Chad Huckabaa | 14 comments Reading Doctor Sleep, Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex,and Stories: All-New Tales, listening to Redshirts I have to say, as much as I like Wil Wheaton in most respects, I don't think I'd pick up another book with him as a narrator. Thinking about picking up the kindle version to finish it. Looking forward to starting The Lies of Locke Lamora. It seems like I had never heard of this author, and all of a sudden these books are coming at me from everywhere.

Jeff Namadan (jnamadan) | 218 comments Finishing up Lot Beta. Audiobook is Steelheart and next read is Boneshaker

You've gotta try Perdido Street Station and all the other Bas-Lag books. They are fantastic!

Personally I think 2-4 are much better than 5-7, but I wasn't unhappy with the last 3 books, for me it's:

1) Wizard and ..."

Rob, the overall quality of the books is so high that trying to rank them seems a bit superfluous anyway..but I agree with your ranking ..up until putting Wizard & Glass at the top spot :-) The book that really sucked me in was the drawing of the three ...So switch your 1 & 3 and we're in agreement...

I think there was a fall off in quality starting with wolves, but maybe it just because I loved wizard and glass so much and I had been waiting so long that anything was going to feel like a drop off.

message 59: by Grim (new)

Grim (grimnir) | 40 comments The lies of locke lamora is an excellent read but I didn't enjoy the sequel red seas under read skies so much. Im reading The City by Stella Gemmel it was a real page turner to begin with but seemed too turn into a chore arround the middle. just finished Deamons are forever and started Tad Williams, The Dirty streets of heaven.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments I just finished a reread of the MaddAddam trilogy.

I finished listening to Doctor Sleep yesterday. It was decent, but not spectacular. You can read my full review if you're so inclined.

I've now returned to finish listenting to the Riyria Revelations with the final omnibus: Heir of Novron.

message 62: by Derek (new)

Derek (raistlinsghost) | 81 comments I usually try the club pick and then pick one from a number of series I'm trying to finish. So Boneshaker first this month, and then Turn Coat (book 12 of The Dresden Files).

message 63: by kvon (last edited Oct 06, 2013 08:39PM) (new)

kvon | 563 comments I just finished Battle Magic which is good Tamora Pierce, but not excellent as some of hers are. I have the latest Elizabeth Moon book to read, and Up Against It for my other book club. I've read Boneshaker and don't plan to repeat it; I'm about halfway through a Demolished Man reread.

message 64: by Fredrik (last edited Oct 07, 2013 03:08AM) (new)

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments I'm going to give Boneshaker a shot, though I just a few days ago started reading Titan.
It being very serious hard SF about present day (though it was written as so near-future SF that it's now actually alternate history) space exploration, I don't expect it to be a rip-roaring action packed adventure. I may put it on hold until I've delved into Boneshaker.

I wasn't sure if you picked the Bova or the Baxter. I see you made the better choice!

Another good choice would have been Titan by John Varley.

message 67: by Clyde (new)

Clyde (wishamc) | 571 comments Just finished No Other Gods by John Koetsier. A really great first novel. I bought it because David Brin gave ita good blurb. I wasn't disappointed.

Now reading Boneshaker and The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944.

Next up: Nightmare in Pink and The Lies of Locke Lamora.

Just started Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing.

I do enjoy writing guides, once in a while. Stephen King, who I do not enjoy, wrote one of the best, On Writing. Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote one I didn’t even finish, Essays on the Art of Writing. Even though I enjoy his stories. Any suggestions for guides by speculative fiction authors?

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 1081 comments Just picked up two hours ago from Barnes and Nobles, The Republic of Thieves, so good of a book, well worth the wait, even though I only got into the series in the beginning of the year, even though I try it two years ago, and could not get into it.

message 75: by Michele (new)

Michele | 1154 comments Well, I picked up V for Vendetta with the sole purpose of reading a graphic novel, never read one before, but I think I'm going to have to get a paper version because the computer screen is defeating me.

Finished up Boneshaker, and enjoyed it more than I expected (My Review).

I will hopefully be starting The Republic of Thieves tonight with my Side Reads group assuming my copy shows up early enough.

