James Spencer (jspencer78) | 260 comments For those on the edge of whether to take on ASB, I recommend it highly. It is not a difficult read, just long and it was one of those books that IMHO I was really glad was so long as I enjoyed every page of it. It will take a little more time than usual but hey, what difference does that make.

@Angie, some of us are thinking of January 2021 to read A Suitable Boy. Would you like to start a thread here? I’ve calculated that it will take approximately 3-4 months to read this book. 1474 pages, 477 Chapters (191 Parts).

Thanks @James for the encouragement.

Hopefully they have a good renewal policy. It's a long one.

message 4659: by Alice (new)

Alice Yoder | 468 comments @Sean, I had to run over the library website to see the renewal policy. Check out for three weeks, renew twice, which makes a total of nine weeks. The library is close enough that I can run by to check the book back in and re-check out. However, a call will probably do as well since they know me.

Frances (francesperez) | 32 comments Moby-Dick. I found the language a bit difficult at first. But I'm just going to plough through and read between the lines.

message 4662: by Nocturnalux (new)

Nocturnalux | 465 comments I haven't actually started it but I just picked up 海辺のカフカ〈上〉 after a long hiatus. That'd be the first volume of Kafka on the Shore, my Japanese edition comes in two volumes.
Hopefully I will finish it before the year is done.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments I've never read anything by Ellis, but the thought of reading anything by him has no appeal for me. Same with that entire crowd from the 80's, like Jay McInerney and others. I didn't really like the 80's when they were happening, and I've little urge to go back and revisit.

ETA: Come back and let us know if you were pleasantly surprised--it might give me enough of a push to read this someday

I liked it a lot. I know it's very well known book, but I didn't know that much about the story and I haven't seen any movies, so it was nice surprise to me.

Good luck! I dread trying that.

message 4682: by Alice (new)

Alice Yoder | 468 comments @Kirsten: I'm 200 pages in.....don't know what to think yet. I checked it out at the library and told them I'd be renewing two more times (a total of 9 weeks). I'm pacing myself.

I do like to read an "epic" while reading a normal-sized (page-wise) book.
