Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) This is for players to have a place to reserve posts for updates since the other thread turned into a discussion thread.

I would still like people to post when they finish a book in the finished thread. That will just make it easier for me to place books where they need to go when they're done.

DON'T BE DISCOURAGED IF YOU FINISH A BOOK AND YOU THINK IT'S ONLY CATEGORY IS FULL. BOOKS CAN BE MOVED UNTIL A CATEGORY IS SUBMITTED AS FINISHED.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) 2. Color Ahead: Read books with a cover that has a predominant color of the Team ranked ahead of you in the last Sunday Update of May or June. If your Team is ranked first, then use the color of the Team ranked last.

Blast-off Bronze
Examples: Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh Shadowfever (Fever, #5) by Karen Marie Moning The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (for Bronze, the mods have said that because it's a harder color, bronze does not have to be the predominant color but it does hav to "pop" out at you-so think bronze lettering, bronze sparkling etc..,)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) 3. Color Behind: Read books with a cover that has a predominant color of the Team ranked just behind you in the last Sunday Update of May or June. If your Team is ranked last, then use the color of the Team ranked first.

B'Dazzled Blue
**a really super light blue or a really dark Navy blue might not qualify but anything in between should be good.

(Please check with Mod running the discussion about the day’s DQs for which you want to volunteer.) Yes, you may ask to have a “buddy read” set-up for a particular book. It must be posted in the regular NBRC group, under the alphabetical authors’ listings, and includes the regular NBRC members not involved in the Tower Teams Reading Challenge. You may all read the same book, or pick and choose which ones you want to read, or from those already designated.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) 6 From May’s R-a-T Mini Challenges: Read books with a predominantly green color; or have a flower on the cover; or are set in a favorite holiday destination; or have a moon on the cover; or have a iconic landmark or monument on the cover; or would spell out “A.N.Y. R.O.S.E.” (same rules apply as for #5). Yes, you may count one book that has a flower, one that has a landmark, and one that helps spell “any rose” to reach a combined total of seven (7) books.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) 7. Seven: Read books with seven letters in the title. Read books that have seven words in the title. You may include the series name, or not, and you may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, and, the), whichever is to your benefit. Or read books that are the seventh book in a series. Or are written by an author with seven letters in their first, last, or combined names - and initials, if that helps. Or you may read books, that total seven words with the title, series name, and author combined. (Example: Summer Knight, The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher.) Or if the title has the word “seven” in the title. Or read a book that was originally published in the seventh month (July). Or you may spell out “S.E.V.E.N. U.P.” using the same spell-it-out criteria mentioned above.

I may (will) add to them later. This is a handy visual reference guide so that we can figure out what categories our team will have books for!

*NOTE*: For the cupcakes, my bookshelf for 2013 is 2013. I am on the Mini-Games Cupcake Spreadsheet 13 times . That means you may use my 2013 books up to 13 times, if you wish. I participated in one BoM with NBRC, so far -- that was for Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn.

Reading Plan

I'd happily just take care of task #7 for at least one round of 7 books. Of course, I don't want to box anyone out if that is a category they really want, though there would still be 7 slots open for a second round of that task.

or #5 for L or A from Life After Life by Atkins

#6 The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley has flower on cover. Book is by Lucinda Riley so if we need letters for R or O or L?

#3 blue cover Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman - or author last name is 7 letter for #7 or can offer letters L or M or S for #5

#7 or instead of for blue cover can use Charles or Dickens for seven letter word from Great Expectations

#6 or #5 for an A in ANY ROSE or TEAM or CHALLENGE FROM And the Mountains Echoed

Other books will read are We Need to Talk About Kevin which author Shriver works for #7 and copyright says published in July works for #7

Quiet The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver - would this cover count for a blue cover? The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin - half this cover is green with the trees and grass? Or can offer letter O or A or C from title or author's name

Also I will be reading Bastard Out of Carolina early July which could count for B in NRBC if that is a difficult letter.

NOTE - I will have Great Expectations and The Orchardist ready for you right away to use in the challenge right off the bat. I am finishing these up this week.

Vicky (librovert) Vicky's Books!

I'm splitting the list into books I'm definitely reading in June and books I'm definitely reading in July (though I'm not definitely reading all of them before the challenge ends).

I also have a bunch of other books that I could read during the challenge that will fit, so I can be flexible once we see where we're going to be lacking.

