Haven't heard of this movie. Like the cast. Adding to my list.

We enjoyed "The Irishman." Yes, another movie about the mob with a great cast.

There was a scene shot in Williston Park on Long Island, "Hildebrandt's Ice Cream Shop" a local favorite. Made great hot fudge sundaes. I used to live on LI.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Anyone watch, "Saving Mr. Banks?" We did. Good cast. Movie seemed to drag a bit.

Walt Disney, Mary Poppins ...

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No, but I saw "Knives Out" starring Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, and Christopher Plummer. It was kind of strange, but really good. It's a murder mystery that had a real vibe from the game "Clue".

Librarian suggested it to me.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Anyone tried "Pluto TV" - To my knowledge viewed on cell phones. I installed the app just for kicks. Never thought I'd watch movies or news, etc. on a cell phone. Did find a use - my analog tv in the basement where we have a stationary bike and treadmill - no longer works. So this morning I took my cell phone with me and watched a movie - a silly movie - has commercials - I did stay on the bike for 30 minutes.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Haven't seen any good movies on tv. May end up resorting to our personal dvds and rewatch them.

Nina, Jim - watch anything good lately?

message 1311: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm watching "Justified" again. I'm ready to start the last season now. After watching the first episode, I couldn't believe how good it was. It really sums up the entire series & yet the rest is even better. Leonard had a real knack for creating imperfect characters that are so easy to relate to & putting them in morally ambiguous situations where their choices take them along some rocky paths.

There are 3 main characters: Raylan, Boyd, & Eva. They grew up together in tough situations. Their fathers were criminals & Eastern Kentucky didn't give them a lot of opportunities. Raylan joined the US Marshall's service while Boyd went into the Army & returned to his roots. Eva never got a chance to go anywhere. The series revolves around their interactions both good & bad, but finally comes down to a showdown between Raylan & Boyd. It's fantastic.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments My husband Fred and I have watched this series about 2x times so far. Its quite good. We couldn't believe a show as good as this was cancelled and some other crap on tv keeps going and going.

We also like Longmire - and have watched this 2x and may do a third if nothing good pops up.

I'm waiting for April 17 when the next Season of Bosch will air on Netflix. I've read all the Harry Bosch books and the story keeps in line with the book. Very enjoyable.

message 1313: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm glad 'Justified' ended when it did. Too many series go on too long & go bad. It ended on a great note.

I've seen a couple of Longmire episodes & read a couple of the books. For some reason it never grabbed me. I suspect because the good people are too good. I appreciated how bad Raylan could be at times or how good Boyd could be.

message 1314: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Jim, a good point - some series do go on and on when they really have nothing new or interesting to offer the viewer.

message 1315: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Watched, "Moonstruck" which haven't seen in quite a few years. I laughed and I cried. I think Olympia Dukakis is great. Good cast.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093565/

My sister would rate this as a 1 on a scale of 1-10 and 10 the best. Gave the rating because of Nicholas Cage. I gave it a 9 because a fast moving story with comedy and romance and good acting. Because we were both at different ends of the scale I asked my husband how he would rate Moonstruck and he gave it an 8.

Wow! My sister and I do not have the same taste in movies.

message 1316: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've started watching "Bosch". I tried when it first came out, but I'd just read the books & the TV series mixes those story lines up. It was too distracting. Now that it's been 5 or so years since I read the books, the details have faded enough. It's pretty good, if depressing.

message 1317: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I could binge on "Bosch" but am limiting one episode an evening. Love it.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Just before Omaha closed all the libraries, I borrowed the first season of "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman". Never saw it on Tv and thought I would try it. Quite pleased---very enjoyable. Stars Jane Seymour as the first woman doctor in Colorado Springs in 1876.

message 1319: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) No new movies, although I'm finding Mad Men informative, entertaining, and at the same time disconcerting. Has anyone else watched all the episodes. I'll be finishing in a couple days.

message 1320: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Saw it on TV and yes Medicine Woman was entertaining.

message 1321: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments I've never watched "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" or "Mad Men" - binge worthy?

message 1322: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Mad Men is 7 seasons long with approximately 13 47 min segments per season. If you like binging this show is for you!

message 1323: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Finished the 7 season Mad Men last night. I highly recommend it for the history, characters, and psychological interplay, it all leaving me with some of the main characters finally discovering what love really is.

