My husband likes hamburgers and thickshakes as well. Occasionally we will go to Johnny Rockets - which in this location is part of the Great Escape Hotel (outdoor rides and indoor water park).

We'll share a thickshake - to keep our calories down!!!

Nina | 6069 comments We watched "La La Land" last night and over all I enjoyed and mostly agreed with Joy's review and the first one/NYT, I couldn't see any semblance of racist and anti feminism as suggested by the New Yorker review. I am curious if the actor who played her husband in one of the last scenes was the same one who was her first boyfriend who she referred to as sweet Greg. Joy, what do you think? Long ago I once lived in LA as a nineteen year old so it was somewhat nostalgic for me. although I was a college student not an aspiring move actress.

Nina, I was curious about that too. (Great minds think alike.) :) Don't know the answer.

Nina | 6069 comments My husband is home and well considering he is over the surgery part and must only go back tomorrow to see the dr and then be careful for the next week not to bend over or lift heavy items etc. Today as I was sitting in the waiting room I was talking to my friend who drove us there about the movie "La La," and she too enjoyed it and neither of us minded the ending as she said many of her friends did. Spoiler alert: She did think the main actress wondered at the end "What if...?" I thought it ended well as he looked at her and smiled and she did the same as if yes, this is life.

Nina | 6069 comments Tonight watched "Nanny McPhee," for the second time. Watched it years ago so didn't remember much. A fantasy but great acting by Emma Thompson and Colin Firth. I enjoyed it. A bit of a stressful day so perhaps I was ready for something "out of this world."

message 508: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, glad to hear that your husband's cataract surgery went well.

I thought the "what if" ending of La La Land was very sad even in spite of the smiles at the very end. One review described the tune played on the piano at the very end as "maudlin".

message 512: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Didn't she go to a business dinner with Greg in the movie the night she was to see a movie with the leading male actor? Her husband, or should I more poliically correct say, her significant other, at the end was not the same guy as at the restaurant.

message 513: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jake, you may be right!

message 514: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Regarding the ending of La La Land... After giving some thought about it, it was 5 years after the girl made it big and with the strong encouragement of the male lead. Obviously there was more that transpired regarding their relationship during that time. I doubt she made it big and completely forgot about him. Her dream of stardom came true with his encouragement, but I suspect he still needed to work playng music he really didn't care to play with the band he joined so he could make money to fund his dream. He may have been on the road. They both may have been on the road and drifted apart. I think, as shown in the movie, they saw what might have been and were sad, but then realized that their time together helped both of them realize their dreams, and so they smiled at each other knowing that they helped each other and they would be okay and cherish that.

Nina | 6069 comments JAKe wrote: "Regarding the ending of La La Land... Both of their "jobs" took priority over their love for each other at that time and their ambition won out in the long run and I think they both thought that at the end in spite of what might have been.

Nina | 6069 comments You woodworking is awesome and I mean that even if it is an overworked word. Saw the surgeon today and although my husband is over the surgery he can't see well out of the operated on eye yet and is in pain. Hopefully, the pain will ease but the dr said it might take up to thirty days for the vision to improve. We'll hope it is sooner than that.

message 518: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Nina. Hope the pain goes away & full sight comes back quickly. Eyes are very painful & irritating, but usually heal fast. One side effect is it's super easy to get dehydrated when they're injured.

message 519: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks for the tip Jim. He did have a huge mug of tea for lunch and I'll try to keep up the liquids.

message 520: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Good luck. Marg is very susceptible to dehydration & wound up on an intravenous drip after getting an eye injury once. She got a piece of metal in it, very painful. Once out, her eye was healed up in a few days.

They also warned us about it when Erin got alkaline in her eyes. Young Edison, my oldest boy James, decided to take apart an alkaline battery one day. He squished it in a vise & it squirted under his arm & hit Erin directly in the eyes. We made the trip to the ER with me rinsing her eyes in the back seat. Once there, they flushed both eyes with 2 liters of saline via things that looked like suction cups they put over the eyeballs & under her lids.

They said our prompt washing & medical attention saved her sight. Only the outer layers were burned off, but nothing deep enough to cause scarring. In a week, she was all better. Scary evening. One of too many with the monsters.

message 521: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Scarey times, Jim. I think we might have had something like you describe as this brings it somewhat back to me but I must have blocked the details out of my mind. But good news is that my husband just came into the kitchen and said, "I can see." so the fuzzies are gone. He said the dr told him she cut a blood vessel and that is why his eye ball is red and he thinks she probably stitched the vessel and that is why he feels some discomfort. But, glad the worst seems over. He had a big cup of tomato soup tonight so maybe the liquid helped the healing along.

message 522: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Super. Glad he's doing better.

message 533: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks, I put "Shall We Dance" on my netflix list. Did anyone ever read a book by an author and loved the story and the writing and then read another book by the same author and couldn't believe it was actually written by that author? This just happened to me. I loved the book, "A Gentleman in Moscow," and so ordered by the same author, "The Rules of Civility" and only read a few pages and it was so boring, I quit.

There was a big change from McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize winning book, Lonesome Dove, published in 1985, and, Loop Group by the same author, published in 2004!

message 536: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) IIRC, the mini series of Lonesome Dove followed the book pretty well. I loved both, too.

Nina | 6069 comments Many years ago we watched, "Dancing With Wolves, " and liked it. We are watching it again and as it is three hours long we stopped after two hours. It is still the good movie I remember. Some outlast their fame and are no longer enjoyable. This one/great acting and great storyline.

Yes, that is a good movie which can be watched again. I didn't realize it was 3 hours long. Dr. Zhivago is a long long movie. Another oldie but goodie.

message 541: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Dr. Zhivago is 3 hours and 20 minutes and won 5 Oscars

Nina | 6069 comments I am sure I have watched Dr Z more than twice. I could watch it again just to hear Lara's theme. Wonderful movie that transcends time.

message 544: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Oooooh, yes Lara's theme. Pretty.

message 545: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Just watched "Twelve O'clock High," again. I must have seen it very many years ago. Gregory Peck still a fine actor in it. Good suspense even if you knew the ending. Once read if it wasn't for WWII what would Hollywood do for movie themes. Also, this movie of that war brought back memories of a trip I did many years later never dreaming I would once be staying in an apartment building in Berlin that was once the Nazi headquarters and also that I would be facing a machine gun pointed at me on the other side of the wall in East Berlin.

message 548: by Nina (last edited May 29, 2017 07:07PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments At the time I was pretty scared. I was walking between land mines and dogs were barking at me and a guard in a tower was shouting, "Verboten!" And pointing the gun at me. I wasn't supposed to be on that path but we were planning to leave East Berlin but the guard had whisked away my six week old granddaughter in her buggy and disappeared and we were so frantic/my son in law and daughter/that I decided to try and find her. I did find her in a hut on the other side of the yard. Finally, they brought her back to us. They thought we were smuggling a baby out of East Berlin. I was so relieved to see our American flag once we were on the other side of the wall.

message 549: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Did you know Gregory Peck kept track of his movie daughter in "To Kill a Mockingbird," and always sent her a card or present on her birthday and she often visited him. She once said he was like a second father to her. We have no proof but he resembles my husband's family on his father's side. My husband is a Peck.
