I understand your point, I inferred that since you gave it four stars it was worth your time, not time wasted, and THAT is enjoyable. ;0)

Chrissie When I picked this one up I was hesitant. I ended up really liking The Painted Veil.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Greg, this one we both liked! Nice.

message 10505: by Albert (new)

Albert I just recently finished Stoner, which I had been looking forward to for a long time. Sometimes it doesn't work out the way you hope, as we all know, but this time it did. It was a joy to read, and I found myself thinking about it days later. It is exciting that I have more of John Williams to read but sad that he wrote so little.

Amit Siovitz | 11 comments Recently read Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett and, just like with most of Pratchett's work, loved it. So cleverly constructed, the man was a genius

I absolutely loved 'Stoner' when I read it a while back, still have fond thoughts of it even now - wonderful that it was rediscovered and published again. Found a copy in a secondhand shop when I was away at New Year and bought it just so I had a copy to keep and maybe re-read - a great compliment for any book as I rarely re-read anything, got too much new stuff to read!

I was impressed by this book too Luffy -- it was even better than the very good film version!

Chrissie, I gave this five stars, although I only gave 3 stars to Of Human Bondage, which I read after.

Chrissie Alice, I could only manage to give Of Human Bondage two stars; It was OK, but not more.

That title is also shared by a great song by Jimmy Webb, recorded by Joe Cocker and Glen Campbell!

PattyMacDotComma I finished - GASP! - Aussie author Steve Toltz's enormous book A Fraction of the Whole.

Great writing (short list for 2008 Man Booker Prize) , but by golly it's long. I did include a lot of quotes so you can see what a good writer he is.

Alice Mc I have just read The Outrun by Amy Liptrot, about a woman overcoming her alcohol addiction on the islands of Orkney. It has a lot of great reviews and won the Wainwright prize so I was looking forward to it. But although I loved the setting I found it a bit "wordy" and it just didn't capture me, so I only gave it 2 stars in the end.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I've just finished my second — and last — Menna Van Praag, The Dress Shop of Dreams. The author has created a unique setting for her books, a magical realism version of Cambridge, but her books never live up to their promise, or pretty covers.

PattyMacDotComma TASMANIA - what a story!
I just finished Aussie author: Saroo Brierley's memoir, now a new film called LION, A Long Way Home.

A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley Lion (Movie tie-in edition) by Saroo Brierley

A five-year old Indian boy's memory beats ours, for sure, and it's not just the fresh Tasmanian air of his adopted country that did it.

I think maybe one may appreciate it more as you get older.
