Nina | 6069 comments One more good movie is "The Black Stallion," and great scenery and action.

See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I gave the film 5 stars out of 5.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments The Black Stallion -

5 out of 5 - adding this to my growing list - will be able to watch these movies during the winter weather - which is far far far away.

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, did you know they even had a snake trainer?

message 705: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments No, I didn't.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Went away to a cottage with no internet connections, no tv. We brought our laptop and 2 dvd's one was "Goodbye Mr. Chips." Well, we did not pack the charger.

Kindle Fire to the rescue. Lo and behold with my Prime membership there were 3 movies "on deck" which means you can watch movies directly from your Fire Kindle without the internet! Fabulous.

"Last Word" with Shirley McClain - plays Harriet the main characters - a controlling former business woman. New movie - release year 2017. We both liked the movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5023260/

The other movie "on deck" was "Creed" which is about boxing. I'm not keen on boxing - it was a rainy night, in pj's early so ... I just close my eyes during the boxing scenes. Starred Sylvester Stallone who plays "Rocky" (Rocky Balboa). Also included is Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show). This movie was ok.

Here's the link - I'll let you decide about watching (I watched because its all we had - and it was OK. Entertainment.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3076658/?...

Anyhow, when back home learned that I can make selections on which Prime movies to put "on deck." Good to have - in case power goes out (then recharge the Kindle via automobile charger).

Nina | 6069 comments Watched "The Fox and the Child," and very great scenery and characters; including the fox.

Nina | 6069 comments That is one reason I love my Kindle Light as I can read even with darkness surrounding me.

message 710: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Kindles are handy. I still prefer to read from a physical book.

message 711: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I agree about the Kindle, handy, but looking at maps or going back to glance at something is a pain. Real books for home, the Kindle for travel or if the book is only in eformat.

message 712: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments On my kindle light I can go back and then just push "go to" and when I say the page # I get back. Couldn't do that with my first kindle so know what you mean. I also like the feature that you can set the type as I am somewhat of an in between; don't need the large type from the library but don't like the very small print of some books and I do love the light behind the words. However, I am not reading a seven hundred page paperback so I use both.

message 713: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I can go to a page or back by percentage on my Kindle, too. I can also bookmark maps & go to them that way. It still takes longer, just like turning pages does. Intellectually, I know the 1/4 of a second difference is negligible. It bugs me, though. Constantly. More & more as the book goes on.

I know what you mean about small print, though. My eyes aren't that bad yet so reading glasses work for most everything.

Formatting is also an issue on many books since I get them in epub format which the Kindle doesn't support natively. While the conversions are good in other readers, they aren't always on the Kindle. I don't know why they have to have a proprietary format. Reminds me of Microsoft. It's a way to hog market share & tell the user what is best for them. I don't work that way.

Nina | 6069 comments Still Watching the Miss Fisher Mysteries set in Australia. Interesting settings and premises and great period clothing and then I am still reading the seven hundred page classic as it got better in spite of the wordiness. Now next month our book is, "The Memory Keeper's Daughter," and I read it so long ago I have forgotten it and so Joy do you have any reviews of it?

message 716: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks, Joy for your review etc. I found I still have it on my KIndle so will read it again. I can't remember if I liked it or not. I had a very good friend with two Down Syndrome children and raised them herself along with her husband and three other children. She was my daughter's Godmother.

Nina, exactly some of the reasons I liked watching Miss Fisher Mysteries. Period clothing, settings, the style of the homes and cars. Plus Miss Fisher's spunkiness! Books are good too. However, library only has the first 3 books. Oh well!

message 719: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am amazed at her designed clothes. A new and fabulous outfit almost in every scene and yes, the houses are outstanding. I am on Season 2, disk 4. And that may be the last in the series on Netflix.

message 720: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Learned that "Doc Martin" was back for streaming. However, not on Netflix. What?? It's on Amazon but you have to pay for Season 7 and Season 8 - $14.99. I don't think so. What a disappointment. Show is pretty funny. Scenery is beautiful of a seaside town.

What is Acorn TV? Haven't heard of Acorn. Can get this through Amazon via streaming except you have to buy the seasons.

message 721: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Looked up Acorn TV. Seems its been around a few years.

Here's a snippet: "Is Acorn TV free with Amazon Prime?

The Amazon add-on subscription is totally separate from a standard Acorn TV subscription and is exclusive to Prime members. All of the programming is the same, but you will not be able to sync your membership or watchlist across the two platforms or log in using the same credentials."

More info: "About Acorn TV
Acorn TV streams world-class mysteries, dramas, and comedies from Britain and beyond. Binge-watch a classic series or discover your new favorite show among dozens of programs available exclusively on Acorn TV. With thousands of hours of commercial-free programming and new shows added weekly, there’s always something to watch!"

