Joy D | 290 comments Novel by an author who participated, as a doctor, in the Mexican Revolution, published in 1916 - it's worth reading for the historical context:

The Underdogs: A Novel of the Mexican Revolution by Mariano Azuela - 3 stars - My Review

I'm starting The Counterfeiters by André Gide (of France). I just picked up the only copy in the the city library. Translated by Dorothy Bussy.

Nocturnalux | 465 comments The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

Twi thirds into this one, it was a solid 5 rating but I felt the final portion was simply too long and could easily have been omitted altogether.

An enjoyable but flawed piece of escapism.

Thanks to society's more acute aversion to sick people being in the office, I had an extended weekend. I was able to finish The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin and the group read, Kidnapped.

I can totally see why Dispossessed was picked as a list book. More about Kidnapped in the group-read thread.

Bucket | 248 comments I just finished The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.

I love her writing! This definitely feels like a first novel (a little overt on the themes) but it's still fantastic.

So far, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is my favorite, followed by The Journey to the West, and then The Water Margin.

Maddy | 86 comments Falling Man by Don DeLillo. I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this one. I found myself focusing on and savoring the truly brilliant bits (particularly the parts with the Falling Man) and trying to move as quickly as possible through the rest of the book.

I finished I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. Amazing the things Mr. Asimov thought up. Still relevant and only somewhat anachronistic.

Finished A Question of Power by Bessie Head. I didn't like it as much as her other two books that I have read, including Collector of Treasure.

message 7783: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I just finished reading Martinus Scriblerus - a group effort probably led by Alexander Pope. At times I was going 'what!' and OMG. It dragged a little towards the end though. I'm also reading Burney's Camilla - Burney continues the theme of poking fun at intellectual nonsense with her tutor Orkborne (and perhaps her lovelorn poet?).

Bob Kaufman (bobkaufman) | 689 comments The Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Díaz del Castillo. A lengthy and at times tedious description of the conquering of New Spain by Hernando Cortes as told by one of his Conquistadors.

message 7793: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (vikkijo) | 110 comments I just finished "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt. One of the hardest books I have read in a long time. The first third was a joy, but the last two thirds were really hard to read. I finally got it at my library in audio form so I could finish the last 200 pages otherwise I would not have finished it. As it was it took me quite a long time to read because I kept putting it down and reading something else. I do think it is a brilliantly written book, it is just because when I read I become part of the book and in this book the main character just keeps trying to self destruct.

I finished A Tale of Love and Darkness by Amos Oz.

This was a very deep and dark memoir. heartbreaking and yet still light enough that I laughed a few times. A totally new Jewish perspective in my reading career. A part of history I think I should know more about.
