The French used is Cajun French and not "Paris" French. That could be some of the problem?

message 604: by Lynda (new)

Lynda I read Vampire Kisses one and am reading two. Like them so far. Am very upset about Annotated Sherlock Holmes. Bought used from online. Not as advertised. Will probably wait to read till I get correct edition.

message 605: by Anne (new)

Anne Reading Dreamfever (Fever Series #4) by Karen Moning as soon as I finish up The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan . I just bought The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan to read to my kids, and I want to stay one step ahead of their questions about the series!

message 606: by Theresa (last edited Oct 27, 2009 07:05AM) (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) Finishing up with Fire by Kristin Cashore this morning (IT IS AN AWESOME BOOK!!!) and then I'm starting Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. I've had Child 44 on my bookshelf for over a year now so I figured it was time to dust it off (literally) and start it.

Also listening to Jaws by Peter Benchley on audiobook on my way to/from work. The author did/does an incredible job of capturing a "vacation" town in crisis and a marriage in crisis. It was hard to turn off my car this morning to come in to work!

message 607: by Christy (new)

Christy | 19 comments I'm a little more than halfway through Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. I really like it and already have the next book in the series.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Anne, are you liking Percy? I bought the first recently but haven't read it yet.

Anne Michelle M. wrote: "Anne, are you liking Percy? I bought the first recently but haven't read it yet."

Yeah, I like the the books. They are definitely kids books, but they have a good plot, so they're easy to stay interested in.

message 610: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments I finished The Winds of Marble Arch yesterday. It's very, very good.

Then I read the novellas by Charlaine Harris & Ilona Andrews in Must Love Hellhounds. The Harris novella was about two bodyguards on a parallel world named Clovache and Batanya, that I didn't recognize, but was fine. The Andrews story was about Andrea and Raphael. I liked reading more about them. I looked at the novellas by Nalinia Singh and Meljean Brook and they didn't sing to me, so I didn't read them.

Now I'm reading and loving A Kiss Before the Apocalypse by Thomas E. Sniegoski.

Hopefully I will het to Gil's All Fright Diner by the end of the month.

It seems to me that Clovache & Batanya appeared in one of the Sookie books, but I can't remember which one. Or maybe they were in another of her short stories. I'm so glad you're enjoying
A Kiss Before the Apocalypse (Remy Chandler, #1) by Thomas E. Sniegoski ! It's one of my favorite reads this year!

You're still reading the "good" Anita books! I liked BLOODY BONES.

Susan (Suz) (sharney) Anne wrote: "Melodie, I still really like this series...I've heard that it seriously plummets at some point. Too bad. Why? "

I know you directed this to Melodie, but I thought I"d give my .02 too ;) I wouldn't necessarily say they plummet, I just think some of them go in a very weird direction. Some of them take her away from all her men which makes me sad cuz I love her men, and then some of them are the exact opposite and are nothing but her men and take her away from her work as an animator or working with the police. LKH for some reason abondonded the happy medium. But I still love the series as a whole, even tho I'm just over halfway through.....

message 621: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) Well hells bells Michelle, what in the world was From Dead to Worse about LOL, LOL?? Gosh my memory sucks it really hasn't been THAT long since I read either of those books... **hangs head in shame**

message 622: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments From Dead to Worse was right after with the de Castro takeover.

I'm fanatical. Don't blame your memory.

message 623: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) Anne wrote: "Melodie, I still really like this series...I've heard that it seriously plummets at some point. Too bad. Why? "

When the "ardeur" takes front & center stage, the books start going to s**t, IMHO. The series hangs together for a book or 2, but then..........I don't know. When you have difficulty finding the plot because Anita's getting her freak on, upside down, inside out and sideways it gets boring.

message 624: by Anne (new)

Anne Thanks Susan and Melodie! So far the books have little to no sex in them...certainly not with Anita involved! LOL! I was beginning to wonder why some people had them listed as paranormal "romance". I hate the idea that the plots are going to lose their meaty quality, though. Hmmm.
I'm halfway through with Bloody Bones (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #5) by Laurell K. Hamilton right now. I really like it!

Elvia (elvb) Anne wrote: "Thanks Susan and Melodie! So far the books have little to no sex in them...certainly not with Anita involved! LOL! I was beginning to wonder why some people had them listed as paranormal "romance"...."

Bloody Bones was one of the great ones.
I am still a big fan of Anita. In the most recent one she gets a little back to her roots. :)

Anne, I'm also sorry to say I may have to give up on Good Omens for awhile. I have other books I KNOW will hold my interest. I'm going to give it till Monday. If I can't finish it I'll try again in a few months! lol

message 626: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Anne, I am reading Anita right now too. I've read the first six in seven days and am currently reading Burnt Offerings, which is number 7. I've been completely sucked in and I can't even tell you why. I'm getting grumpy with my family when they interrupt my reading! Shame on me! I can't seem to put the books down. They aren't amazing, but I just have to keep seeing what is going to happen. I have to say, I am VERY impressed with how well she writes with a million new characters each book. I find some authors write in too many characters and I get distracted trying to keep everyone straight, but I don't have that problem with these books at all.

