Just heard. Now I know how folks who loved the movies in the 40s felt in the 80s as all their idols died off.

AA Gill the restaurant reviewer...Really sad about Greg Lake, though. It's not that long since Keith Emerson went.

RiP Rick - I'm sure he will be sorely missed by, not only his close friends and family - but by anyone who appreciates good rock!
Status Quo introduced me to the world of rock. I saw them in Blackpool in the 70's and they were simply awesome. Rick and Lemmy are going to have a hell of a party up there!
Now George Michael, at 53 that's much too young! This is just unreal. The year is ending with a Wham!
Yeah, the guy was younger than me. That starts to get worrying. On the positive side, at least Carrie Fisher is stable :)
I couldn't name one of his songs but still, it's sad. I think with celebrity 'early deaths' we forget the hard-living, often addicive lifestyles they led.
I confess I loathe 'Last Christmas' and 'Club Tropicana' comes close to being one of my most hated songs of all time. But I did like Wham Rap and I really enjoyed a lot of his solo stuff and despite all the public trouble he got into he came across as a decent bloke. He had to stop recording for something like 5 years, until his recording contract expired because his record company wouldn't let him pursue the music he wanted to. I have always admired him immensely for that.Kath, I think you have a point, it sounds as if he did a fair few hectic substances.
Wow, that's a shock - funnily enough we saw 5 mins of a Christmas song show yesterday and commented on how young he was when that song was done.
At midnight on 31st December I think the phrase happy new year should be replaced with "thank God it's a new year"
It won't get any better, there are scores of septuagenarian pop stars and actors queuing up to die next year. It's just the way it is.

That was probably in his hey-day. Apparently he turned to giving it away in later years.,http://www.independent.ie/entertainme...
His death is probably more likely linked to the bout of pneumonia he had that resulted in him having to have a tracheostomy in 2011 and the car crash he had.
I know writers are supposed to write blogs to sell their books but I don't think this one will win me many friends. :-(Can I mourn other peoples' idols?

Well - another one has joined the sad 2016 list........... not a celebrity - except with her own circle of family and friends. She had been battling breast cancer for years and was so determined to beat it for as long as she could. She was the same age as my daughter (45) and lost her battle earlier this evening. RiP Samantha Jayne Clewer-Midgely.

Thanks everyone - she put up such a good battle and kept her positivity going right to the end. She was determined that she would see Christmas and even made it, albeit in a wheelchair, to a carol service in the hospice yesterday. This is the message her family wrote on FB to let people know.........Tonight at 17:30 Samantha passed away, surrounded by loved ones. As everyone in her life knew, she was a fighter. And god damn she fought it hard! And with 2016 being pretty shit for the loss of great people, naturally she wanted to be part of that club... I'm sure everyone reading this can agree she earned her place. (And we know there are a lot of people who loved her very, very much reading this) In this undeniably hard time it would be her wish that each person remembers her in their own way. Everyone will have one stand-out memory that springs to mind when you think back on your time with her. Whatever that may be, that is how she'd like to be remembered. In true Samantha tradition take this time to sit back, have a drink and enjoy time with loved ones. She'd want us all to go forth into the new year, striving to achieve our goals and making the most of every moment
