Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Oh! I was just wondering about that yesterday, Travis. I can't wait either. Finally we'll get closure for that cliff hanger in book 5.

I finished The Bone Garden. It was my first geocache read (I was going to say kill). What a good story! Sarah, you'll want to add this to your historical medical reads. It's set in 1830, amidst young mothers dying of childbed fever, and medical students learning their profession on cadavers supplied by grave robbers.

Next up is Red Dragon, an impulse read thanks to Travis's mention. LOL!

Stephanie I started Mrs. Mike for the Geocaching challenge. I'm only 19 pages into the book. I'm really liking the story so far and it is holding my attention :)

Marie (eiram) | 26 comments I got Babičky: Mrtvý kuchař as a unexpected present from my daughter yesterday - I started to read it this morning and so far enjoying it:)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Finished A Redbird Christmas for the geocache challenge. Next up is The Girl From the Train which I got through Netgalley, but I just realized that it also fits with the India geocache task I planned to read.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finished Six of Crows over the weekend and it was a fantastic read! I can't wait for the rest of the series to be published!

After finishing Six of Crows I started Weavers, book three of The Frost Chronicles. I have been enjoying this series, but after 6oC, it just isn't capturing my attention as well.

Sigh, I need to start checking for narrator reviews. I didn't make it more than 20 minutes into two books this week because of narrators.

I really enjoyed Mariab, and if you are interested in medical history, you would probably like this book.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments I have picked up Open City for the geocaching. I'm reading it for the immigrants task in Canada. Only a bit in, but I'm liking the writing style so far. A bit lyrical. I was expecting it to be a quick read as it's thin, but the text is much smaller than I thought. If it's a good read, there won't be any complaining from me!

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I've been under a lot of stress lately, and haven't been able to focus on reading. I'll read a few chapters and then put the book down, because my mind isn't in the right place to escape into the book. Knitting seems to be my only workable distraction right now. I hope this passes soon, because I'm really enjoying The Killer Next Door and want to finish it.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Rusalka wrote: "Feel better, Debra. Hope whatever is stressing you out buggers off soon :)"

That would be our Human Resources manager where I work. She's a bully and I'm a perfect victim. I'm intimidated by her and have never been able to be strong and assertive with her. I feel like I'm back to my childhood and adult days where I endured bullying, and feel like a child all over again. Have ordered 3 books on adult bullying to see if I can find my spine. I've had about all I can take of her tactics and rude behavior. In addition, I've requested a meeting with my boss and her boss. My boss in great and she knows what I've been putting up with. Thing is 75% of the people working with me have had run-ins with this person and have told me their stories, and yet nothing is ever done about it. I don't expect anything will be done, but I need to be heard by someone else who cares.

Not to mention stress at home because one of our cars appears to be dead. I'm also dealing with severe arthritis and other pain in my back, and will be starting a very intense 8-week, twice-a-week program involving psychology of pain management/stress reduction, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. And insomnia.

Probably TMI. Just venting. Sorry!

message 120: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Whew. Sounds like you need a pause button Debra to get a chance to get a moment for yourself stress free.

message 121: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 13, 2016 02:07AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Not at all. I had a pretty bad case of workplace bullying before I joined goodreads. It's not about you finding a spine, it's about them interacting with people in a decent way. That was my problem in this situation, I was badly bullied in Primary school, and this woman just transported me back to being 10 and pointed at and laughed. In fact, my own team at work all did that. In a circle, pointed at me and laughed. But instead of being 10, they were 30-60 year olds.

Having someone on your side is most of the battle, and if that is your boss, then fantastic. I hope your meeting goes well, and it's great to know you'll have support and an advocate with you. But seriously remember, it's not you it's very, very much them. If they need to intimidate, harass, and generally make you feel shit to get through the day, then they have a major flaw in themselves. And that is not your problem AT ALL, but you are better than them. Although it doesn't seem to mean much when you're emotionally exhausted and crying at home, it is so incredibly true and you need to hear it.

