Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Killer Next Door by Alex Marwood for the SAI King Recommends group read. Awesomely creepy!

My next audiobook happens to be by the same author, The Wicked Girls. It wasn't my intention to read her books back to back, but it was a bit coincidental how that worked out. Wicked Girls was up next on my queue when SAI King group decided to read one of her other books.

Kristie | 19223 comments I just finished Uprooted. I didn't love it as much as others seem to. It just seemed too long and as it got closer to the end, I just wanted it to be over with. Honestly, I think it may be me and not the book...

Starting Fahrenheit 451 next.

Great book, so far. Just still been too stressed to finish it. All I seem able to do is knit! Reading takes more focus than I can summon at this time.

The group Janice referred to is mine and Almeta's and is call Books Stephen King Recommends. Just to clarify. Thanks for the plug, Janice!

Marie (eiram) | 26 comments I just finished On Chesil Beach . Liked it but gave just three stars because of the ending. I am now in the mood for a good mystery again...something is telling me, that this is the right time to read Agatha Christie again:)

I don't think it's you Kristie, I have seen quite a lot of reviews for Uprooted where people said they were not impressed. I am going to read it next month and I'm looking forward to seeing how I feel about it.

It has a lot of action and I can definitely see why people would love it. I just never really grabbed me. I think even though there was a lot going on, it just felt flat to me somehow. I look forward to seeing what you think of it.

I'm sorry you're feeling so stressed, Debra! I hope it passes soon. Sending you lots of hugs. When I'm stressed, I find myself reading easy fluff (just look back at some of my 2015 reads). The Killer Next Door isn't what I'd call easy or fluff.

In my mind, I call your group SAI King Recommends... we've had some great group reads/discussions. I added all the books I've read there on a new shelf called.... Yup, you guessed it sai king recommends. LOL!

It's narrated by Imogen Church who is a new-to-me narrator and I quite enjoyed her save for some of her male voices, but I got used to them as well.

I find that many narrators struggle with voices for the opposite sex. At least, you were able to get used to hers. I've heard a couple that are just awful and I couldn't get past it. Fortunately, that's rare for me.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I started The Sherlockian last night for the group themed read.

message 265: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished Jurassic Park for the buddy read and geocache challenge. Now I'm starting Speak which I got through NetGalley so I need to review it.

message 266: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I finished both Oryx and Crake and The Sherlockian yesterday for the monthly read, and now I'm focusing on finishing The Girl in the Spider's Web, and will finally begin the geocache challenge with Divinity and The Python. Oh! I'm also starting the audio for The Subtle Knife.

message 267: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finished the last couple of books in The Frost Chronicles over the weekend. It was a decent series. Lia, the main character, is a strong young girl struggling to take care of her family against all odds. My only problem is that she is so stubborn and closed minded a lot of the time. I felt bad for her little sister some of the time, even though Lia was just trying to protect her. For me, the first book in the series, Frost, was the strongest of the series, but overall it was enjoyable if you are a fan of YA books.

I'm also working on book two (Sea of Stars) of another YA series that seriously outshines The Frost Chronicles. New adult would probably be a better classification of this series that Young Adult. Book two gets significantly more mature in content. Regardless, I am LOVING this series so far.

Is your audio with multiple narrators? At least in the first book I thougjt production basically sucked. It was choppy and didn't seem natural. Is your experience better?

message 270: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I think you're asking about The Subtle Knife? If so, yes, it's with multiple narrators, more of a dramatic reading, which I like, actually. The quality of the audio is very tinny, especially in Lyra's case, and Will's too. I didn't listen to the Golden Compass, because when I first looked for it, the library only had the ebook, of course, when I went back to get Knife, the audio of the Golden Compass was suddenly available. Grr.

message 271: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I was Lynda. The tinniness of Golden Compass has kept me away from the Subtle Knife. I like full cast type stuff but the production issues of this series bother me. I was hoping you would say it was nice and clean

message 272: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Sorry, Travis. It's a good story, totally worth reading the old fashioned way!

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm finally reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter. It has been on my shelf for at least a couple of years; I don't know why it has taken me so long to get around to it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am down to the first two books that I started at the beginning of January after finishing Oryx and Crake, The English Patient, Jurassic Park and Zoo City. I put The Nightingale down and for some reason could not make myself pick it back up until now. I am determined to finish it. I am also still listening to The Mummy Case.

