Ghost Story (Dresden Files #13), by Jim Butcher; Start Date: March 3, 2014

I'm so tempted to ask you if he goes back to Harry but I have resisted so far!

I didn't expect it either!"
(view spoiler)

So... do you want me to post questions for the next two sections as I get to them?

So... ..."
Yes please , if you don't mind :)

30. I can’t decide whether it’s a good thing that Lea is teaching Molly (and Harry) or it’s a bad thing. What do you think?
I’m with you; I can’t decide if it is good or bad. Maybe 65% bad and 35% good. LOL!
31. I felt a bit better when I found out Molly is not the only Ragged Lady and Lea is helping too. What do you think of what Molly does? Creating illusion to make bad people kill each other.
Yes, I was relieved, too. I’m impressed with Molly’s ability.
32. If Lea could see Harry, why was she so surprised? And what did she mean by saying it’s rare for a shade to rise after the season in which it was made? Anything significant in this statement?
I don’t know the significance, but it has to be really important. Maybe it has something to do with the cheating aspect of whoever killed him. Or else it means he is really more powerful than Lea believed.
33. Have you read the short story "A Restoration of Faith"? Nick Christian is in that story and that’s were Murphy and Harry meet for the first time.
Nope. Haven’t read it, yet. Thanks for the info.
34. I don’t know how Fitz and his gang are going to fit in all this. I feel they are just page fillers! Of course they could just be the last link that connects everything! What do you think?
Oh, I never thought they were page-fillers. Hmm… But, I don’t know how they’ll work in. JB usually doesn’t waste a character.
35. The Corpsetaker has been a ghost for a few years, doesn’t it seem odd to you that she just now had gone to Morty to get a body and not before? If Morty is a second-tier asset and the big hoods are forth-tier assets, are there any first or third?
I wondered the same thing! Maybe she’s just more desperate now, or she’s learned some ‘how-to’ now.
36. I always wanted to know the details of what happened between Justin and Harry and how Harry ended up asking Lea for a favour. It seems I’m going to get what I wanted ;)
Yup.
37. Have you noticed that a lot of details from previous books are being mentioned? Bianca and the knife, Ortega, Arianna, Corpsetaker, loup-garou, and almost all the baddies came up so far. I’m sure there is a reason behind it. I think this book should have been named “memories”!
I was noticing that… but not the connection with “memories”… **smacks forehead** Duh! I was just thinking JB was giving us a long list of suspects. ☺
38. I can’t believe Harry tried to rob a convenient store, even if he was only sixteen!!!!
I know! Makes his reason for defending Fitz a little more understandable, and why he wanted to give him food and shelter.
39. Eeep! “Who Walks Behind” must be that Other creature that was mentioned a few times during the series. I think Harry had another encounter with it a few books back! Do you remember it?
Nope. LOL! Sorry.
40. I’m hung on something. In Summer Knight when the Summer Knight was killed, there was a shift in the sidhe courts powers. I remember that it was said when the knight was killed the knight’s mantle would go to the killer or the queen. So either the killer is now the Winter Knight or Harry is not really dead dead and is still the Winter Knight or the mantle doesn't belong to anyone! Which is it?
Ah! I hadn’t thought of that, either. Good question.

#31.Do you think it's morally acceptable? Isn't killing mortals with magic? She's acting as the judge ,jury and the executioner!

30- Lea definitely went to the same teaching school as Justin. She really seems to enjoy abusing Molly. I'm also not sure if the "lessons" that Molly is learning from her are ones that she should know.
31- Well I was wrong about Molly being set up but I'm also glad that Lea is responsible for some of the incidents as well (probably the ones that are out and out murder).
As to the ethical question, it is difficult. On the one hand, I would like to say that these people/creatures are evil and Molly only creates the situation in which they would do something that they would probably have done anyway.
On the other hand, from a moral perspective, she is responsible for their deaths. The bible says "thou shalt not kill" it does not say "thou shalt not kill only good people".
32- The impression I got is that she only saw Harry after Molly mentioned that he was a ghost.
Lea's comments only reinforce the idea that Harry is not a normal shade - there is something off about the way he has risen, which suggests that he may be brought back to life.
33 - Nope haven't read any of the short stories. I'm glad that we are getting a little background on Harry's life from before the series starts.
34. Knowing JB, they will definitely fit in something and will probably link everything together. There may be a connection between Baldy and Corpsetaker that we are unaware of as yet.
35 - It seems that Chicago was safe from many supernatural forces while Harry was alive so perhaps Corpsetaker couldn't take action to regain a body until after Harry was killed. In fact, maybe she is the one who orchestrated his murder.
Another questions is where will Harry get a body if he is brought back?
I think I may have missed the bit about 2nd tier and 4th tier assets. Assets to whom? Maybe the Black Council? In any case, there are probably first and third tier as well. I wonder who they are?
36 - I'm really glad that we are getting Harry's backstory. I also always wanted to know what happened as well as why "He Who Walks Behind" has always targeted Harry. Sounds like the he knew Justin.
37 - Most of the recent books have made reference to the earlier installments in the series but there are a lot of allusions in this one. The Denarians haven't made an appearance yet - I wonder if they will.
Yes, "Memories" would be a great name for it.
38 - I guess he was desperate - not that that is an excuse.
39 - If I remember correctly,"He Who Walks Behind" was in Blood Rites. He is the creature that Raith senior evokes to kill Harry.
40 - Great point, ShoSho. Perhaps the reason Harry is not a proper ghost is because his role as the Winter Knight stops him from being "dead dead" - it is keeping him attached to life somehow and something needs to be done in order to strengthen that attachment or severe it completely (if we are being pessimistic about things).

