers.
Best Shock
I was very, very surprised by how much I enjoyed Devoted. I read it for "a book about religion" for one of my BookRiot challenges, which was a category that I was really dreading. I was very pleasantly surprised by how strong this book was, and how well they handled the topic of questioning the religion you are brought up with. So in that sense, it was a shock for me because it was an unexpected favourite of the quarter.
Best Author
Rahul Kanakia, with an honourable mention to Tahereh Mafi.
Best Series
This is a tough choice, since I read quite a few books from series and I enjoyed most of them. I will give the award to Shatter Me because I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, with Noughts & Crosses in a close second. (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was also a strong contender, but I was pretty sure I would enjoy it).
Best Read
Enter Title Here

Biggest Let Down: Auntie Mame: An Irreverent Escapade. I think it's the first time I can say that I liked the movie better than the book!
Best Dressed: First Frost
Best Characters: Kafka on the Shore. The old man and the young truck driver.
Best Laugh: Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
Best Cry: Joy: Poet, Seeker, and the Woman Who Captivated C. S. Lewis
Best Scare: Kafka on the Shore
Best Love: Queen Sugar
Best Shock: Code Name Verity. Not only did this one make my jaw drop, it surprised me so badly I almost stopped in the passing lane of a major highway!
Best Author: Haruki Murakami
Best Series: First Frost
Best Read: This is a tough one! I have at least three. But considering how many other "bests" it reeived here, I have to say Kafka on the Shore. This was my first Murakami, and it blew me away.

Biggest Let Down: Moby-Dick; or, The Whale
Best Dressed:

Best Characters: I'm twisting this category a bit choosing Doctor Who: 12 Doctors, 12 Stories, because I love how each author managed to capture each Doctor's specificities.
Best Laugh: I didn't read funny books, but The Silver Linings Playbook made me smile quite a few time.
Best Cry: The Girl with All the Gifts, I found the ending quite powerful.
Best Scare: The Girl with All the Gifts again, it made my palms all sweaty.
Best Love: Again, not a lot of love in my books, I almost wanted to say the love between Melanie and Mrs Justineau in The Girl with All the Gifts, but I'll choose the comic book Saga.
Best Shock: Ubar in Sandstorm, those who read the book will understand.
Best Author: I'm tempted to say Neil Gaiman, but it would be the third time in a row, so let's say Kate Morton (I read The Forgotten Garden).
Best Series: I loved Lock In and can't wait to see how the series is going to develop in Head On next year.
Best Read: Though choice, but I'm going to go with The Girl with All the Gifts.

Breakout Read: Oh, The Places You’ll Go!. I'd heard nothing but great things and I was expecting to like it but it still blew me away!
Biggest Let Down: Thirteen Reasons Why. I expected so much more and I ended up hating it.
Best Dressed: On the Other Side. Such a pretty cover!
Best Characters: The Walking Dead, Compendium 1. I don't know how much of my opinion on this is based on the show (which I'm obsessed with) but I do still think that this series has such an amazing range of diverse and interesting characters.
Best Laugh: Bonkers: My Life in Laughs. Ok, I haven't actually finished this one yet but it is so funny and has already made me laugh a lot.
Best Cry: Love You Forever. Ok, I didn't actually cry but none of my books from my third quarter made me cry and this one was the closest. I certainly understood why they all ended up crying in Friends after Joey's dramatic reading of it.
Best Scare: I technically finished Let's Go Play At The Adams' in this quarter BUT I mentioned it and used it for this category in the second quarter (as I was still reading it at the time) so I'll give it to another book this time. The Walking Dead, Compendium 1 had several scary moments and even though I had seen the show, I still wasn't prepared or ready for any of them. Helped by how different the show and the comics are. Especially how much worse and more evil the Governor is in the comics! I thought he was creepy and bad enough in the show!
Best Love: Love You Forever. Although I read two romance books this quarter, neither of the romantic relationships in them really did much for me. The love between mother and child in this book however was just heart-warming and beautiful.
Best Shock: Although The Walking Dead, Compendium 1 could fit here easily, I actually have to give this one to Apeshit because that book was crazy and just full of completely out of the blue insane things that surprised and shocked me throughout.
Best Author: I mean, as if I could pick anyone besides Dr. Seuss.
Best Series: The Walking Dead, Compendium 1. Without a doubt.
Best Read: Oh, The Places You’ll Go!. Just incredible!

Biggest Let Down: Wuthering Heights. I thought that I would like this one more than I did.
Best Dressed:

Best Characters: Once again we are going with Murder on the Orient Express. Hercul Poirot is such a great character! Runner up would be The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line. Veronica Mars is a kick ass chick!
Best Laugh: This one is a tie between Secondhand Souls andMy Lady Jane. I laughed a lot during both books
Best Cry: Go Set a Watchman I didn’t cry but it did make me feel sad for parts of it.
Best Scare: Didn’t read any books this time that did that.
Best Love:
Best Shock: Murder on the Orient Express. I wasn’t expecting that ending at all.
Best Author:Agatha Christie and Gail Bowen
Best Series: I love Gail Bowen’s Joanne Kilbourn series but sadly I finished the most current book the other day.
Best Read: Murder on the Orient Express is my top for this quarter!

Biggest Let Down: Dark Places
Best Dressed: When the Music's Over
Best Characters: Don't You Cry
Best Cry: Also, Don't You Cry I cried.
Best Scare: The Woman in Cabin 10 I do not scare easily, but if I had to choose one, this one kept me on edge.
Best Love: The Innocent: A Vanessa Michael Munroe Novel
Best Shock: Snow White Must Die
Best Author: Again I have to say: Don't You Cry
Best Series: Want to read more of this series: The Innocent: A Vanessa Michael Munroe Novel
Best Read: Has to be: Don't You Cry
I do not read too much funny stuff and I am sure some of the books I read had funny spots, but none "stand out" so it is the only one I did not do.
