Fran (furansu) | 33 comments Finished The Lord of the Rings
First time reading it, I have always been afraid of it because I usually don't enjoy fantasy. I tried my best to keep an open mind while reading it but I didn't like it.

Chess Story by Stefan Zweig. A very short and easy to read piece. It didn't grab me the way some of the shorter works on the list did. But I still enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed it. It IS repetitive but I loved the mood and rhythms of the various encounters and was glad I read the full 100 chapter version.

I'm 70% through it. I'm probably going to rate it three stars also, though it has its moments.

I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy it. I think there are a few fantasy books on the list. Hopefully they won't be as long as The Lord of the Rings.

Thank you, Debbie, for posting that link. That looks like it might be a good source.

I read the Beckett poem. I don't think I even failed better to understand it.

Finished my second reading of The Cider House Rules by John Irving. It's a great book. Also a good choice for a book club if your other members don't mind a long read. So much to talk about in this book.

One of my favorite books of all time! I once went to a reading (of another book) by John Irving and he‘s so nice too.

That's one of the longest books on the list. I'll be sure to read the afterword first.

I liked it. At times it reminded me a little like a melody the way he repeated some of the words forwards and backwards. It was definitely deep the way he spoke about being sick and dying and the way people look at you when you are in a bed sick and dying like in a hospital room. And what it means to be sick and keep getting sicker until eventually you die. I don't know if that was what he was actually talking about but that's what my take away was.
