The same cannot be said for Camilo Cela who had no qualms being an informer for Franco's secret police, denouncing dissident groups and fellow intellectuals. He was also, not at all surprising, a raging homophobe.

His Boxall title was published in the 50's so there is absolutely no excuse either.

And let us not forget Gabriele d'Annunzio. Boxall has a book of his and no Elsa Morante.

@ Karen - Bowen has a few novels listed on Boxall though.

I find I have to be in the right mood to read her though."

LOL -- If I like an author, I'll read all their books. Bowen I read only when she comes up on the monthly read.

Main Street by Sinclair Lewis. Not a bad read. A little boring in spots, but I think that was the point.... the place was BORING! At least to the main character, Carol.

I have had The Last September on the back burner for nearly a year now. I know 2020 threw me and I have not been able to focus on physical books nearly the same way I have done in the past, but I have never put one aside for so long.

Last week I finished Jack Maggs by Peter Carey

I really need to read those. I've enjoyed the adaptation with Toby Jones on Radio 4.

Finished The Birds by Tarjei Vesaas, a very precious book I probably wouldn't have discovered without the list and am so glad to have read.

I also finished Oroonoko by Aphra Behn.

I just finished Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler. I liked it more than The Big Sleep. Really liking this kind of writing. And I will say it again that his use of metaphors and similes constantly awes me.

I had been really looking forward to reading this book beforehand but found it a little hit and miss, a book in which the author simply tries to show just how clever he is and ultimately disappointing.

Bob Kaufman (bobkaufman) | 689 comments Rabbit, Run by John Updike. Although the writing was well done and flowed smoothly, and the characters were solidly defined, I didn't like any of the characters, except maybe Ruth.