James (ObservantRaven) | 37 comments Just started on Boneshaker today and I'm enjoying it so far :). Also currently in process of reading Hero of Ages and Lies of Locke Lamora.

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 707 comments Already read Boneshaker. In the mood for a classic, so I'm reading Anna Karenina.

message 80: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (einahpets_reads) I am reading Boneshaker and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for bookclubs this month. And then I want to start Bujold's Sharing Knife series with Beguilement. And I am also trying to get through the audiobook version of Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch and the short story collection Her Smoke Rose Up Forever. Might need to go into a hermitage at some point to make a dent in my to-read list...

And everyone talking about the Dark Tower series has me sorely tempted to abandon everything else and restart it. I only made it through The Gunslinger and then life (aka newborn baby) got in the way.

I think it might be more of the fact that The Gunslinger is the one book that King has written and will ever write that is completely different in the style and pace, but I could be wrong.

Scott M Sizer | 27 comments Inferno - just finished today...man was it a Dan Brown book
Boneshaker - for S&L (first in a while that I'm having trouble getting up for)
The Republic of Thieves
The Winter of Frankie Machine

message 83: by Ally (new)

Ally Finally got through Kushiel's Dart (very good but very dense so it took awhile). Gonna finish up Divergent and start Swordspoint

message 84: by Pamela (new)

Pamela D (funisreading) | 42 comments I just finished Boneshaker and Dead to the World. I started listening to Doomsday Book by Connie Willis last night. I am also planning on a reread of The Haunting of Hill House as a spooky Halloween read!

message 85: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 116 comments Today I finished Dead Ever After, the last book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries. The series was up and down, but it went out on a high note! Now I'm listening to Joyland on audio, my first Stephen King.

Your first!? You've been missing out. I really enjoyed Joyland though, and it's short, so not a bad choice.

David Sven (gorro) | 1582 comments Concluded Robin Hobb's Tawny man Trilogy with the Audible version of Fools Fate. Both looking forward to and simultaneously dreading Hobb's recent announcement of more Fitz and Fool books. I think this one ended well and maybe it's better to let sleeping dragons lie.
My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Started a most look forward to addition to Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories The Pagan Lord - also on Audible

Tomas Bergström | 36 comments I just finished Star Wars Scoundrels. It's a classic fun heist story. It was surprisingly good since I'm normally not a big fan of SW books.

Think Ocean's eleven in SW.

Yeah, its a good one. But certainly not indicative of King's overall bibliography

message 92: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4407 comments I'm trying to listen to The Mongoliad: Book Three, but I keep falling asleep. This might be because I'm listening while lying back in my comfortable recliner combined with my pain meds, but it's getting frustrating (especially since iOS 7 is doing doofy things with remembering my spot in books). I may have to try something else, but I want to read this while Book 2 is still fresh in my mind.

I also have Boneshaker and Steelheart on Kindle and audio...I've been slacking on starting either, though.

Yup, my first! I've wanted to read King for a long time but it just never happened. Last month I had The Stand out on eloan, but I didn't have time to read it in only 14 days. I really want to read that and The Gunslinger.

Those are the two I'd recommend. Though a lot of people don't like Dark Tower until they read The Drawing of the Three

I really love his early stuff The Shining and Salem's Lot being my favorite followed closely by The Stand. I liked Joyland but only after I gave up trying to figue out if it was horror or crime and just looked at it as a coming of age story.

message 97: by Geoff (new)

Geoff (geoffgreer) I finished Second Foundation today. My favourite of the series so far. That's all you get, I'm not much of a review writer.

Now to start Ender's Game. And then one of my unread Stephen King books. Either Thinner or Pet Sematary

JRush | 64 comments I'm about 30% into Boneshaker now. Enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I wasn't expecting to hate it but all the mediocre Goodreads reviews made me think it was going to be just ok or worse.

I've been listening to All Will Prosper by Goldmund when reading Boneshaker. Its civil warish style background music and pretty mellow.

Read Memories of Ice, which was amazing.

And my work time audiobook listening has included Dust, American Gods, Steelheart (one of my favorites of Sanderson's), and Kill Decision.

Up next will be White Night and Parasite on kindle, and Use of Weapons on audible.
