Just to follow on from Kathryn's comment, I went to The Dressmaker exhibition at Ripponlea last week. It was absolutely fantastic! Such sumptuous gowns, and interesting background info on their creation. Even if you haven't read the book or seen the film, this exhibition is worth seeing IMHO.

message 111: by Stef (last edited Jul 10, 2016 04:07PM) (new)

Stef Rozitis I LIKE this challenge. Let's hope I can source all the books I need to do it!

I changed my "female author" to one that was on my Good reads TBR AND in real life on my shelf AND I really wanted to read it. Sadly it is not Australian so I will need to make sure to source one that is as well!

1) The book that's been on your list the longest Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison
2) A book recommended by a GR friend
3) A book from your favourite genre Rethinking School Choice: Limits of the Market Metaphor (genre: non-fiction, contemporary issues in education)
4) A book with over 400 pages The Witches of Eileanan (Australian)
5) A book by an author new to you I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban
6) The book you want to read the most Elite Schools in Globalising Circumstances: New Conceptual Directions and Connections (Australian and possibly even relevant for thesis)
7) A book by a male author Unlucky 13
8) A book by one of your favourite authors Castle in the Air
9) A book by a female author The Well of Loneliness
10) A book with a cover you love [I am not a visual person and honestly do NOT love books based on covers so I don't know. Maybe I will work something out]
11) A book set in Australia by an Aussie author Friday Barnes: Girl Detective
12) A book set in another country Daughter of Tintagel

Now obviously the likelihood of me reading all twelve is pretty low. I will hope to read 3-6 of these, depending on how easily I can track them down in libraries etc. The Kenway one that I really, really, really, REALLY want to read may be one of the hardest...
The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall Friday Barnes Girl Detective by R.A. Spratt

I totally second recommending Ice Station -to anyone else who has it on their TBR list too, it's great fun! :D

And.. would somebody perhaps choose me something from my list for that particular challenge?

Also is there a list of books anywhere for the books set in Australia by an Aussie author challenge, because I'm not even sure if I have any of those on my TBR list?
Thanks

message 120: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79967 comments Mod
Karen if you scroll up to the top of this page (or any of the group's pages) you'll see on the right hand side - Bookshelf - click on that and there are pages and pages of Aussie author titles; some set in AU, some not.

And you'd like a recommendation? OK ... I'll check your list ..

2. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
3. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

Sally906 | 86 comments Less than 12 hours and we can start our July books!!

I am going to start with my one for #12 - A book set in another country: A Scone To Die For (Oxford Tearoom Mysteries, Book 1) by H.Y. Hanna A Scone To Die For by H.Y. Hanna - is set in England, and an American tourist is murdered and the author lives in Perth - I reckon that could actually fit a few of the tasks - but can only assign it to one :)

Sarah | 83 comments My TBR list isn't too bad but I'm hoping this will get me to actually finish something. I have so many books that are half-started on my book shelf with book marks in them (not for this challenge but in general). Talk about indecisive! ;)

So here are mine and I'm aiming for the minimum of 3 at least.

1) The book that's been on your list the longest: Art and Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking
2) A book recommended by a GR friend:
3) A book from your favourite genre: Beyond the Hanging Wall (Aussie)
4) A book with over 400 pages: The Final Empire
5) A book by an author new to you: Perigord
6) The book you want to read the most: The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living: A Guide to ACT
7) A book by a male author: Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered
8) A book by one of your favourite authors: Twixt Firelight and Water
9) A book by a female author: You're Never Weird on the Internet
10) A book with a cover you love: A Thousand Splendid Suns
11) A book set in Australia by an Aussie author: Jasper Jones (Aussie)
12) A book set in another country: Norwegian Wood

Kathryn | 3569 comments I started Useful this morning, but throughout the day I developed a head cold (which had been threatening for a week) and I decided that a story about a man feeling useless and wanting to kill himself was not ideal reading when I already feel rather miserable myself!

So I've switched to Mary Bennet by Jennifer Paynter and am enjoying it. I realised when I started it that Jennifer Paynter is an Aussie author which I hadn't known before.

Fair enough, mood is important and it can make or break how we feel about a novel. Thank goodness for the lighter literature! :-)

Roxanne (roxyrolla) | 23 comments Is it too late to join this challenge? I sure hope not! Here are my choices, although I'm sure I won't finish all of them - at least I have them all ready to go on my bedside table!

5/12 completed

1) The book that's been on your list the longest The Kitchen Daughter by Jael McHenry
2) A book recommended by a GR friend
3) A book from your favourite genre Dumplin' (Dumplin', #1) by Julie Murphy 4* to this fun book!
4) A book with over 400 pages Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson: 4*, really cute, review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
5) A book by an author new to you Breaking Sky by Cori McCarthy 3*, review to come
6) The book you want to read the most All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
7) A book by a male author The Rosie Project - this was soooo good! 5* review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
8) A book by one of your favourite authors
9) A book by a female author The Girls by Emma Cline
10) A book with a cover you love The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles, #1) by Mary E. Pearson
11) A book set in Australia by an Aussie author Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty - 5*, so good, here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
12) A book set in another country A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

I think only two of these authors are Australian, so I guess I'll read those first as top priority.
