Funny, we watched this last week - guess I didn't write anything about this movie - probably because I couldn't post.

Thought it was a good movie. We watched via You Tube and streamed it to our large tv - first time we used this method.

Nina | 6069 comments Tonight we're watching "Crazy Rich Asians." I will post my review tomorrow.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments OK, Nina. Thanks.

message 1208: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It was a very entertaining movie. I wondered why it was so popular and now know why.

Nina | 6069 comments Interesting movie last night; "Adrift," based on true happening.

Nina | 6069 comments Watched "National Velvet," after a long time in between. Still a good movie and Elizabeth was certainly a beautiful child.

message 1213: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Nina, it was a great movie and she was so lovely!

message 1214: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments We rented "The Mule" with Clint Eastwood. Some violence; a good movie. A 90-yr old male becomes a mule to help his family financially and make amends. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7959026/...

We watched on Netflix and is available on You Tube, Diane Keaton with Morgan Freeman in "5 Flights Up." https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2933544/
Enjoyable.

message 1217: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We thought "The Mule" looked a little too dark. If it's really good, like "Gran Torino" was, we might watch it anyway.

Nina | 6069 comments Just watched, "Notting Hill" again after a long time in between and it was still fun. I recognized one of the characters as the father in "Downton Abby."

I guess that was Hugh Bonneville. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Bo...

Also in it was Hugh Grant whom I love. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Grant

Nina | 6069 comments I haven't been getting "What are you reading..." mail. Are you sending any Joy? Could you post one? Thanks.

message 1222: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I haven't been reading much lately. Mostly I play cards online. I play Hearts. It's a great game and easy. Here's the link:
https://cardgames.io/hearts/
The directions are there too.
My son says it's a safe website.

message 1223: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks Joy but won't be playing any games soon as we are still in the midst of reconstruction with furniture everywhere/hardly can walk through our house and now today we are finding another water leak. It seems to never end.

message 1224: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sorry to hear that, Nina. Hope things clear up soon for you.

message 1225: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments My ninety three year old husband went up into the attic to check the walls so see where the leak was coming from and fell and cut his wrist but at least he didn't fall through the ceiling but said he was afraid he was going to do so. He promised me he'd never go up there again. Keep you posted.

Running Free (1999)

"The tale of the extraordinary life and times of Lucky, a horse that was born in captivity but achieves his dream of running free with the help of a stableboy."

Sounds like a good one, Nina. Thanks for posting.

message 1230: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Watched "The White Cliffs of Dover," and it wasn't great but good acting; Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Roddy McDowell, and beautiful little girl Elizabeth Taylor. Too sad and I guess it was supposedly for the war effort but a bit silly with all the dialect in poetry.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's really an oldie, Nina. Thanks for posting.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments I have finished five seasons of "Downton A bbey" this month and really, really enjoyed it. I will see season six this week. Then, the Downton Abbey movie opens on September 20th! Looking forward to it!

message 1233: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's a great show, isn't it? We're looking forward to the movie, too. Looks great from the trailer we've seen.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I've always loved Hugh Bonneville in the role of Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham.

Nina | 6069 comments Saw a very good trailer of Downton.. and so good to see those characters one more time. Interview with Tom and he said appearing one more time is like riding a bicycle. Easy as falling off a log once you've done it. I especially liked his character. And Mary looks stunning in her new bob haircut. Also, Tom said the movie takes place about six to seven months after the last episode.

Nina, which "Tom"? Do you mean Allen Leech, the one who plays the role of Tom Branson?

Here's his picture:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1395602/?...

Tom Branson is the former chauffeur and the current estate manager for Downton Abbey.

Nina | 6069 comments Just watched an Agatha Christie movie and couldn't figure out the ending, Frustating. "A Truth for Murder."

message 1240: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I was never a fan of mysteries. Too confusing and convoluted!

message 1241: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Agatha Christie's "Hercule Poiret," were good and easy to understand. Not so, many of the others. I also really liked "Morse" on TV,

message 1242: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I never watched "Inspector Morse" on TV.

It's a good mystery and is keeping my attention.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Watched "Mary Poppins Returns" on DVd with two friends. Very good movie, enjoyable; mixture of animation and live action. Music was good---my favorites being "The cover is not the Book " and "Trip the light fantastic".Nice ending which includes Angela Lansbury as The Balloon Lady. Not quite as good as the original Mary Poppins movie with Julie Andrews, but pretty close. Treat you family to a fun evening or two and watch both "Poppins" movies. '

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Mary JL, thanks for posting. I've heard good things about that movie but I haven't seen it yet.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I came across some documentaries by Humphrey Jennings that he did for the Ministry of Information (United Kingdom) today. Interesting stuff.

"A Defeated People" Germany After WWII (1946) is about the British occupation & administration of one part of Germany after WWII. Pretty brutal, even beneath the propaganda. Very strict rules & rations.

The Farm (1938) is a very nice tour of a good sized farm. No mention of a tractor; they use a horse drawn seeder. Quite a few cute babies & fun commentary. It's actually unintentionally hilarious in parts. The commentator talks about corn while they're actually working on barley, wheat, or rye. And then it becomes hay rather than straw. City guy, I guess.

I look forward to watching more of these.

Nina | 6069 comments I lived on a farm from 1929 until 1936. I don't remember too much as I was only two when we moved there and six when we left. My parents worked in the city and I stayed with my grandparents who also lived on the same property but in a different house. Also, living there were my paternal grandparents and great grandparents and great great uncle. It was the Depression and I think they all lived in the same place to save money. There was no tractor; just horses and a wagon and I suppose a plow.

message 1250: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Interesting but sad to read about the mistreatment but was it understandable? Probably not. War is so cruel to so many undesereable.