#31 – It is a very difficult call, especially as we are used to those three things being separate (judge, jury, executioner). Also, one has to ask themselves if their retaliating against an illusion is self-defense or not? Or premeditated murder?

#30 – Yes, that is what I didn’t like about it; Lea was enjoying it.
#32 – Yes, I wondered about that, too. Why couldn’t she see him before that?
#35 – Ah! Good theory on Corpsetaker.
#36 – Sounds like.
#39 – Ah, yes. Thanks for dusting off the cobwebs.

I had crazy busy day, I hadn't had time to comment on your answers yet(read them though).tomorrow will be the same. We've been helping sister in law move.

It's been a hectic week - I bought my very first car! Tons of paperwork and had to take it to the garage that specializes in checking out 2nd hand cars for purchase ... everything is OK though and I'm so excited - like a kid in a candy store...

41. A Pee-wee Herman impersonation? Really? LOL! Still, I liked learning about Harry’s first “Fuego!”
42. What did you think of Harry’s three questions of Lea? Were they good ones? We learn that Harry has to get to Corpsetaker before she possesses Mort or else he can’t get her out again. Me not having read Side Jobs, we learn a little more about the Fomor and that they are/were enemies of the Fae. Did you like the way he and she got around the third?
• Harry knows the killer.Do you know who his killer could be? A “he” for sure? Still, I’m still clueless.
• Harry’s death was one of thousands at this person’s hands.
• The killer was a proxy for another person more powerful than he.
43. BOOK QUOTE: “That’s it!” I blurted. “That’s how to handle the Corpsetaker.” Okay, I’m clueless over this, too, even though I’ve read the section prior to it several time. Were you?
44. Harry feels guilty about letting “sensitive” Molly go to Chichén Itzá. Could he have stopped her? I figure she would have just veiled herself and been a stowaway, right? Are some people more prone to PTSD than others?
45. What did you think of Bob’s “apartment”? His person?
46. Uriel!? Harry is being manipulated by Uriel? The “black-ops guy of archangels”? And Bob’s theory is he might be in cahoots with Mab? Comments.
47. What do you think about Harry’s analysis of The Walker? Could He Who Walks Behind be Justin’s old mentor? Does this make him good or evil? Well, he can’t be good, as he killed that innocent convenience store clerk, Stan, right? And what of Bob telling Harry what is acting now in Ghost Story is Harry’s soul – his eternal soul – not his spirit? If he comes back, will he have his same body?
48. All this makes me question Jack Murphy’s motives. You?
49. Daniel Carpenter has been tailing Butters on Murphy’s orders? WTH? Murphy really is paranoid.
50. Comments on Harry’s conversation with the Angel of Death and her being Father Forthill’s bodyguard? On HER not having Free Will?
51. Ah, Butters is duped! But Harry gets Fitz to turn back around. Did you like this scene?
52. Man-oh-man! Nobody trusts Harry! Not even Butters. Is this wise? Funny? Sad?
53. Marcone’s Vikings? Comments.
54. What did you think of Harry’s memories and Sir Stuart’s gun turning into a staff - and a symbol of authority to summon Mort’s spirits? Did you have any favorites among these spirits?
55. And Sir Stuart is back!
56. Despite his guilt, Harry summons Molly. And she says he’s “Clueless.” Is this an indication that she still has a crush on him? Comments.
57. Evil Bob! What a place to stop!

