pattern must be an exact match to win
Thanks to DG's suggestion, the mirror image of the pattern will be allowed for the win. Therefore, in order to win, a team must form one of these two exact patterns.
Pattern 1:

Sandra's A: Nope you never had to complete all shelves called. However, if you had missed 3 shelves not including Free Space, you could be kicked out of the team/game, as it wasn't fair to your team-mates.
That rule will still apply, plus the game is to promote reading, and we all want to find great new books.
As those who played the last round know, I did the stats on the books chosen by everyone, and I'll be doing the same this time around.

Just curious, (I use this challenge to clean off TBR so plan on reading for each shelf call): what if all of your team agreed to skip shelves because clearly not winning shelves? So, you wouldn't be being unfair to your teammates or holding them up? I saw on signup thread a few players noting some vacation dates.

I haven't played since round 6 so excited to get back to playing :)

Yay me for being nosy! Hahahaha!

Question about Cover Love...I rarely pick a book because of the covers so I can't remember if I have any on my TBR (and I never go outside of my TBR for books in challenges.) In that case, could we just pick a book with a cover we like?

Q: D.A.—just a reader wrote: "what if all of your team agreed to skip shelves because clearly not winning shelves? So, you wouldn't be being unfair to your teammates or holding them up? I saw on signup thread a few players noting some vacation dates. "
A: If team makes a unanimous decision to skip a shelf, that wouldn't count against any one player on your team.
The goal is not to set your team back - ie: your team members are waiting for you to read and review a book. If you entire team is skipping the shelf, no one player would be holding any other back.
Q: Nairabell wrote: "Just so I have the dates straight in my head - sign ups close on Sunday 12, the game starts on Wednesday 15 and we'll be assigned teams somewhere between the two?"
A: That's right, Nairabell. Mon-Tues I'll be shuffling players into teams and posting team threads, so everyone can chat a bit before the first shelf announcement on Wednesday.
Q: D.G. wrote: "...about Cover Love...I rarely pick a book because of the covers so I can't remember if I have any on my TBR. In that case, could we just pick a book with a cover we like?"
A: Sandra wrote: "Yep D.G. To me that is the definition of Cover Love - a cover you like."
Q: Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "For the series to start shelf: does the exact book have to be on there? If only book 1 is on the shelf, can we read a later book in the series?"
A: Yes, the exact book must be on the shelf linked. This remains the case for any shelf that has a link provided w/the announcement. The book must be shelved on that exact shelf (link provided) to qualify.
Hopefully, but not necessarily the case, all the books on that shelf (series-to-start) will be book 1 since it's a series someone would like to start. But, as always, if a book is found shelved on the shelf link provided, it qualifies for the game even if it doesn't necessarily fit the shelf name. (ex: a book shelved as 'vampires' when it contains no vampires)
Q: Nairabell wrote: "Quick question about the "free4me" category - do gifts count? (birthday, Christmas, Halloween etc) How about loaned books from a friend?"
A: Absolutely. Any book you received at no cost to you qualifies for that shelf.

It was just weird not to at least have someone chanting "Shelf! Shelf! Shelf!" or signing up for the game.

No, Joanne. There are rules for the book you can choose for Free Space.
Let me look for the link...I was looking at them the other day.
ETA: Here it is. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Once the BINGO round starts with the first shelf call -- you can read your free space book at any time.
This round is the first one where the win requires a pattern other than just 5-in-a-row; but, both patterns do require the free space book for a win.

I don't think so. What I do is to search for a book I'm thinking of reading that fits the group (a series in the pnr, uf, fantasy or similar fiction genres) and if it's not there, then I add it myself (we can add books to the group bookshelf as long as they fit the group.)
Recently I've added lots of dragon books to the bookshelf. Considering that's one of the shelves, I figured we should have more dragon books.

Nope; don't have to be pnr/uf for BINGO so long as fits the shelf call -- just in order to shelve a standalone on the group bookshelves.

I'll have to check out which dragon books you added. I just checked a couple dragon themed books out on ebook.

For R12, there will be THREE winning patterns. For a team to win, the team's card must exactly match one of these patterns:

As you may have noticed, this no longer allows room for shelf skipping. Instead, as with a regular round of BSB, you will never know if a shelf could potentially lead to a win later down the line.

I'm now picturing Mr. R with a Santa hat.

ETA: I know why -- flashing back to Christmas Vacation with Eddie on diving board in a speedo (because of all the ads for Rusty Griswolds Vacation movie and too much Sims Freeplay with the little twerps boinging around diving boards). I need cookies.
