Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Today I watched a DVD from Netflix:
"7 Faces of Dr. Lao" (1964) (Stars: Tony Randall, Barbara Eden)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057812/?...
"A mysterious [and magical, fantasy] circus comes to a western town bearing wonders and characters that entertain the inhabitants and teach valuable lessons."

Tony Randall played all 7 "faces".

Adapted from: The Circus of Dr. Lao (first published 1935) by Charles G. Finney

It kept me watching but I wasn't really enjoying it. I stayed with it because I've always enjoyed Tony Randall.

Not so sad when you hear about how circuses mistreat animals:

"10 Reasons Not to Attend the Circus"

message 556: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I wouldn't trust anything PETA says, Joy. PETA is well known for twisting the truth & many of their supporters don't believe humans should own any animals at all. They pretty much say that in the very first reason they list for not attending circuses.

Their adoption rates for rescued animals are abysmal according to several sources. Here's an article from the Washington Post which states that they KILL over 80% of the animals they get. By contrast, our local Humane Society has adoption rates of over 90% for dogs & 70% for cats.

I've run into PETA folks several times & my respect for them declined sharply each time. They were absolutely ignorant of the animals they professed to support. They think riding a horse is cruel.

One time they were protesting a horse show & they jumped out in the road in front of a truck with a horse trailer just before the turn into the show grounds. A pony was severely injured when the driver had to slam on the brakes even though the truck was doing less than 20mph.

Don't you think a few animals in captivity to awe people builds an empathy that helps their wild cousins? I'm not saying all circuses were always great, but most of them have treated animals really well for many decades. Circuses were one of the main reasons the Humane Society & ASPCA got started. Their public abuses formed a very hard core of people who wanted animals treated better. Now they've been treated better right out of the lives of those who will need to protect them in the future.

message 557: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I saw an interview of the circus people and they were so sad to be leaving but said their animals are to be well taken care of by different sanctuaries. Hope that is the truth. We used to take our children to see the circus parades in Milwaukee and they loved it.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope you're right, Jim and Nina.

message 559: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It seems to be a moot point now, Joy. PETA also opposes zoos & wildlife parks according to their own page here:
https://www.peta.org/about-peta/why-p...

They're ignorant fanatics who use a few bad examples to promote their agenda which is inherently, cruel, short-sighted & unworkable.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Last night we watched a movie. Good to do since we had no tv for a week. No internet, no wifi and could only use phone if we left the cottage and went a mile north. :) All good.

Watched on Netflix: "The Blind Date" made in 2015. French speaking with English subtitles. Worth it! Comedy, romance.

Woman is a pianist - at one point she is playing so beautifully brought tears to my eyes.

Man is an inventor.

A little corny, yet fun. Interesting. Sweet. A nice ending. No violence (only a little loss of temper here and there).

Don't read the plot summary from Wikipedia. Tells too much. Gives the story away. You need to flow gently with the story.

Saw it last night and my mind still goes back to the story.
Definitely something I'd watch again.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Is this the movie, Linda?
The Blind Date (2000)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241250/?...

No, it can't be. Can't find the 2015 one.

Maybe it's this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4466936/c...
In French.

message 575: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Yes, it's the French one. If you can get it on Netflix and don't mind subtitles (good for the mind) give it a go!

message 576: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Couldn't find it on Netflix DVD. It must be on Netflix streaming which I don't subscribe to.

Nina | 6069 comments Watched an excellent movie/"Our Little Sister" filmed in Japan/subtitles. On Netflix. Other good one tonight, "Ithaca," and took a while for me to reconize Meg Ryan and bit part by Tom Hanks. Have you seen either of them in the last year?

message 580: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Here's a link to "Our Little Sister" won some awards:
http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/our...

Here's "Ithaca" - which stars Meg Ryan who also directed the movie and also stars Sam Shephard
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3501590/

Meg's movie didn't get good reviews but I think getting to see Meg and Tom Hanks along with Sam Shephard in a recent film is worth a watch!

Nina, I haven't seen or even heard of these movies. I will search for them on Netflix.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Glad you liked it, Linda. You might find Pocket handier than saving items as a favorite. I do since I can login to it from any browser on any computer to find an article I previously saved. You can use multiple tags on them, so it's easy to find them later, too.

Never heard of "Pocket" - I'll give it a go. My favorites are getting so full it's hard to find things. Will need a few hours to clean up the favorites and get rid of ones no longer relevant.
