First Quarter - New Zealand

✔1. Larnach Castle: Built in 1871 by William Larnach, it is credited as the only historic castle of New Zealand.

✔2. Otago Gold Fields: One of the oldest gold field mining centers in New Zealand, it was discovered approximately 140 years ago.

✔3. Te Waimate Mission House: Te Waimate Mission House is the only survivor of three mission houses founding in 1830 by Reverend Samuel Marsden on behalf of the Church Missionary Society. It was built in 1832.
☃ Read a book in which a church or religion plays a part, or a book between #18 and #32 on your TBR.

✔4. Alberton: Originally a farmhouse built around 1863, it was later expanded to 18 rooms. During late 19th century, it was famous for its balls, hunts, garden parties and musicals.

✔5. Thames School of Mines: Many schools for goldminers were built in the 1880's, and Thames School of Mines was the largest. The school later expanded to include curriculum for electricity, engineering, agriculture and pharmacy.

✔6. Hurworth: Hurworth was a settlement established in 1850's. Originally there were six houses in the settlement, but 4 were destroyed in the New Zealand Wars, and 1 was lost to fire. Built in 1855 by pioneer settler Sir Harry Atkinson, this is the only remaining builing of the Taranaki settlement that flourished during the 1850's.

✔7. Old St. Paul's: In the heart of Wellington's heritage precinct, you will find this beautiful wooden cathedral.

✔8. Fyffe House: Located in the town of Kaikoura, Fyffe house is its oldest surviving building, and all that remains of Robert Fyffe's whaling station that was established in 1842.

✔9. Totara Estate: Once a grand estate of 15,000 acres, the Totara Estate is where New Zealand's first shipment of frozen mutton was prepared and sent out to the other side of the world on the SS Dunedin in 1882. This was the beginning of New Zealand's multi-billion dollar frozen meat industry.

✔10. Brunner Mine Industrial Site: What was once one of New Zealand's most productive coal mines, with the north and south parts linked by an 1876 suspension bridge, today the site shows only the remains of coal mining and coke making structures from the late 1800's.
