Re: Liz Smith - one of my favourite quotes of hers - comes from a bit of advice she was giving in an episode of the Vicar of Dibley.........
"Play the field; snog everybody; sleep with most. I didn't, and I've been regretting it ever since. I do like young Frank, but a bit of a slow mover. Twenty-six years and not even upstairs outsidees.
Way to go Liz - aka Letitia ;-)
It's true. Young people, but again, addiction played a part. It damages your body irrevocably. She hasn't looked well recently.
Just saw the clip of her on Graham Norton, I can't believe she was only 60 after seeing her on that, she looked much older. I don't know much about her lifestyle, but if that what addiction does to you that should be a warning to others.Still sorry to have heard of her passing though. Also sorry to hear about your loss Flo.
Gosh, how many more are there going to be this year!

She was smart and funny, a keen observer and a gifted writer ( I really enjoyed Postcards from the Edge) - I'd hoped that if anyone could spit in the eye of the Reaper it might be her, but no...
Jeez...2016 has been a godawful year ;-(
Yep. I have been trying to come up with something for Patti's 2016 has been a good year thread, and I am coming up blank.

A lovely friend of my younger daughter - they've been the best of friends since they were 11 - got married in the summer. It was a wonderfully happy shindig.
Oh, and team GB did well in the Olympics and Paralympics.
Yup...Think that's it.
Lots more sad news.It was on TV yesterday that George Michael actually did a lot of charitable work that he kept private - he helped Childline enormously for example, donating all the royalties from one of his number one records to them, and they were actually planning a concert to thank him for his continuing generosity.

I'm sad.
Just found this, can't believe there was over 250 lost, surely 2017 can't be that badhttp://deadline.com/gallery/hollywood...
But how many had you heard of ? :-)Just for comparison, here's 2015 http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-n... but again a lot will never have been known outside the US or those who follow film a lot
Out of the first 50 or so (I got too annoyed by the walking legs interruption to look any further), about 1 in 10.I hadn't realised that Sylvia Anderson had died this year - I loved her Lady Penelope when I was growing up.
Out of Jim's list: 6.
Mourning the passing of a young man in 1910! When I was working in the Archives yesterday - I came across the newspaper article about a young man, who had travelled to Cardiff from Cheltenham in search of work. On not finding any - he despaired and committed suicide. The letter - from Kitty (maybe Wife or Sweetheart) was found in his pocket when the body was washed up from the canal. Just reading this article made me feel really sad. I have transcribed from the newspaper cutting to make it easier reading! Saturday 15th January 1910 – Western Mail
DESPAIR OF THE WORKLESS
PATHETIC LETTER ON CORPSE AT CARDIFF
My Dear Will,
Just received your letter, which relieved my mind a bit. Now, my dear, you must really pull yourself up together. Don’t lose heart, but try your best to get something to do. Try on the trams as conductor if you cannot hear of anything else. I never slept all last night thinking about you and wondering if you are allright. If you find you cannot get anything to do, and we don’t hear anything, you must come back home; but in any case you must cheer up, because you are not one by yourself, although you are there and we are here. Above all, dear, look to God and ask His help and guidance. I have prayed to Him to take care of you and bring us safe together again.
This letter, headed “Thursday” and signed “Your own Kitty,” was found on the body of a well-dressed man picked out of the Mount Stuart Dry Dock, Cardiff, on Friday, it having evidently been washed up by the tide.
It is believed that the man’s name was William J. Bircher, of 29 Granville Street, Cheltenham, for that is where the letter was addressed from.
Apparently, it is a tragedy following a futile search for work in South Wales. The man was seen in Cardiff three weeks ago, having stayed at No. 7 Bridge Street, occupied by William Jolliffe.
Judging from its appearance, the body had been in the water about a fortnight. In one of deceased’s pockets was a pawn ticket, for a watch and chain, which was pledged in Cardiff on December 17.
It is a terrible thing not to be able to find work which can support you and your family. Most people would rather work.
Sad to hear that the lovely children's illustrator/author Babette Cole has died - only 66 I think too. Shame to see such talent go too soon.
Gene Cernan, the last astronaut to walk on the moon, has died - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-ca...
Sad news: "NCIS: Los Angeles" actor Miguel Ferrer died of cancer earlier today. The son of Rosemary Clooney and Jose Ferrer and first cousin to George Clooney was 61. RIP Granger
I haven't watched any of the NCIS franchise recently - I loved it a couple of years ago, but it just lost its appeal from overkill.
Funnily enough I watched an NCIS LA episode with him in yesterday. Didn't realise who he was related to.
Just heard that Gorden Kaye, of 'Allo 'Allo fame, has died aged 75 at a care home. I used to love that programme.
Someone that I met through crafting died at the weekend. She designed some gorgeous rubber stamps. I was lucky enough to go to a couple of workshops that she ran, she was a lovely person and will be missed by many crafters. RIP. Jayne Nestorenko.
RiP Gordon Kaye - it seems his borrowed time has run out. He almost died in 1990 in a car accident and it was a miracle that he recovered from that. Sad.Sad about your crafting friend Janet :(
Sad to hear of the passing of Sir John Hurt....... a great actor who had such a vast variety of roles that he certainly wasn't typecast! RiP
Ah yes, I Clavdivs. Some definitive John Hurt performances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMUqW...