CFDeeDee I just finished First Grave on the Right .. Won't recommend it ..
So I grabbed Reckless
Hope I'll like it ..

message 276: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments I'm now reading A Good Place to Hide: How One French Community Saved Thousands of Lives in World War II for the French task in geocaching. Possibly could count for the threat of Auschwitz as well.

It's a heart warming book about WWII which seems silly, but it's about a group of villages who just banded together and sheltered people instead of sacrificing them to the authorities and thus concentration camps. We always hear about the horrors of WWII it's great to be reminded that people also did incredible things, at great personal risk, just coz it was the right thing to do.

Sometimes people are not crap, and just a bit wonderful, even when the world is crashing around them.

I'm only a third in though... the world may still crash...

Joan Sandra, I am looking forward to you evaluation, The Warmth of Other Suns is on my to read list too.

message 286: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments So far the writing style reminds me of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Did you read it?
It's very descriptive, and for moments it reads like fiction. I anticipate that it's the kind of book that could have had 100 or 150 less pages, but that's fine with me if it worth it.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Sandra wrote: "It's kind of a chunker, Travis, but the written style sees easy and fluid. Let's see how I like it."

I rarely find books less than 500 pages. A chunker to me is like 800+ pages

message 288: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments Reading What Was Mine What Was Mine by Helen Klein Ross , Odd Thomas Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz , and Red Queen Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard . All are good so far.

Does it fit geocache

message 292: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I finished the 3rd. book in Moore trilogy Bite Me.
I liked it very much. It is as opposed to Twilight Series, as it can be. That says it all.

message 293: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm finally back into reading mode! I finished The Killer Next Door and it was excellent. The character-development was excellent (although one was too stereotypical for my personal taste), the plot was engrossing, and I loved the ending. This is NOT just a story involving a serial killer. Yes, that's an aspect, but it is more about the relationships of the misfits all living in the same house. But, one of them is a serial killer!

After that I raced through Empire of the Ants and was thoroughly blown away. Here's my review:
This was an amazing book! I wish the other books in this series were translated to English. I was so invested in the human and ant characters I didn't want to put the book down. I loved learning about ants and their civilizations. It's just unbelievable how advanced they are and their are gazillions more of them than humans, and they have been around a whole lot longer than us. The human side of the story was a mystery as it progressed... what was happening in that cellar!? I could go into all the symbolism and such, but that's not really my style. I read for pure enjoyment! I highly recommend this book!

Now I'm on to The Sherlockian at the 9th hour!

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Sherlockian for the group read and was inspired to buy The Complete Sherlock Holmes.

I'm not sure which print book I'll start next. There's a weekend between now and February 1st, so I can't start my challenge book. One of my geocache books, Green Grass, Running Water is on hold at the library. It was shipped 9 days ago! The other two print books on my February list are chunksters.

ETA - Oh, I know! If Green Grass doesn't come in today, I'll start A Study in Scarlet since I just bought The Complete Sherlock Holmes.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished Anne of Green Gables and really enjoyed it. My reading had a good start this year. Four books read, of which three were 4 stars and one was 3 stars.

Not sure what to read next. We'll start a buddy read for Moloka'i in February so I don't want to start anything long. Maybe I'll read Hunted or Magruder's Curiosity Cabinet (which is a bit too much for two days actually).

message 299: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished a few books in the last couple of days. Revolution which was narrated by the author Russell Brand which i really enjoyed. I think I'd have given it 1 star less if I'd read the print copy, being narrated by him added to the enjoyment. The Bazaar of Bad Dreams which was good - all very written well stories with a couple that really stood out but it didn't blow me away. And Speak which was very different. All enjoyable reads. I'm now going to read a couple shorts/novellas starting with How the Marquis Got His Coat Back and then The Churn. Just a couple fillers, just because, until the start of the month and then i can get my teeth in to the books i have lined up for challenges and buddy reads.

message 300: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Finished Pie Town yesterday. I guess that I have been reading more dark and depressing stuff lately, but the ending seemed way too neat to me. Overall I like it but it wasn't my favorite. Suppose I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars. It was for my Mother/Daughter reading and I get to pick the next one so I am researching now...

I have been continuing The Scorch Trials on my nook for a couple of weeks now reading it at lunch time usually. I am about half way through and will probably finish in a couple of weeks.

Last night I started Hell Week which is book 2 in the Maggie Quinn series. It is also one of my tasks for Chile in the geocaching challenge so I am happy to finally get that started!