Yes me too! Unfortunately this narrator’s "Fuego" didn’t have the same tone that we are used to.
Although in some parts their voices were really similar , do you agree?

• The killer was a proxy for another person more powerful than Harry.
Do you know who his killer could be? A “he” for sure? Still, I’m still clueless.
Yes I LOLed at his last question!! I didn’t have any good guesses at that point
43. BOOK QUOTE: “That’s it!” I blurted. “That’s how to handle the Corpsetaker.” Okay, I’m clueless over this, too, even though I’ve read the section prior to it several time. Were you?
I don’t know either . I did listen to that part several times and I still don’t know what he meant by that.
44. Harry feels guilty about letting “sensitive” Molly go to Chichén Itzá. Could he have stopped her? I figure she would have just veiled herself and been a stowaway, right? Are some people more prone to PTSD than others?
No she would have insisted on coming regardless! Even if she had to veil herself .
I think so. Some people get over hard times in their lives easily and some would never get over it and keep reliving the bad experience. Not an expert on this but people are different on how they deal with bad stuff
45. What did you think of Bob’s “apartment”? His person?
Loved the apartment .I always imagined him an an older not a young man. I was surprised the first time he was described as a young man in this book. I think it has something to do with the JM voice for him
46. Uriel!? Harry is being manipulated by Uriel? The “black-ops guy of archangels”? And Bob’s theory is he might be in cahoots with Mab? Comments.
Yes I thought of Mab being around because of the weather ,but it never occurred to me she could be in cahoots with Uriel!
He is evil definitely! He is an “outsider” (sorry I referred to them as “others” before )creatures .Based on some prophecy or something alike (Laschiel told Harry) people believe Harry can overpower them . so I believe HWWB knew about this and maybe manipulated Justin to take Harry in and turn him to an evil wizard?! Why he didn’t outright kill Harry? I don’t know.
About the eternal soul and his spirit ,that’s what everyone was saying , he is something more . and I always thought if he is coming back he would need his own body.
48. All this makes me question Jack Murphy’s motives. You?
Well ,he knew Harry should go back so he just used his weakness to persuade him to do it! I didn’t doubt that he had good intentions .
49. Daniel Carpenter has been tailing Butters on Murphy’s orders? WTH? Murphy really is paranoid.
Yep , Murphy got on my nerves in this book!
50. Comments on Harry’s conversation with the Angel of Death and her being Father Forthill’s bodyguard? On HER not having Free Will?
I always thought angels have free will too ,like mortals according to religions. She was just keeping an eye on him so she can guard his soul . It sounded logical to me ! Mortals die when their time comes and she has no hands in changing or deciding it !
51. Ah, Butters is duped! But Harry gets Fitz to turn back around. Did you like this scene?
Yes ,but I still think Fitz and his crew were just page fillers!!! I was really disappointed by this part of the story!
52. Man-oh-man! Nobody trusts Harry! Not even Butters. Is this wise? Funny? Sad?
Not funny nor sad! It is just a wise thing to do
53. Marcone’s Vikings? Comments.
54. What did you think of Harry’s memories and Sir Stuart’s gun turning into a staff - and a symbol of authority to summon Mort’s spirits? Did you have any favorites among these spirits?
I was expecting the gun to turn into a staff from the moment Harry got it. I loved the twins :D
55. And Sir Stuart is back!
Woohooo ,loved this character
56. Despite his guilt, Harry summons Molly. And she says he’s “Clueless.” Is this an indication that she still has a crush on him? Comments.
I thought so
57. Evil Bob! What a place to stop!
Loved and just loved how Evil Bob was portrayed . SS uniform with a skull
Sorry about the short answers , I tried to answer without any spoilers!

So whomever wanted Harry dead is more powerful than the person who pulled the trigger.

So whomever wanted Harry dead is more powerful th..."
Yep I was going to say something about this but I couldn't say it without any spoilers !
Thanks Gisela ;)

#41 – I do agree that in places they sound a little similar, but overall I’m very disappointed in the new narrator. I didn’t think I’d be this way. But, he just doesn’t sound like Harry and sometimes I think I’m not even listening to a Dresden book. Indeed, his “Fuego!” sucks. He isn’t a bad narrator, but he’s not Harry.
#43 – Glad I’m not alone.
#45 – I thought he’d be older, too. Yes, JM does a great Bob. Actually, the new narrator does Bob the best of all the voices he does, I think.
#46 – Ditto! I was suspicious of Mab b/c of the weather, too. But total surprise over Uriel.
#47 – First part: Ah! Second part: Thank goodness we all know there is a Dresden book #14; I can’t imagine what I’d be like if that still wasn’t written.
#49 – Yes, she seemed quite different, but I didn’t know if it was the narrator’s deliver or what.
#50 – I don’t know. Seems like a Catch #22 here. She can’t save him, but she can be his bodyguard once he dies? **shrugs**
#54 – You were?!?! Yeah, the twins were good.
#56 – That’s what I’m thinking.

