Jim (jimmaclachlan) We like "the Big Bang Theory" as well as "Young Sheldon". Both funny shows.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I didn't care for the "Young Sheldon" as much.

message 803: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Sheldon certainly is an interesting character. I only saw one episode of "Young Sheldon" and thought it was funny.

message 804: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We've been watching "Planet Earth" which is very good. Colorful! Beautiful scenery. Animals and mammals.

Still searching for a series to watch. Have lots of movies selected but need at least 2 hours to watch.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments A few weeks ago I purchased "Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series" with Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. A few days ago I finished a two-part episode "The Impossible Astronaut"/"Day of the Moon".

Very enjoyable--funny and offbeat ---even for Doctor Who.Yes, still a fan of Doctor Who!

message 807: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for posting, Mary.
I tried watching Doctor Who a while ago but didn't enjoy it. Seemed too complicated for me to follow. Besides, I'm not a fan of SF.

message 808: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Just finished watching, "Pillars of the Earth," and although very grim at times and somewhat difficult to keep the characters straight it was an interesting theme.

message 809: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments If you haven't already watched, "Candleford," it is good and Judy Dench is a marvel.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Nina.

message 812: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I wonder why they chose such similar titles: "CRANFORD" and "CANDLEFORD".

So easy to confuse them!

message 813: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I agree easy to confuse. I did like Cranford and isn't Judy D. a marvel?

message 814: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I've always loved Judi Dench. I enjoyed the sitcom "As Time Goes By".
I LOVED Geoffrey Palmer!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Netflix had new episodes of both "Father Brown" and "Death in Paradise" - both are funny and involve crime-solving.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Linda!

message 817: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments As Time Goes By had the most marvelous lines as well as actors.

message 818: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Father Brown was fun to watch.

message 819: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Overall I didn't like "Pillars of the Earth," movie. Perhaps the book was better but I doubt I'll ever read it.

message 820: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The Pillars of the Earth BY Ken Follett

I tried watching the movie a while ago but wasn't drawn in at all.

message 821: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, this isn't a movie recommendation but do you remember watching "Laverne and Shirley" or were you too young? I am so enjoying Penny Marshall's memoir, "My Mother was Nuts." I think it is one of the best memoirs I've read. I laugh at almost every page. Didn't you say you grew up in the Bronx? Maybe I got that wrong but if you did, perhaps you remember a store named Alexander's as she refers to it several times. She truly is a riot. Perhaps you have already read it.

message 822: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Still engrossed with the Penny Marshall memoir but it's not as funny as it goes forward into her life. She, however, is a good writer and the memoir is not boring so far. I don't want to give anything away but one episode in her life I don't approve of but perhaps that is just me. On the bright side, I am finally feeling the light at the end of the tunnel with my broken toes. After this long month of limping I can walk on two feet; most of the time.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments My Mother Was Nuts BY Penny Marshall

Yes, Nina, I remember it all. Yes, Penny Marshall's memoir is terrific. She's much smarter than she sounds. See my review at:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I gave it 5 stars!!!

message 824: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, did you grow up in the Bronx and if so did her story ring true? I understand why you gave it five stars. So, far so would I.

message 825: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Apr 09, 2018 05:00PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments No, I didn't grow up in the Bronx. I attended Hunter College in NYC.
Graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

message 826: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Is the Bronx not a good place to grow up? It sounded like Penny Marshall had a lot of fun growing up there.

message 829: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sounds not unlike many cities now; a good portion black but yet some affluent areas. This could be Kansas City at this time; not when I grew up there. I don't believe in segregation but the anti' segregation ruined my city; almost. We live now across the state line in a suburb in KS. And Joy you didn't say where you grew up. Also, was the Bronx an Ok place when Penny Marshall would have lived there?

message 830: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I don't know much about that.

message 831: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments So is the Bronx not a desirable place to live now? And still wondering where you lived in that NYC vicinity.

message 832: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Enid Blyton was a famous British children's author in the 1930's.

The question at FunTrivia was about her book, _Five on a Treasure Island_" (Famous Five, #1) (first published 1942).
Five on a Treasure Island BY Enid Blyton

message 834: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments When I looked her up it was an entire series of "Fives," and they seemed to be mysteries for the most part. It might be fun to find one today.

message 835: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I am not getting any Goodreads what are you...messages and am wondering if you or Linda have sent any in the past week. I questioned Jim and he said all he sent was on Weather when he answered me. I am receiving the Movies and Weather ones but not the other messages. Can you post one and I'll see if I can receive it. Thanks. I'll let you know if it works.

message 836: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I haven't been posting very much. You're not missing anything :)

message 837: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am reading, "A Year at Mulberry Cottage." by Virginia Connelly and just saw a reference to the "Famous five," and I think that is referring to the books by Enid Blyton.

message 838: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's quite a coincidence, Nina.

message 839: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We watched it long ago but are enjoying watching, "Little Dorritt," one more time. Such good acting in these BBC movies.

message 840: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments After the trauma of "Prince of Tides," I am content to wander through the English countryside by reading, "A Year at Mulberry Cottage."

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina wrote: "So is the Bronx not a desirable place to live now? And still wondering where you lived in that NYC vicinity."

Many of the brownstones in certain sections of the Bronx and Brooklyn are being bought for single families who don't mind walking up stairs. Some brownstones are 3-story and many are 5-story buildings.

I lived in Manhattan by Gracie Manor but moved when I was 9 years old. Many of the buildings in the area were rebuilt to the same height (5-stories), sky -scrapers and townhouses. The area is called Yorkville.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Another series of "Bosch" is on Amazon Prime from my favorite book author Michael Connolly.

Bosch is an American police procedural web television series produced by Amazon Studios and Fabrik Entertainment. It stars Titus Welliver as Los Angeles Police detective Harry Bosch. Wikipedia
First episode date: February 6, 2014
Network: Amazon Video
Program creator: Michael Connelly

message 844: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Have you liked Bosch, Linda? I really liked the books & thought the actors were all good for the parts, but they mixed the plots of the books up so I was too distracted. I kept thinking, "That didn't happen that way in the book." If they'd stuck to the book plots or changed things a lot more, it would have been easier to watch. As it was, I gave up. They messed up Quarry similarly, but even worse they changed the character. There's a lot to watch, so I'm pretty choosy. I don't seem to have a lot of time for it, anyway.

The rain quit & while it was a little muddy, I got the spinach, radishes, & snow peas planted finally. It's a couple of weeks later than I would have liked, though. I think I saw a couple of Purple Martins on the house first thing this morning. It wasn't very light out yet, though. If we have any, it's just a pair or two so far.

message 845: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, if you can remember the story line of "Little Dorrit" perhaps you can fill me in. Both, my husband and myself were confused at who was Little Dorrit's father. Was it the man who raised her in the prison? Was it Arthur's father? Was she illegitimate? And how did the old lady/Arthur's mother/ get little Dorrit's inheiritence? If this is too much info you could put a spoiler on your answers. I truly was a confusing ending to us.

message 846: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I have no idea, Nina. I can't remember that far back.

message 847: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks, anyway.

Good on possible sighting of Purple Martins. Impatiently waiting for spring to come.

I agree about the episodes on tv with Bosch. Changed the plots a bit. I have found myself saying, "What?"

Actor selections are good. Books are much better.

message 849: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Linda, I almost always prefer the book to the movie--they have to make so many cuts to fit everything in a two hour movie slot.

Books first, Movies second.

message 850: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments I am going to take a stroll down memory lane and mention some of my favorite older movies. How many have you seen?

My Fair Lady//// The King and I////////West Side Story///////
and The Sound of Music.
