Carol wrote: "I will be interested to see what you think of it. It's very different."Very much so. I've leafed through it and it does seem quite an unusual take on narrative.
Nightwood by Djuna Barnes.
I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while.
Diane wrote: "Great Apes by Will Self."Oh? I've heard him on BBC Radio. He has a good sense of humor.
Diane wrote: "Middlemarch by George Eliot."Ha--I'm starting that as well. I bet you'll finish a lot sooner than I do though.
I was browsing the library and Smiley's People caught my eye. So today I started Book 1 in the trilogy: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carré.
Gayle wrote: "I just started Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively. 20 pages in and enjoying it. Hope it continues."
It‘s not on the list though.

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. I usually like to read all scary books in October, so it will probably be my last non horror read for awhile:).
Sean wrote: "This weekend I started The Drowned and the Saved by Primo Levi."Sean, have you read his 'If This is a Man'? If not, I strongly recommend reading it first. The Drowned makes several references to If and makes a greater impact when seen in contrast to it.
I did. I just finished it. I read them back to back. My edition was called Survival in Auschwitz. And it's a huge contrast. Such a difference in style. 40 years really put some perspective on the horrific event.

My copy did not include The Truce. I will probably read that as well, I'm finding this very informative and interesting and sad.

Angie wrote: "I just started One Hundred Years of Solitude."I loved this book! The way the family's history tangles with that of the place was really cool.
I have just started Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China. I'm also halfway through Treasure Island right now. I'm enjoying both, but they're very different books so I'm currently alternating between them as the mood strikes.
Sean wrote: "The Book of Disquiet: The Complete Edition by Fernando Pessoa"I read that recently--at least the Penguin edition of it. I found I couldn't read more than about ten passages a day. It probably would have been better for me to read one passage a day, like a meditation book. I never could quite come round to Pessoa's viewpoint on life, but there were some interesting comments here and there.

It's quite out there. Some of them are very short, but I am seeing what you mean. I do find them interesting for the most part. Still trying to make some overall sense of the work. Not sure that's gonna happen...

I'm starting The Pilgrim's Progress today. That leaves 24 pre-1970 books for me to read next year. I'd like to clear that category!