#41. Very disappointed with the narration .He wasn't a bad narrator at all but he wasn't Harry!
At first (before you told us the reason ) I thought maybe the change in narrator had been deliberate to make a difference between ghost Harry and alive Harry .
#45.Yes It's really close JM's Bob
#54. Yes ;) Because of the cover!

#41 - Yes, that is why Harry's voice is different... at least that is what I keep telling my brain.
#54 - But that's for the next book's cover... so, clever you!

#54 - But that's for the next book's cover... so, clever you!"
This book cover shows Harry with the staff on his grave so I was thinking at one point in this book he should have a staff and then Sir Stuart gave him the memory gun and I thought that's it ! If he wants to use it ,it has to be something from his memories so he'll have to imagine it as his staff.
Next book cover is something else ,I still don't know why he has a gun instead of his staff ;)

Sorry ShoSho! Work is really hectic during the first couple of weeks of the new semester :0(
Will answer Lisa Kay's questions ASAP :0)

41 - Yes, it was a great scene. I've really been enjoying Harry's backstory.
42 - Yes, they were good questions. Being a ghost has really given Harry the opportunity to look before he leaps.
I'm not sure who Harry's killer is at this point but I'm starting to worry that Kincaid really was the trigger man but who could he have been working for?
43 - I'm clueless too.
44 - Harry's guilt raises its ugly head. He is still forgetting that people have free will and they make their own choices including Molly. He is not omnipotent and is not responsible for every bad thing that happens in the world.
I don't think that Molly is any more prone to PTSD than anyone else. Her problem at this point is Lea's "teaching" methods.
45 - Wow! Bob's digs were way cool!
46 - Not surprised that Uriel has his own agenda. I am a bit confused that he and Mab may be in cahoots but I suppose that having a common goal means that they could work together.
47 - Hmm...I'm not sure of the precise connection between Justin and He Who Walks Behind. If he was Justin's mentor that means that was probably a wizard at some point but the impression that I got is that He Who Walks Behind is some sort of malevolent being or ancient evil. I think that Justin summoned He Who Walks to take kill Harry when he broke away from Justin.
I'm really interested to know how Harry will get his body back (I'm sure he will get it back somehow).
48 - Possibly. I don't think that Jack had any evil intentions - perhaps it was his job to determine if Harry is worthy of returning the land of the living.
49 - I'm a bit disappointed in the development of Murphy's character in this one. She seems to have regressed back to the skeptical Murphy of the beginning of the series - the one who wanted to arrest Harry in Fool Moon.
Harry does say that she behaved in a similar fashion when she was first transferred to SI so maybe it isn't so strange.
50 - Very interesting. Death is not something evil, it is natural and necessary. I liked the fact that Father Forthill gets his own escort to protect him from the evil forces out to get him.
51 - This was a great scene. Everyone played their part.
Daniel - I wonder if Daniel might become a Knight of the Cross at some point and take up his father's sword (he obviously needs more training though).
Butters isn't nearly the scarey-cat he used to be. I love that he is coming into his own. I'm glad the whole doctor issue was clarified. I found it strange that Butters said he wasn't a doctor and couldn't treat Morgan in Proven Guilty. Now we know he is a medical doctor but finds it difficult to treat people because he is too empathetic.
Fitz - it is poetic justice that Fitz gets to bring Baldy down. He needed to do it.
52 - It is sad but understandable. There are many baddies who could impersonate Harry and it has happened before.
53 - Wouldn't they be Vadderung's vikings - isn't Marcone simply renting them?
54 - My favorite spirit is Sir Stuart. I'm glad he's not dead dead but I worry that he is not the same as before :0(
I loved the symbolism of the gun turning onto Harry's staff and the transfer of authority from Sir Stuart to Harry.
55 - Yay!
56 - That is how I understood it. I really hope she gets over it sooner rather than later. She needs to move on and get her own life.
57 - Yikes. Evil Bob gives me the creeps.

#41.Me too ! I wish there was more of his back story. There are still holes.
#46.Yes even if they are not working together they seem to have the same goal!
#49.She's gone backward!
#51.He needs a lot of training ,he is rash and jumps in without thinking .He needs to be more like his father to take up the sword!