I haven't checked behind enemy lines yet, but I'm off to do that next, so I'll update this after I do. Done!

Whoa. Vicky.

Right?

(Mind you, it looks like a lot of books but I could very well have as many if I really get down to it, hehe).

Barbara (worthwhilereading) Does this book qualify for Bronze?

In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner

I am definitely reading this so would like a spot for it.

message 27: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I don't know about Bronze. But there's a green cover edition and it works for I & R in the spell outs.

message 28: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (worthwhilereading) Ok
Sorry about that...just trying to figure out how this all works.
Thanks for the help!!

message 29: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Well one of the mods might approve it for bronze.

Point is, if you want to read it, read it and when it's finished, I will find a spot for it.

message 30: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (worthwhilereading) Sounds good...I'll just keep reading.

message 31: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I can place the book you finished on June 2nd, Ordinary GRace, onto the 7% challenge.

Did you finish The House At the Sea's End on June 1st? It's showing June 2013, which is what I think it shows when you mark a book read on the 1st of the month. I can fit that in somewhere too.

So see you already gave us 2 books for this challenge.

message 32: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Oh and you don't have to list your books ahead of time. People have just been doing it to keep track for themselves.

Sorry, Barbara, it doesn't look bronze to me. Works for the letter "I" and "R."

yes, I just finished The House at Sea's End the other day.

Barbara (worthwhilereading) Also, I am probably going to end up reading more that 50 books this year, so does that skew things?
I put in 50 because I wasn't totally sure and I have been kind of tracking what I've been doing as a whole since January and 50 seemed reasonable. But, when I look at the last few weeks it looks like I am going to be ahead of schedule and I have a lot of books on my list that need to get read.
Just want to make sure it doesn't look like I dogged it, or should I change my 2013 goal a bit?

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
You may change your goal, if you desire, Barbara.

Mrs. Dresden, since Holly joined, and we have someone else named Caroline who wants to join (don't know book count yet), we'll probably be taking the Mod Account off the joint Cadet/Pewter Blue for the 7% Solution Challenge. Does that throw a monkey wrench into your set-up?

message 40: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Sorry didn't see your post yesterday. I don't think it will because the mod account hasn't finished any books yet. I didn't fill in anything unfinished into my submission plan. Only finished books.

I might have to take someone else away, too. Can you look at the spreadsheet and decide, Mary: HDLS?

message 42: by Mary X (last edited Jun 07, 2013 06:28AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Why do we have to lose someone when our team goal isn't even near the required goal of 1350?

eta: our team "goal" is only 1125 and I just looked at a bunch of other teams and their team goals are all over 1300, some 1400 & 1500+. So I don't get why we have to lose someone and not one of them? Should the team with a combined goal of 1500+ lose a member first?

message 43: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jun 07, 2013 06:30AM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments I think she means to take someone off the 7% challenge because our teams are combined for that?

If my guess is right, I'm curious to know how that is determined? Are you trying to average out how many people are doing the 7% from each team and trying to make us equal those? If any books can count "by accident" (as I call it when someone who isn't actively playing along can still get counted), do those people that get "removed" from the cadetblue/pewter combined not count at all, even by accident?

message 44: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) If I have to lose someone from the 7% challenge then I'd rather it be someone who hasn't finished a book for it yet. I'll have to see if there's anyone who hasn't finished something yet.

Sorry for the confusion, Mrs. Dresden. Yes, Teresa is right. I meant when you look at the "Pewter & Cadet Blue 7% Participants" tab along the bottom of the Team Assignments Spreadsheet. Total would be up to 1,502 - if I left everyone as is.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments I am curious about those teams with over 1400 books as their goal. I'm curious about the method behind the madness of having teams so high in goals vs others being lower. If it's too complicated to explain, that's cool, but I'm really curious if there is ever a chance to explain.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Is Michael active in the 7%? Just doing a quick scan, his name might be one to remove if he's not participating. I haven't been keeping up on exactly who all is playing along but I don't remember seeing him in the finished thread or the player update one.

Pretty simple, really. Those people changed their goals after assignments were made and the challenge began. We didn't feel it warranted a, "Now you must change Teams."

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 362 comments Ooooh, of course that makes sense. I'm not sure why I didn't consider that, LOL!

Michael was the one I was thinking about. I just didn't want to mess up Mrs. Dresden's behind-the-scenes shuffling and thought I'd ask first.
