I like all sorts of mysteries but my favorites are the so-called Golden Age (like Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers, Michael Innes, Margery Allingham, Edmund Crispin, Rex Stout, etc.) and historical fiction mysteries (Bruce Alexander, Kate Ross, Elizabeth Peters, etc). I have also been enjoying the contemporary police procedurals by Louise Penny and Andrea Camilleri.

Here is a pretty good list of "best" mysteries you could use to explore: http://www.listchallenges.com/the-top...

Gill | 5719 comments I've just finished reading the latest novel by Margaret Drabble. It's as good as her best earlier ones.

Here's my review of The Dark Flood Rises:

Wow! Thanks so much. I've read Agatha Christie before so I look forward to reading more by her and discovering new ones!

PattyMacDotComma 3.5★ for Friday Brown by Aussie author Vikki Wakefield, who's painted a scary picture of life on the streets when a teen is at loose ends.

It's a YA for older kids, since there is death and conflict.

It was more suspense/thriller than mystery, I think, although I shelve them together.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've finished The Happy Prince and Other Tales - 4 stars. While The Happy Prince and The Selfish Giant are sweet children's stories, The Nightingale and the Rose has a tongue-in-cheek ending, and The Devoted Friend and The Remarkable Rocket are apparent satires.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a disappointing sci fi thriller called Infinity Lost - 2*. At least I didn't pay for it!

PattyMacDotComma I never imagined a dull political campaign could be made so entertaining. (I included a good anecdote, which shames but does not name an influential lady woman who should have known better!)

Of course, it helps if you like Aussie politics, and if you do, I highly recommend What a Time to be Alive, about the 2016 campaign from BuzzFeed journalist Mark Di Stefano, who was given short shrift and condescension from the 'suits' in Government. They should be more careful whom they offend.

4.5★ from me!

PattyMacDotComma The Baker's Dozen: A Saint Nicholas Tale was first published in 1995, then this 15th anniversary edition came out in 2010. Gorgeous illustrations that kids will have fun discovering details in. Nice gift for Christmas.

dely | 5214 comments I have finished The Dance of Siva: Essays on Indian Art and Culture 3/5

This book has a few essays about Indian culture and society. It surely has been important when it has been written, in the first years of the 20th century, so that people could know and understand better Hindu deities, their symbolism, or Indian music, art, dance, etc. I've already read a lot about India and Hinduism so this book didn't add a lot to what I already knew, but I can see that in the time it has been written it surely was important.

PattyMacDotComma Pulitzer prizewinner, beautiful writing, overlapping stories of boys and men over several generations.

Paul Harding's Tinkers is short, well worth a read for the language and poetry and mood, but I missed something, I guess, and am too dim to put my finger on it.

PattyMacDotComma 3.5★ for L.J. Ross's fourth book in the series Angel: A DCI Ryan Mystery.

Bodies of red-heads appear in graveyards, but somebody has sneaked them in, and nobody knows why or how. And one of our favourite coppers is a lovely redhead!
