DHASG August Challenge

Introduction: In August, the heat is still on! People are squeezing in as much summer fun as they can before it's back to the fall schedule. Kids start going back to school this month, and the summer movie season starts to dry up. The eighth month of the year is here and let's celebrate it with the next monthly challenge on the DHASG.

Instructions:

1. Books must be read between August 1st and August 31st of the month.
2. Please post on this thread that you are signing up and update your stats as you finish. Let the moderator know when you are completed in your final post.
3. A book can only be used once in the challenge.
4. Books of any genre can be used for the challenge, unless a particular part of the challenge states otherwise.
5. Do enjoy your last full month of summer reading!

Levels:
1. August Personage: Read 8-10 books
2. Hot Summer Nights!: Read 5-7 books
3. Lazy Summer Days!: Read 3-4 books

1. Hell on Wheels!: Since the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally takes place in the first full week of the month of August, read a book that features a motorcycle-riding protagonist or main character(s).
2.Eight is Enough!: August being the eighth month of the year, read a book to represent eight in some way: eight letters in the title, author name(s) has eight letters. You could even read the eighth book in a series, published by an author, or in your tbr pile (ereader or on your shelf). If you can find another way to represent eight, knock yourself out.
3.Last Holler: Since summer is starting to wind down this month, with school getting ready to start back up, and vacation time coming to an end, read a book about characters who are having a last hurrah before embarking on a big event or obligation in their life. You can choose what event and circumstance.
4.Stargazing: The peak of the Perseid meteor shower occurs this month. So to celebrate, read a science fiction novel, sci-fi romance, or a book with a main character who is a star/celebrity.
5.Virgo: Other than Leo, the other Zodiac sign for August is Virgo. Virgos are analytical, observant, precise, helpful and reliable as positive traits. Their more negative traits are skepticism, fastidiousness, inflexibility, the tendency to interfere, and emotional coldness. Virgos tend to live in their minds. Read a book with a character with any of the above traits. You could also read a book with a main character who is a virgin.
6. Onyx: One of the birthstones for August is Onyx. In Latin or Greek, it means claw or fingernail. It is a banded stone that has layers of a variety of colors, except blue or purple, but commonly black and white. Onyx is used to make jewelry. It symbolizes eloquence and is the stone for the 7th and 10th wedding anniversaries. Onyx was well-known in Greek and Roman cultures. Read a book with a black cover, or with a variety of colors except blue or purple, or a werewolf or shifter main character (has claws). You could read a book with an eloquent main character or by a very good writer, or even a book set in either Ancient or present Greek or Rome, or a main character who has been married for several years.
7.World Tour: Since folks go on vacation in the summer, and there are several holidays in various parts of the globe (such as India, Ireland, Scotland, Singapore, and Jamaica), read a book in which the characters travel to two or more countries (excluding origin and return point of the same).
8.Listen Up!: August is Audio Appreciation Month, so listen to any audiobook, and it will count for this part of the challenge.
9.Sister's Day: August 1st is the day for observance of Sister appreciation. Read a book with a character who has or is a sister, or read one of your sister's favorite authors or books. If you're a sister, you can read any book you choose this month.
10.Pick your celebrity: These celebrity/famous people were born in August. Five presidents: Bill Clinton, Benjamin Harrison, Herbert Hoover, Lyndon Johnson, Barack Obama; Several actors and actresses: Lucille Ball, Halle Berry, Sean Connery, Cameron Diaz, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Patrick Swayze; Singers: Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, LeAnn Rimes, James Taylor Read a book that represents one of the folks on this list, either by name or some association you can think of (please indicate which you used in your stats).

Hope you enjoy the challenge and happy reading month in August!

1. Hell on Wheels!: Since the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally takes place in the first full week of the month of August, read a book that features a motorcycle-riding protagonist or main character(s).

Undeniable (Undeniable, #1) by Madeline Sheehan I would give this one a big, fat MEH!

Oh well, onto the next book in the challenge.

Kim | 134 comments Status update 3-ish/5-7

1. Hell on Wheels!: Undeniable (Undeniable, #1) by Madeline Sheehan I give this one 2 out of 5 stars.

5.Virgo: Playing for Keeps (A Neighbor from Hell, #1) by R.L. Mathewson Cute book. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

6. Onyx: I ended up changing the book I picked out for this number. My sister has been bugging me for two years to read this one so I finally did. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

9.Sister's Day: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen This book is the reason I've only read three books. I've been reading this, or trying anyway, for over two weeks. I finally made it 13% of the way in before I gave up. I just cannot get into it at all!! I am officially moving on to something else, but I don't know what yet.

Kim | 134 comments I ended up completing 5 total, including the three mentioned above.

8.Listen Up!: I listened to Cell on a recent road trip. SK's writing style never irritated me when reading, but it bothered me more to listen to it. I also didn't care for the ending so I give it 2/5.

9.Sister's Day: If you're a sister, you can read any book you choose this month. I chose Rock Chick. Unfortunately I liked it so much that I continued reading the series instead of reading books from the challenge. :o
