Diane wrote: "The Man Who Loved Children by Christina Stead."I hear a lot of different things about that one. Nothing that's put it high on my list of things-I-must-get-to-sooner-rather-than-later though
Diane wrote: "The Child in Time by Ian McEwan."I want to read that book soon. Please let us know what you think of it when you finish.
As for myself, I just started Rebecca.
It has happened.
The day has come.
This afternoon I embarked on the epic journey that is In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust.

After a failed attempt to like Shuggie Bain, I grabbed another Booker Price winner, which is on the list and thus I can be sure I will like it. Troubles by J.G. Farrell. Unfortunately, I found only the first two books of the trilogy.

Happy reading! Now, in order to immerse yourself in Vol. 1, you need lime blossom tea (actually quite healthy and available on Amazon) and madeleines.

I think that's a great Idea. I have madeleines. But they are so good with coffee they will be gone by the time my tea arrives.

Even aside from racism, she deals with unpleasant aspects of human nature. Might want to buckle up before going in.
Diane wrote: "Starting Melmoth the Wanderer by Charles Robert Maturin."That book seems kind of flawed to me, but I did like it. It's gets a little long in the middle though
James wrote: "Another monster started: Kristen Lavransdatter by Sigrid Unset"I thought that was an outstanding piece of historical fiction--you have to pay attention to the characters, because they all seem to come back later at some point or another, but overall, I really enjoyed reading that.

Welcome Leigh! Hope to see your post in the group read.
I also just started Red Harvest.
Along with The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andrić

I loved The Bridge on the Drina. A little harsh (pointed, even), to start with, but that's the extent of that particular gruesomeness.
I finished all my reading goals for the month of November, so I looked around for the shortest book I had that was on the list, and came up with The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Looks like something I might be able to read in a day.

Love Murdoch, but haven't read this one."
I think it's her masterpiece.

I loved it. The best Murdoch I've read, so far.

Peter wrote: "Starting A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. This may take a while."Did you hear they made a dramatization of it?
About a week ago I started The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano (from Chile but set mostly in Mexico), and started The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann (Germany, almost 900 pgs) a few days ago and today started Small Island by Andrea Levy (U. K.).

Yes I actually watched it.

Lucky you (I hope)! Hoping it gets across the pond.
It is across the pond. Acorn.TV (or Britbox on Prime) starting airing it Monday with the first two episodes of six. Remainder will be available on subsequent Monday’s.

I started King Solomon’s Mine by H. Rider Haggart. I have a feeling I’m not going to enjoy this one.
Karina wrote: "I started King Solomon’s Mine by H. Rider Haggart. I have a feeling I’m not going to enjoy this one."I found it so, so, so intensely racist that it was hard to get through. And I was very young when I read it, still it was bogglingly awful in its depiction of anyone not WASP. I expect I'd react even more negatively if I were to read it now.
