It think it makes the game fairer to have multiple patterns. With just the one patter before, some teams might get discouraged if the first few shelves called were all outside the only winning pattern on their card.

Yes Mary, that was becoming more apparent as the Rounds went on.As to Speedos - we call them Budgie Smugglers down here in Aus. And as we are in the middle of an Antarctic cold snap that is just weird to be talking about them. LOL.
We don't like skippers, so we think this is the fairest way to conduct Bingo. Every shelf is a potential winner.
I don't remember any of the previous rounds having winning teams that skipped a shelf (I could be wrong). I can remember having players behind that would drop current catch-up read for a newly called potentially winning read; but, no deliberate shelf skipping. For future rounds of BINGO I really think that in order to win you should have to be caught up on all shelves. (If a team member got booted for inactivity/behind-ness, of course, if remaining team members completed their reads then they are caught up for the shelves even without the departing member's reads.)
That single pattern -- whew -- that would have been incredibly frustrating for the teams not having called shelf in any of the only nine potentially winning positions.
I asked several times about skipping shelves this time not because I wanted to or liked it. But, because until more patterns were added it seemed like someone could have skipped and still won while other teams were still floundering around reading the called shelves.
(last round I played our team carried on until last shelf call had several teams racing to the win -- but, honestly, we'd gotten frustrated and given up completely on the possibility of winning because--if I remember correctly-- before we could get even three in a row everyone else had three in a row and lots of teams had four in a row with several teams having multiple four in a rows. It was getting painfully funny how often a shelf call skirted right around our 3-in-a-row possibilities. Another team was in same straits. Towards end our team (1 in round 9) and team 9 were eerily just collecting 3-in-a-rows right and left. Can only imagine how much worse if had to have just 9 positions instead of 5-in-any-direction. I know it's more about the reading than the winning, but you need at least the possibility of winning or it's not exactly a challenge/game to play as a team.)
Oops! Now no one will want to be on my team because will think I'm unlucky for shelf calls :)But that was just one round; and it was really getting almost hilarious how very clearly we were not any where near the win. The other team in same boat and ourselves even posted commiserations on each others threads a few times.
And I do keep up my reads at least ...
I'm going to have to re-read the instructions and look at past games and shelves to make sure I've got this game right in my head :)
It's much easier to play than it sounds Carmen. I don't think we've ever had a team skip a shelf in previous rounds, just the odd player who either overcommits to challenges/reviews or real life dramas no one could forsee.
Either way, now that the notion has been brought up, we needed to address it. So with the new patterns, every shelf is a potential winner.
And Mary, there is always the library.

Haha, now I have an extremely unnerving image of St. Nick himself in red speedos trimmed in white fur to match his hat... Christmas in July, lol

Budgie smugglers! Absolutely love it! I am using that from now on =)
LOL! Odd turn this convo has taken. I was going to post a funny Santa-in-a-speedo pic, but wow! Google it, there's no shortage of pics.
Well it looked like most of them were for charity, at least. I'm positive its NOT a good look for most of them!
Oh yeah that's where I get my books. I am just really out of touch with new releases. I think I actually have one though. I know I checked out First Frost by Sarah Addison Allison but I have no memory of putting it on ITUNEs (use a different computer for that)
Teams! Teams! Teams! and while waiting a little movie clip from my head:

I'm not sure if dinghy t-shirt made it better or worse...

Team shuffle & card creation in progress.I hope to have team threads up within the next hr or so. :D
Please wait until I've made 6 posts to each team thread before you start chatting. Thanks!
Do we need to do a Team Shuffle dance to help you along? It's like the Superbowl Shuffle, only less graceful!

Ok, all team threads are up. If you notice anything wonky with your bingo card (multiple shelves with same name, wrong team #, etc) please let me know. Our first shelf announcement will be 1p PST Wednesday! Until then, chat with your teammies, get your free space book picked out and, as always, don't hesitate to ask any questions throughout the game.
Welcome to R12, ladies!

Thank you! I looked at teams first and was trying to figure out where you wanted me. I will go check in.
Team 9 will be known as Donkey Punchin Kangaroos lolAnd I'll be the leader of this establishment oh awesome bingo ninjas =]
:D Great names, ladies! Continue to keep us posted as you choose your team name and team captain. One of us will updated your thread with that info. Thanks! Also, because I'm sad whenever someone interested misses out on a round of BSB, I've created a thread where you can sign up for a PM whenever a new round is about to begin and a sign-up thread is open. You can do that here , if you're interested.
Are all the teams this round the exact same number of members? If not , I wouldn't object if the "missed this signup" people got added to even things up since game actually hasn't started yet with zero shelves being called.I think there are four people who saild could backup or replace or regretted missing cutoff -- could they get added as a team?
Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "Hey does a skull count as a person for the "no people" cover shelf?"Whoops, sorry, Mary, missed your question initially. Hmmm, I'm going to have to say no it would not count because it's a person's skull and the shelf is "missing persons".
D.A.—just a reader wrote: "Are all the teams this round the exact same number of members? But, if one person would like to remain on the standby list and four others would like to play, we'd be open to creating a 15th 4-player team for those who missed initial signups. :)
Shelf!! shelf!!Bad thing about working overnight is I want shelf to be called at 3am not 3pm for my time zone.
Team 1 is the Book Oneders. ... and I just noticed someone's already made the change on the thread title. Those Ninjas are quick!
Margaritas! Margaritas! Margaritas! ... Tequila Shots! One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, FLOOR. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, SHELF...
While we're all waiting patiently, or not so patiently as the case may be, for the first shelf call, I thought I'd take a moment for a PSA.As you finish your book & review and post it in your team thread, please take an extra moment to check and see if the title is on our group shelves. If not, please add it. That way we can continue to grow the pool for future rounds of BBS. Thank you.
Oh, and ...
SHELF! (guess which list I'm on)
