Benjamin L | 50 comments I'll certainly try for a Level 1 Bachelor of History! I should be able to swing at least three books, not sure if I'll get into more than a couple categories though.

PS, I'm also new to the groups on Goodreads, so ... please be patient with me.
PPS, Since the settings are not defined very sharply for the challenge, I've added some years to mine, for my own sake. Will provide justifications for each should anyone want to fight about it. Actually, I won't argue, but we could thumb-wrestle.

* Victorian England
[X] Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye, set in 1850s - finished 1/26/2016
[X] Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters, set in 1880s - finished 2/29/2016
[ ]

* Gilded Age America (1877-1914)
[X] The Chase by Clive Cussler, set in 1906 - finished 1/5/2016
[X] In the Fog by Richard Harding Davis, set 1902 - finished 5/17/2016
[ ]

* Early 20th Century (1914-1966) (This category *needs* splitting up! I'd propose Early 20th Century: 1914-1945, and Mid-20th Century: 1945-1966)
[X] No Game For a Dame by M. Ruth Myers, set in 1930s - finished 1/13/2016
[X] London's Glory by Christopher Fowler, collection of short stories, some set in the 1940s-1950s. Finished 3/21/2016
[X] A Front Page Affair by Radha Vatsal, set 1915 - finished 8/17/2016
[X] Shamus in a Skirt by M. Ruth Myers, set in 1930s - finished 9/19/2016

Lauren, I placed a "1" next to the category in my original post. Is there a different way to mark the post? I didn't see anyone else's original posts updated so I made up my own method.

Dawn, I htink the best way to update the post is to include the title and author of the book next to the category and the date that you finished reading the book. Something like this:

- Victorian England: The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer (Dec 31, 2015)

By the way, the challenge started on January 1st 2016 so if you read this book before that date, it cannot count toward the challenge. Sorry.

Dawn Allman | 102 comments Sorry, I will make the changes. I started the book on 01/01/16 and finished it on 01/07/16. I thought copying the date of my original listing was how I linked the two posts to each other. This is my first time trying to post things so I am still learning. Thank you for your help.

No worries. It took me ages to figure out how to do stuff :0)

By the way, If you want to link your original post in your new post, you need to put the cursor on the date and right click. Then choose "copy link" fron the menu that pops up and paste that link in your new post.

Vicki Cline | 65 comments I just updated my original post, message #11. Is it sufficient to keep updating that one with new books read, or do I need to also add a new posting linking back to it? https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Sandy | 1137 comments Finished my first book in the challenge; Funeral in Blue set in Victorian England (with a quick trip to Vienna). I love this series and this one reintroduced Hester's brother and sister-in-law, not seen since the first book(s). And it ended with promises of Monk investigating his past. The plot and atmosphere are excellent and I never guessed the ending.

Emily Gail:

So glad to see "Death at the Fair" on your list for the Gilded Age. You and others who enjoy that time period may be interested in the other books in the series, all set in 1890s Chicago: Death at Hull House, Death at Pulllman, Death at Woods Hole, and Death at Chinatown. The author is currently working on the sixth book in the series "Death at the Paris Exposition" set in 1900. That one will hopefully come out this summer.

If you are interested in historical mysteries set in 19th century Chicago you might also enjoy: Honor Above All, Shall We Not Revenge, and For You Were Strangers

Benjamin L | 50 comments Finished Jane Steele. So much fun! I'm not a huge fan of gothic novels, but this was a ton of fun, lots of twists and turns, and a great story besides. I'm working on a review over at my blog and it should be up today or tomorrow.

Added to my 2016 Challenge list.

Benjamin, can you please add the date that you finished reading the book to your original post?
Thanks.

Finished my first book for the challenge - Death Comes to the Village (Jan 26). The mystery is a bit predictable but the characterization is excellent. Lloyd has successfully captured the social and personal nuances of the time.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I'm glad you liked that one, Lauren. It was a pleasant surprise for me as well. I agree with you about the mystery but I just really liked both the male and female leads.
