message 233: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I've finally started and now finished my first for this challenge - my Labor Day read - The Ghost Map: A Street, an Epidemic and the Two Men Who Battled to Save Victorian London.

About the Soho cholera epidemic of 1854 and the ways 2 men - a clergyman and an anaesthetist with public health/epidemiology interests - approached research from two different angles to discover the cause of the outbreak and stop it. Together they tracked the course of the disease back to a contaminated water pump and helped put paid to the miasmatist theorists - those who believed in the "bad air" theory of spread of disease. I gave it 3 stars.