Oh well, guess I won't be seeing anymore of my favorite British shows!!!!

message 722: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments This new movie is on Netflix. Added to my watchlist -
"In Our Souls at Night" with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.
I like the sound of the title.

message 723: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments In the article mentioned above Robert Redford states:
"You could waste a lot of your time debating or taking on every criticism that comes your way. It's just going to happen. You're a lightning rod in that respect. All we have to do is focus on what you really care about."

How true!

message 724: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I was shocked when seeing Redford on TV the other morning. He actually looked older than my ninety one year old husband. He definitely didn't age well.

He hasn't looked good for a long time.

message 726: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Robert Redford's is very weathered.
Watched the movie last night. Good to see Jane and Robert acting together again. Sweet movie. Some nice scenery.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments "Weathered" is a good term for it!

message 728: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Made me think of Robert Redford with Barbra Streisand in "The Way We Were."

Unfortunately I was on a date - went to the movies - and I couldn't leave the theater as my face was red and puffy from all the crying - and trying to cover my face from my date!!!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Today I watched an old bio-pic on the TCM channel. Very interesting.
"The Girl in White" (1952)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044663/?...
"The first female doctor in New York City comes up against prejudice from male counterparts who feel threatened by her skills."
Stars: June Allyson, Arthur Kennedy, Gary Merrill
Adapted from an autobiogaphy: Bowery to Bellevue The Story of New York's First Woman Amblance Surgeon BY Emily Dunning Barringer (Published 1950)

message 732: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments June Allyson is great. Directed by John Sturges.

Joy - thanks for posting. I'm going to look for this on tv and/or see if I can stream online. What may also be worth looking into is the autobiography.

Sometimes days are too short to do all one wants to do!

message 733: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments We watched a not good at all movie adaptation of "Huckleberry Finn," the other night/a musical and barely anything like the book. I had expected the old black and white that was good and was unplesantly surprised.

Nina | 6069 comments Watched a good/not new movie on Netflix last night starring Alan Alda and he was excellent; "The Longest Ride, " and I recommend it in case you haven't already seen it.

"The Longest Ride" (2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2726560/?...
"The lives of a young couple intertwine with a much older man, as he reflects back on a past love."

Here's the trailer: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2726560/v...

Nina | 6069 comments Saw a good historical British movie and also read the book. Fairly good adaptation of "Daniel Deronda." One of the main characters was the head of the Downton Abby family. Great actor.

Daniel Deronda BY George Eliot

I gave the Netflix DVD five stars out of five.

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, dare I say, "Great minds think alike?"

message 739: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I first heard of George Elliot when I was assigned to read "Silas Marner," in sixth grade and had no idea it was written by a woman back then.

Nina and Joy - this sounds very good. Thanks for information. I'll have to ask my husband if he's ever seen this - I don't recall. Going to put on My List to watch.

Thanks!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Last night watched, "Poldark" on Amazon Prime. Originally on PBS Masterpiece.

Good story so far. Takes place in 1783 after American Revolutionary War, nice scenery, good acting. Enjoyable.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Last night I streamed (via Amazon Prime) "Up in the Air" (2009) with George Clooney. Good movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1193138/?...
"Ryan Bingham enjoys living out of a suitcase for his job traveling around the country firing people, but finds that lifestyle threatened by the presence of a potential love interest and a new hire."

BOOK: Up in the Air BY Walter Kirn

message 744: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments "Up in the Air" is on my Netflix list. Watched "Cheaper by the Dozen," again last night after watching it the first time over fifty years ago. I still liked it and Myrna Loy was great in it. She was nominated for an Academy Award but won for Mrs. Miniver instead. Clifton Webb was very good in his part. Some of it wouldn't get filmed today;Planned Parented lady visiting their house etc. Parts of the movie reminded me of my son's house back when his nine children lived at home.

message 745: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I recently streamed (via Amazon Prime) "If I Were You" (2012) (starring Marcia Gay Harden)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587309/?...
https://www.amazon.com/Were-You-Marci...
"Marcia Gay Harden forms an unconventional pact with her husband's sexy mistress..."

The movie started out OK but then it lost momentum. Not a great movie, IMO.

message 746: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Finished Huckleberry Finn and sorry it is still banned in so many places. Hemingway said it was the best novel ever written. I might not agree with that but it is very interesting and such description is mind boggling.

message 747: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) While I liked Huck Finn, I think my favorite of Twain's is A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. I read it 5 or 10 years ago & it floors me each time with it's take on society & technology.

message 748: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I really liked his short story, "The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."

I'm not familiar with Marcia Gay Harden. Was going to look her up until I read your last comment about not being a great movie.

We are still enjoying "Poldark" - has anyone else watched this show? Stream on Amazon?

message 750: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I have Poldark on my Netflix list but at present we are watching and enjoying once again the wonderful "Downton Abby," Masterpiece theater series. Maggie Smith is my favorite character.
