Lincoln Rhyme #1
Description: Lincoln Rhyme was once a brilliant criminologist, a genius in the field of forensics -- until an accident left him physically and emotionally shattered. But now a diabolical killer is challenging Rhyme to a terrifying and ingenious duel of wits. With police detective Amelia Sachs by his side, Rhyme must follow a labyrinth of clues that reaches back to a dark chapter in New York City's past -- and reach further into the darkness of the mind of a madman who won't stop until he has stripped life down to the bone.

We've read The Bone Collector previously, M.L. It was a while ago, but may I suggest you nominate the 2nd book?

I'll nominate Last Bus to Woodstock by Colin Dexter
Inspector Morse #1
Norman Colin Dexter, OBE (born 29 September 1930 in Stamford, Lincolnshire) is an English crime writer, known for his Inspector Morse novels.
Beautiful Sylvia Kaye and another young woman had been seen hitching a ride not long before Sylvia's bludgeoned body is found outside a pub in Woodstock, near Oxford. Morse is sure the other hitchhiker can tell him much of what he needs to know. But his confidence is shaken by the cool inscrutability of the girl he's certain was Sylvia's companion on that ill-fated September evening. Shrewd as Morse is, he's also distracted by the complex scenarios that the murder set in motion among Sylvia's girlfriends and their Oxford playmates. To grasp the painful truth, and act upon it, requires from Morse the last atom of his professional discipline.

Excellent book, M.L.

Made into motion picture the story of a woman bringing up her 5 yr old son in a room she's being held captive

Me too! It's in my Amazon basket! I also just saw this and since I'm reading Miss Marple--and love Poirot--well, just have to!
"From the Inside Flap
"[Morse is] the most prickly, conceited, and genuinely brilliant detective since Hercule Poirot."
--The New York Times Book Review
Not politicking either - it's enthusiasm! :)

The best romantic thriller/suspense ever"
We read this last October, Jyotsna. It is a great book, but could you pick one we haven't read?
For everyone, this is the link to our Group read bookshelf for you to check to make sure your nomination hasn't been read before.

I wrote this again because my first nomination seems to have chopped off her last name. This is why I nominated it twice

Jyotsna, you could nominate Jamaica Inn as an alternative, or perhaps her short story collection Don't Look Now and Other Stories.

I nominate The Cleaner (John Milton #1) by Mark Dawson -sorry couldn't get the link to work :(
Meet John Milton
He considers himself an artisan. A craftsman. His trade is murder.
Milton is the man the government sends after you when everything else has failed. Ruthless. Brilliant. Anonymous. Lethal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd but you wouldn't want to be on his list. But now, after ten years, he's had enough - there's blood on his hands and he wants out. Trouble is, this job is not one you can just walk away from.
He goes on the run, seeking atonement for his sins by helping the people he meets along the way. But his past cannot be easily forgotten and before long it is Milton who is hunted, and not the hunter.
The Cleaner
A career of state-sanctioned murder has taken its toll. Milton is troubled by nightmares, a long line of ghosts who torment his dreams. He resolves to make his next job his last and, then, perhaps, he can start to make amends for everything that he has done.
Sharon Warriner is a single mother in the East End of London, suicidal with fear that she's lost her young son to a life in the gangs. After Milton saves her life, he promises to help. But the gang, and the charismatic rapper who leads it, is not about to cooperate with him.
As London burns through summer riots, Milton finds himself in unfamiliar territory, dealing with an unfamiliar foe. And when his employer sends another agent after him, the odds against him are stacked even higher.

Yes there have been a couple of great films based on this book, one with Jack Nicolson and another German one which in my opinion is better starring Heinz Ruehmann. The second enters into the psychology more, but even then as with most films, does not cover the full story.

Great minds work alike. I was just checking to see the status.

When the poll is up, Bill will send all members a message letting you know it's ready. You can click on the "polls" link in the top right corner and the poll should be the first one you see. Then you choose the book you want to read, and hopefully it will win.

This time around I'm giving you a chance to nominate a mystery/crime/thriller novel that was written by an author whose last name begins in either 'D' or 'E'. (I'm combining both as I don't know that there are sufficient E authors to make a good thread next time .) I think this should give lots of options for nominations
Authors we've read as a group before are okay to nominate, but please make sure we haven't read the particular book.
NOW -- for the boilerplate:
1. If your nomination wins the poll vote, you will become the de facto discussion leader. Do NOT nominate a book if you do not wish to do this. (This has happened a few times)
2. When a book gets to the poll, please please please -- if you don't really want to read it, don't vote for it.
3. This is not the place for authors to promote their own work.
4. If the book is in a series, it might be wise to start with book #1 rather than somewhere mid-series.
Other than that, it will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with!
(I'll probably keep the nominations open until around the 9th, unless we get a lot to start off with.)
Good luck. Looking forward to your nominations.