Edit - I had to change some of that to past tense. Interestingly, remembering that made me write it in the present tense...

message 122: by Debra (last edited Jan 13, 2016 02:46AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Whew Rusalka, doesn't it just suck? At one of my jobs, the folks I worked with were old-school, and I was new and committed to my job. They pulled mean pranks on me and my boss did nothing about it. One day they rearranged all the furniture in the area where me and my temp team worked... tables and chairs moved. I was crying all the time. It was horrible. This has been going on with me all my life... since I was 8 and a fat, straight-A student, with a southern accent. It was very traumatic and they didn't send kids to psychologists back then, and my parents were emotionally unavailable to me. I didn't get relief from schoolyard bullying until I got into Junior High and became a band kid, and had band kid friends. Being overweight all my life has let to a lot of snide remarks, discrimination, and snickering. I've been the perfect victim all my life. Yes, I know it's not me... it's THEM, but it is so hard not to regress to that hurt, little inner child. Sigh... I'll get through this though. As my therapist reminds me, I'm stronger than I think. I kicked cancer with an upbeat attitude, I can kick this!

Thanks for piping in. I don't feel so all alone, now!

message 124: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 13, 2016 03:06AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Never feel alone. Ever. You have people who care and love you, both in real life and then us crazies on the internet ;)

Jeez people are jerks. I got bullied for so many reasons, but I've realised as I got older that other kids in my class where one of those and didn't get bullied (red head, good student, white skin, freckles, glasses, etc). I have realised as an adult I was incredibly precocious especially when littler, so I may have drawn attention to myself. However, that never excuses those kids behaviour, nor their behaviour when they become adult bullies.

And it's so easy to say it's them, even though it's true. I've left that workplace 5 years ago, and it shits me that all the confidence I built up as a teenager and young adult through effort and hard work to never be that bullied person again, got destroyed by some insecure adults in their new empire. 5 years later and I am still not that confident, but because I put up with it for a while. I thought, being new to the workforce, that that was the way work was, and I could handle it better as a grown up. I am still so so so ANGRY at them. How DARE they destroy me so entirely when all I wanted to do was be the best I could in a job I loved.

SO. Good on you for speaking up. And for finding an ally. And they are not empty words, you are better. And you're entirely right, you kicked something that we can't reason with and destroys people. You are a strong, crazy (that we love), woman that doesn't need this crap in her life. Tell them that! Grrr!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Debra, I'm so sorry to hear about the bullying! I got bullied by a housemate during my first year at university so I know how it feels. Just remember that bullies only act that way because they are insecure and it makes them feel better about themselves to pick on, belittle and intimidate others. You are a better person than she could ever be and ever hope to be, so keep positive and stay strong :) If all else fails, we have got your back.

Kristie | 19224 comments Good luck with your meeting, Debra! I hope they do something to help. Bullies are the worst. You are definitely not alone!

message 133: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through, Debra, that's tough, and it's draining. It's good to get it out, even if it's "venting" in a forum, to remind yourself that people are supporting you, because of the good person you are. I'm sending positive thoughts your way with your upcoming meeting. You got this.

After a weekend of not reading, I finally finished The Left Hand of Darkness. It was an interesting book, a little slow, with most of the action in the back half of the book. It's well worth reading, and it's Le Guin, so it's imaginative, and well written.

I'm still reading Leviathan Wakes and will start reading The Sherlockian tonight.

Hugs, Debra! You are deserving of so much more respect and I hope your meeting goes well.

I'm always afraid of rocking the boat, that if I say something or do something, some great catastrophe will be the result. It takes a lot before I'll stand up for myself. Funny thing is, when I do, I feel so much better. Setting up this meeting is standing up for yourself. Go you!

One of the films at the Banff Film Festival had a donkey in it - Donquita, was her name. Braying was her game, especially when one of the horses strayed a bit. She was the hit of the film. If you ever get a chance, watch Unbranded. It's apparently on Netflix. It's about 4 young Texans who ride wild mustang horses from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, up through some of the toughest terrain.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I take a look, Janice. Thanks for the tip.
My husband attended a Math conference in Banff last year. He says the place is dreamily beautiful. Well, dreamily is not a word he would use, that's my translation. :)

message 139: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I love Banff - one of my favourite places to go. It's one of the places we went almost every summer as kids. We'd go on a family camping trip every July and head to the mountains. When my ex and I were first together, we'd go every weekend. I even hitchhiked there with a friend (first and last ever hitchhiking adventure). I've always lived relatively close. I'm now at the furthest with a 10 hour drive to get there.

Yes, McCammon likes to make the long, involved kinds of books. Well worth the time, though.
