What Are You Currently Reading? (doesn't have to be an Aussie book)

It's a difficult one Dale. I do really like the story line but it's the way it's written, it's complicated and exhausting and is taking the all fun out of reading it.

That's true. You definitely can't skim with this book

No. I wasn't really sure what I felt about Cloudstreet when I read it. I eventually gave it three stars which to me means a fairly average read. I have read two of his books now and am not hanging out to read any more!

I have just finished The Shadow Rising! It has taken me two months at 45 minutes a day on audiobook while walking my dog. I have really enjoyed it but 1006 pages....40 hours of listening time. Phew! And that was book 4 of the series. Tomorrow I start book 5 which is a mere 36 hours. And there are 14 books in the series.

Yeah, I don't blame you.
This will be the one and only one I'll read of his. I'm not keen on working hard to be able comprehend a book
Time for one more book before challenges start on 1st September so I downloaded the next in the Dresden Files series Cold Days. It cost $18 for the kindle version. Sometimes I hate Amazon.

Wow that is SO expensive Phrynne!!
Wow that is SO expensive Phrynne!!

More expensive than a paperback.
But this was one of those occasions when kindle has the edge. I really wanted to read that book (it is number 14 in the series) and I really wanted to start it last night. The paperback is about $6 but it was also about two weeks away by online order!

Never mind, the previous specials and good deals you managed to get have made up for this one;)

Wow, it's so nice to find some other Aussies who really did not like Cloudstreet, I was beginning to feel like a pariah, as everyone else seemed to love it! It was the first Tim Winton book I read, and it took me a few years to try his books again - and now Dirt Music and Breath have prominent places on my favourites shelf, and I name him as my favourite Aussie author! Let me assure you, I have little to no interest in surfing, but I didn't need that to love Breath - the writing is so good and the characters so interesting. Anyway, if you can bear to give Tim Winton another go someday, I highly recommend these two books - nowhere near as difficult to wade through as Cloudstreet.

A word to the wise: I am up to Book 10 of Wheel of Time, and I have to warn you that Books 6, 7 and 8 require some dedication to get through, as the pace slows down a lot. This is not just my opinion but the general consensus among WoT fans - some even say that the lull occurs in Books 5 to 9 or anywhere within those parameters. However, apparently the pace picks up again in the later books, which everyone seems to love. For me, Book 9 was much more enjoyable than the previous three, and left me seriously looking forward to reading Book 10.

How can you keep reading the series if you're not really enjoying it Sally?

Just added Quiet to my TBR list, definitely sounds like my kind of book - I am certainly a card-carrying introvert.

I also loved Breath, couldn't put it down, but have had difficulty moving on past the opening with some other books by the same authour. Perhaps I just need to be in the right mood.

I have this one lined up to read next. Would love to know what you think.

Am reading this the second time in a few years, and I like it much more than the first time - should be done with it by tonight!

That's a good question! When I said those books were rather slower than the others, I only meant compared with the earlier ones, I didn't mean they were really BAD. And I was completely captivated by the early books, so when you look at it that way, it's by no means a bad comparison. To paraphrase what I've read in some reviews, the myriad intricate plots in the series mean that by Book 6, Jordan had quite a few authorial debts to pay off, a lot of questions that had to be answered, and I can see now that he was also setting the scene for what would come later. So the story in those slower books becomes much more a battle of minds - against other minds or against the characters' own inner demons. The first five books were unputdownable because of the pace of the action but the story couldn't progress like that through the whole series. To put them in movie terms, the first five books are comprised mostly of high speed car chases and the next three are mostly interior monologues, LOL.
And there is one more major reason why I couldn't give up on the series when it became less exciting - by Book 6, I really cared about the characters and wanted to find out what happens to them. It's fairly rare to find good characterisation in a fantasy series, and in WoT there is a plethora of characters that you really come to love.
And last but not least, I had friends who had read the whole series telling me to hang in there because it gets heaps better, LOL.
Thanks Sally for your wonderful and full explanation! It sounds like a really enjoyable series...
You said it all Sally! I have just started Book 5 and can't wait to find out what is happening to all the characters. There are so many stories running simultaneously and so many really likeable characters. Unfortunately, because I am listening to it and not reading it I cannot spell any of their names!

Haha, the funny thing about reading the names and not hearing them is trying to figure out what they sound like. I read the whole first book only to find it had a glossary at the back that helped with pronunciation, and realised I had got most of them wrong - especially Nynaeve and Egwene and Moiraine. Was difficult re-learning them for the next book!

Thanks Sally. My original choice was actually Breath as my first Tim Winton book, but then I met a lady in the bookshop; we got talking and she persuaded me to buy/read Cloudstreet instead.
You never know. I say now that I won’t read another one of his books but I’ve been know to change my mind. And if I do it will definitely be Breath. :)

The parents of this kid decided not to reveal the kid's gender to the society for as far as possible - and were rewarded with not just stern consternation by certain factions of the society, but death threats as well.
EDIT: - http://www.gendercentre.org.au/resour... - Such a beautiful, relevant story. I can imagine how the parents would have raised the kid.