I just ordered Graceling from the library and am very excited. It looks great.

message 630: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Picard (michellepicard) | 42 comments I just finished Frostbitten by Kelly Armstrong. It's a strong book, like all of hers. I don't think she's my favorite author or the most emotionally impactful of the UF crew, but there's something very solid about all of her books. Her characters are very real, not too dark and angsty, although I love that kind of book as well. Very balanced, but quirky enough to be appealing.

And although I am disappointed by the way Laurell K. Hamilton's books have gone, I still find myself needing to pick up the next and am planning a trip to the bookstore tomorrow for the next Merry Gentry book. The first two of that series were the strongest and helped inspire me to start writing. Not because of her craft ability, but just because of how interesting it was to mix fae and contemporary settings.

I just picked up my copy of Club Dead by Charlaine Harris and so far it's really good. I'm also reading Insomnia by Stephen King, if anyone has read it how did you like it?

message 632: by Anne (new)

Anne Elvia, I'm sorry Good Omens isn't doing it for ya. I finished Bloody Bones (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #5)and realy liked it! Can't wait to get to the next one!
Melissa, I think I'm one or two books behind you! I can't stop reading them, either!
Levi, Club Dead is one of my favorite Sookie books! Enjoy!

message 633: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 18 comments I just found the Black Dagger Brotherhood (J.R. Ward) a month or so ago and I am hooked. I've never been a big romance novel kid of girl.... they just mostly felt trashy not well developed no story line etc....Well OMG not the BDB, the world is amazing and the characters feel so real, the story lines failry complex. I do have to say that I'm no prude but the sex scenes are well... hot... *blushing* that took some getting used to. In any case wondering if anyone else has/is reading them and like them as much as i do? I think i could become fanatical with these, hmmmmmmm.....

message 634: by Elvia (new)

Elvia (elvb) OMg I'm so excited. I am at the library right now and they have Dreamfever waiting for me!!! I can't wait to get it started. I just started Stargazer this morning though. I'll finish that and maybe get some more Gaiman in before starting Dreamfever....or not. I have a feeling I'll just dive right in after Stargazer. lol

message 635: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Dawn, join the Paranormal Romance group. There are tons of people on there just as obsessed with the BDB as you are! (I'm in it, so you can access it from my profile page if you like.) I've only read the first one so far, but I really liked V and Butch. Happy reading!

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 109 comments I am trying to read Ill Wind, but can't seem to get into it. Has anybody here read this series? I really love Rachel Caine's YA series the Morganville Vampires, so I thought I'd give her adult series a shot. Michelle,

Thanks for the tip, I joined. I was surprised to see so many of the books I like being discussed, I hadn't necessarily considered them primary romance novels. I don't get the whole classification thing anyway so I suppose i shouldn't be surprised.... Thanks again.

Anne I finishedHalfway to the Grave yesterday. It was as great as I thought it would be!
Starting A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry, #1) (can't wait!) as soon as I finish up Jane Eyre. I've only got about 100 pages of Jane left, so I shoud be able to get started on my first Meredith Gentry book soon. I've been feeling a little left out!

Dawn, there is a fine line between Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Romance, for me the difference is whether or not the romance part of the book gets a HEA (happily ever after) or if you are left hanging in the romance dept until the next book in the series.

UF's build up the sexual tension and chase over many books in the series, until you are like "would you just do it already!!!" LOL. You will also notice that a lot of the PNR series have different main characters in each book (like the BDB) because the author gives each character a HEA in their book.

But like I said, there is a fine line between the 2 genres, and you will find both being discussed in UF & PNR groups.

Laura,

Thanks for the AHHHHHHAAAAAA moment. Your explanation was great- I think i get it now *no longer scratching head* it actually makes sense to me. I might just go evaluate my entire library just to prove to myself I can!

message 646: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Dawn, Laura's description is how I generally differentiate between the two, since there are several series that touch that romance/paranormal thriller line.

UF doesn't always have a strong romantic element. Jim Butcher and Simon R. Green are good examples of UF without the sexy edge.

message 647: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Picard (michellepicard) | 42 comments Michelle, you're right about some UF not having strong romantic elements. However, I find Harry Dresden a very romantic character who cares a lot about relationships. Yes, the books do not focus significantly on his romantic relationships, but what is there is done so well and so subtly, I adore it. He's such a great guy because we read about his emotional investment in all the other characters he values, like his brother. That makes him sexier. Sorry (LOL), I'm a little fixated on Harry.

message 648: by Anne (new)

Anne Michelle, you are not the only one out there who has a teeny tiny crush on Harry! I love all of the Dresdin Files! I can't wait until the next one FINALLY comes out!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 237 comments I have a crush on Harry too. :)

message 650: by Anne (new)

Anne He always portrays himself as a long lanky goofball, but I'm betting he's a hottie! His self-depricating humor just makes Harry all the more yummy to me!