Will give it a try Jake.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Linda wrote: "I've never watched "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" or "Mad Men" - binge worthy?"

I regard "Dr. Quinn" as very binge worthy if you like historical series. Set in Colorado Springs in 1876. Lasted six seasons. Quite popular in its original run.

message 1326: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Mary,

I do like historical series and nice settings like Colorado Springs.

I do recall watching a few episode many years ago. Six Seasons is good for binge watching - I try to steer away from shows done years ago and are only one season.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We've been watching "Corner Gas" which I find quite funny. A little silly and then someone will say or do something that if I were drinking something well let's say I'd spit it up or something.

Told my sister about the show and she didn't think it was funny. Hubby and I thought it was good, light-hearted, a little silly and funny.

Canadian show - https://www.cornergas.com/original/

Try it - for laughs!!!!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Linda wrote: "We've been watching "Corner Gas" which I find quite funny. ..."

Thanks! I'll give it a shot. Humor is tough. We never found Seinfeld or Portlandia funny, but loved the IT Crowd while some of our kids were just the opposite.

message 1329: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Jim - Corner Cafe also has an animated version.

Seinfeld you have to be in the right mood. We never watched Portlandia.

Let me know your thoughts on Corner Cafe. As I mentioned, wasn't my sister's cup of tea. Hubby and I may watch it again.

Nina | 6069 comments Just watched a recording of the life of Gorge Caleb Bingham, frontier artist, and it was fascinating. I recommended it.

Nina | 6069 comments Just watched an old movie this afternoon, "An American in Paris, starring Gene Kelly. Good story but the dance and songs parts were a little too much.

message 1332: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Jeopardy is now showing old shows. Just saw the first one from 1984. Wow! Things were different then. Fun to see.

message 1333: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Watching "Call the Midwife," on Netflix. Good acting and interesting story plots. I once had a friend who was a British midwife who told me she once delivered a baby in a rowboat on the North Sea.

Nina | 6069 comments I once sent Joy an email sometime back but it was returned as no longer available. I miss her.

message 1335: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I miss her, too.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Joy says hello to everyone, but she has some issues that make using the computer difficult.

message 1337: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just watched "Noble House" (1988) starring Piers Brosnan as Ian Dunross. It was really well done, a mini series of 3 two hour movies. Even at that length they had to cut some stuff that was in the book, but they did a good job & retained all the important threads & flavor.

Clavell's Asian Saga starts with Shōgun which is set in the late 17th century, I think. It was also a mini series in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain. The next book Tai-Pan is set in the mid 19th century. It was made into a movie in 1986, just 2 hours, so pretty slim. Much of Noble House is based on it, although it's set a century later.

There are 2 other books in between. Gai-Jin comes right after Tai-Pan chronologically, although I think it was the last published. I like it the least. King Rat is about life in a Japanese POW camp. It was a really good movie (1965) & the shortest of all the books. Most of them are bricks.

The last book chronologically is James Clavell's Whirlwind. It takes place in Iran & is about the time of the hostage crisis. I've never read it. It's thicker than any of the others save for perhaps Shogun & the subject doesn't interest me. It's the only one that isn't set in the Far East & I don't think most liked it as well.

If you're looking for some good movies to watch or books to read, I highly recommend them. John Lee narrates some of the audio books & he's fantastic.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) A comedy drama called Interstate 60 (2003). Watch it free on TubiTV here:
https://tubitv.com/movies/583317/inte...

I was tickled by a lot of it & it has a high rating on IMDB. It features a theme between a father & son that is good & wraps up well. In between is a romance with tough choices. The drug & lawyer towns were interesting ideas. Good actors with some great ones in smaller roles.

message 1340: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill was a reread, but it had been so long (45+ years!) that it was fairly new. It was great as an audiobook & I watched the film immediately afterward. Perfect order & a great experience. My 5 star review of them both is here:

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, After my son who was then in high school saw the movie he and his friend dug a tunnel in our back yard.

message 1342: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our neighbor was in that same camp.

message 1343: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You're a nice parent, Nina. I wouldn't let our kids dig tunnels.
:)
