Elizabeth White | 1761 comments A word here for Asad Shah, the Glaswegian shopkeeper who was stabbed to death apparently for wishing Christians a happy Easter.

What a dreadful shame that a message of good will should act as an incitement to murder.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments On a lighter note, today is the last ever edition of the Independent newspaper. The front cover has a blank page with the words "Stop press" on it. Quite possibly it's first and last joke in its final edition.

If they had made jokes like that when it was running, I might have bought it more often.

message 103: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21817 comments I remembered we tried it when it first came out, and gave up on it because it was so dour and seemed too independent to give in to the urge to write something fun :-(

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I'm more upset at the death of Asad Shah, than I am over the death of a mediocre rag.

After "Stop Press" it should read "Yes Please."

I find myself in agreement here, his death undermines all of us

message 106: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Yeh, agreed re Asad Shah, that's grim.

Not too upset re the independent. I wrote them a letter once, they printed it, but they removed a few choice words and used my letter to argue the exact opposite point to the one I was making. I'm sure it really amused them but I never bought it again.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Apparently Patty Duke has just died, aged 69. She was the mother of Sean Astin - Sam in LOTR, and well known in her own right.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments She was also known as Patty Duke Astin for a while as she was married to John Astin, who played Gomez Addams.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Ronnie Corbett has died, aged 85. It flashed up on the BBC as I was reading another article.

Sad day

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Just seen that. Very sad indeed, although 85 could be worse.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8591 comments Yes it is sad, used to see him in the High Street quite often with Mrs C, they lived just along the road by Muirfield GC. Very dapper and very pleasant.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments And its goodbye from him....

message 113: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3341 comments Yes sad to see the other partner in the much loved duo bow out.

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments It's sad, but the world would have been a poorer place without them both. Such a unique character and voice. Rest in peace Ronnie Corbett, in whatever giant armchair takes your fancy!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I just watched this clip, I hadn't seen before. Ronnie C interviewing Julie Andrews, played by Michael Palin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWn-D...

Wonderful absurdity. Watch Ronnie trying desperately not to corpse.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Excellent! I do like Michael Palin very much, and they were a great combination here.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments That's a real pisser.

message 120: by Jim (new)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Nice, Jim.

message 122: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21817 comments a friend of mine had it on facebook so it seemed to appropriate not to share

message 123: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments I like that Jim.
Sad loss !

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Loving the pictures. ;-)

message 125: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments RIP Ronnie Corbett.
Loved the four (k) candles picture Jim.

message 126: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21817 comments Friend of mine shared it on facebook and it seemed just so appropriate.
I also feel he'd have loved the fact that the Daily Telegraph had a two page tribute to him, and it was April 1st :-)

message 127: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I'm sure he would :@)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Agony Aunt Denise Robertson died yesterday at the age of 83.

message 129: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments I've just seen it GL, I didn't realise she was as old as that. I used to watch This Morning before they moved back round the corner and she was a lovely lady and very well thought of.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I'm sure she helped many people over the years.

message 131: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments She must have helped thousands !

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I was listening to a discussion about her and I think it was Richard Madeley, said that she would do the on-air stuff then spend hours afterwards answering the phones in the back room.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments "It's a wrap!" The voice behind Admiral Ackbar has become a force ghost...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Apparently David Gest died yesterday, 'under unexplained circumstances'. Which means he was alone in a hotel room, and there was no obvious cause of death.

message 135: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The world's full of people I've never heard of till they die.

I was thinking that last week.

Jim | 21817 comments Kath wrote: "The world's full of people I've never heard of till they die."

Absolutely, and I'm struggling to miss them.....

message 138: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've only heard of him because of the Big Brother thing where one of the contestants thought it was him who died when David Bowie's wife said "David's dead"

message 139: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Until yesterday my only knowledge of David Gest was as the former Mr Liza Minelli. But according to the news he produced a Michael Jackson show, a Cliff Richard album and all sorts of other stuff.

message 140: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yeah, I was just reading the BBC article and he seems to have been quite successful in his own right. I suppose producers aren't usually well known it's the people they are producing for that get all the glory.

message 141: by David (new)

David Hadley I sort of half-recognised the name but CBATG.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I also see some people who have died and think "I thought they were already dead."

message 143: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I don't know half the people you lot talk about, alive or dead.

message 144: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21817 comments don't worry Patti, I doubt I know two thirds and I live in the same country

message 145: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Comes from not being interested in 'celebrities', I suspect.

message 146: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Am I the only one who can't work out what CBATG stands for?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8591 comments Can't Be Arsed To Google!

Jim | 21817 comments Rosemary the fourth plinth wrote: "Can't Be Arsed To Google!"

Ironically I had to google it ;-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I knew someone would say that!

message 150: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments I'm shite at celebs too but I had heard of David Guest (shockingly unconvincingly dyed black hair) and Ronnie Corbett. ;-)
