Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Maggie Smith is good.

We tried "Downtown Abby" but probably weren't in the right frame of mind. Still have it on our Watchlist to give it another try.

"Longmire" - the last season will be on mid-November.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It took a little while for me to get into Downton Abby, but once I did, I was really into it.

message 753: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The actors are so good in their parts you almost feel you know them and that is what hooks you.

message 754: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) To celebrate Erin's birthday, we saw the latest Thor movie last night & all really liked it. It was good, full of the same roller coaster ride of action & snark that made the first Avengers movie so good. Stan Lee got a slightly longer part, too. Pure fun & a really good pick on the main song; Led Zepplin's, The Immigrant Song. Fit perfectly. All the actors were well cast.

I watched the new Spiderman during the week. It was exhausting, but not bad over all. Spiderman is younger which was OK, but he had the energy of a rat on crack. The addition of a wing man & high tech suit were unnecessary, as if they're trying to make him into Tony Stark/Iron Man. Aunt May as a MILF, no. Hell no! Old, kindly, clueless Aunt May was an iconic part of the comic books & they've blown that completely. Boo. Still, I'll watch another.

message 755: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Watching "Downton Abby," again. Still good.

message 756: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That was a good show. Too soon for me to rewatch, though.

message 757: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Watching "Reign" on Netflix about Mary, Queen of Scots.
4 seasons. Good so far, watched 2 episodes.

message 758: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sounds good Linda. I once visited Mary's castle and saw her son's cradle.

message 759: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It's on my list.

message 760: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina, no kidding! I would love to go around the world and visit all the castles. Such history.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We just finished watching a mini-series based on a book by Margaret Atwood - "Alias Grace"

https://www.netflix.com/title/80119411

Location: Kingston and Toronto Canada
Is Grace a murderess? Intriguing. Towards the end we were watching just to see where the story line was headed.

Overall a good mini-series.

An award-winning novel.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I tried reading _Alias Grace_. I found it very uninteresting. Many of the Goodreads reviews felt the same way. The story goes nowhere.

OOOPS! My error. _Alias Grace_ was very good.
I was thinking of _The Handmaid's Tale_ by the same author. (Margaret Atwood)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I just finished watching "About a Boy" (2002)
https://www.amazon.com/About-Boy-Hugh...

Based on Nick Hornby's best-selling novel, About a Boy. Starring: Hugh Grant.

I enjoyed it. It's a feel-good story with lots of thought behind it.
I streamed it via Amazon Prime.

I don't care for a lot of description either, Nina.

message 766: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I tried to order it but said "very long wait," so I'll try sometime later. I have had no luck in the past with the very long waits/like never get it.

message 767: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments If you keep it at the top of your Netflix queue, you will get it sooner or later. It's worth waiting for. RE: "About a Boy"

message 768: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks for your tip Joy. I'll try that.

message 769: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments You're welcome.

message 770: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am watching "Reign," and enjoying it very much. You might have already seen it. But, if not, it's on Netflix and I recommend watching it.

Oh good. You started watching Reign. We watch an episode each night. Also, watching the new episodes of "The Crown."

Good review. With your review, I will now add "About a Boy" to my watch list.

message 773: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I tried watching "Victoria". (TV Series (2016– )
These films about royalty are too slow-paced to be interesting.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5137338/?...
"The early life of Queen Victoria, from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert."

message 774: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Joy, I have "Victoria" on my watchlist. I found Season 1 of "The Crown" to be a good pace. Now Season 2 does seem a bitter slower paced.

message 775: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Started watching "Newsroom" with Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston, Jane Fonda and more.

3 seasons and 25 episodes 2012-2014

Very interesting. Fast paced. Watched 2 episodes so far.

message 776: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We really liked "Newsroom". Excellent show.

message 777: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I'm looking forward to watching another episode tonight. Probably not until 8pm as husband is blowing snow. :(

message 778: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Still watching Reign; Mary Queen of Scots.

message 779: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Happy New Year Everyone!

We watched movie "August Rush" - saw it a few years ago. A good feel movie.

https://www.netflix.com/title/70077533

message 780: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Still watching "Reign" and "The Crown." Truly miss the "Newsroom" and looking through Amazon Prime and Netflix for a good replacement.

message 781: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We are watching the series "West Wing" on Netflix. After all these years, we find the show to be good. Good casting.

Nina had mentioned a movie with Haley Mills. Now that's someone I haven't thought of in quite some time. Her sister is Juliet Mills. Remember "Nanny and the Professor?"

message 782: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Nina, mentioned she is now watching "Victoria."

Such a difference in the clothing styles from "Reign" and "Victoria." Victoria's clothing is more simple.

"Reign" clothing seems more like costumes. Embroidery. Corsets. Jeweled dresses. Lace. Some dresses have many layers. Men's blazers, jackets were very tailored, buttons, cuffs. Beautiful.

message 783: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Expensive!

message 784: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Yes, indeed! The tv series showed everyone in a couple of different outfits each episode. Makes me wonder how many gowns each Queen and her staff actually had in their closet. Seems so frivolous.

message 785: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments There's a great old movie available at YouTube:
"My Man Godfrey" (1936)
Stars: William Powell & Carole Lombard

YouTube LINK:: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3adHd...

IMDb LINK: (for info): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028010/?...

"A scatterbrained socialite hires a vagrant as a family butler...but there's more to Godfrey than meets the eye."

This is one of my favorite movies.

message 786: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - I just noticed that "My Man Godfrey" is also available free via Amazon Prime:

One of them is in color!

message 787: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It was a fun movie; good acting even if crazy.

message 788: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I don't usually enjoy seeing a movie a second time, but William Powell is exquisite in this film. And Carol Lombard is lovely.

Joy, thanks! I'll look for this on Netflix. We enjoy watching the old movies.

message 790: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Found "My Man Godfrey" on Amazon Prime (I miswrote and typed Netflix in earlier response).

We are still watching "West Wing." There are 7 seasons with 22 episodes each.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wes...

message 791: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Still watching "West Wing" and waiting for spring and to be outdoors more. Looking forward to drinking morning coffee out on deck and watching the birds.

message 792: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Probably be finished with "West Wing" tonight. Seven seasons. Certainly can get attached to the characters.

message 793: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That is how I felt about the characters in Downton Abby. My granddaughter who lives in the LA area wrote to me saying she was moving in February and when she saw the house for the first time she said it looked to her like Miss Havisham's. So she had to have it. I confess I had to google Miss Havisham. Do any of you know who Miss Havisham is?

message 794: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments No, didn't know anything about Miss Havisham. Looked her up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Ha...

I love the book "Great Expectations" and the movie too! I can recall the mansion which was in much disrepair.

message 795: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It was the grounds that reminded my granddaughter of Miss Havisham's place. You had to enter through an iron gate and there were lots of lovely plantings.

message 796: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Oh, yes. the grounds were beautiful. Plantings can be so welcoming.

message 797: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments To relax last night after our trip, we finished watching "West Wing." Very good show. Ending was satisfying. Good casting. Will miss the show and all the characters.

On to the next ...

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I sometimes watch The Big Bang Theory on TV. The relationship between Sheldon Cooper and Amy Fowler is so amusing.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898266/?...

message 799: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I don't know who either of these people are.

message 800: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The Big Bang Theory is an American television sitcom.
See WIKI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big...

Here is a link to a Youtube video showing: "Best of Amy & Sheldon":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5ul7...

Sheldon is Geeky and socially awkward. An interesting character.

Some of the actors on the show make tremendous salaries.
