I have always been fascinated by history, which started when I was a child and was talked through the "family tree" which actually can be traced back to William The Conqueror through a few marriages. This led to my reading books about 1066, King John, and English history right up to Queen Victoria when I was still a teenager. Then on to American history and French history and it just goes on and on. My interest in history appears to have been absorbed by my grandchildren and great nieces and nephews who have all done brilliantly in history at school. I have recently done an in-depth study of South African history with particular reference to the Jameson Raid at the end of 1895 - a reckless attempt to take the Transvaal and its goldfields for the British Empire.

Welcome, Jos. Great introduction. We have a South Africa topic:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hi Jen, Abu, Faith, Rosa, Mahfuz, Sergey, Christine, Ulla, Sue Ann and Jos. We are delighted to have you join us.
Hello I am Mary or M for short. I live in Vancouver BC Canada. I am currently self employed as a seamstress. I have a great love of Ancient, Roman, and Medieval history. I am looking forward to speaking with all of you.
Hello all ! I'm Michelle. I have always loved reading about history. Probably because my mother was going to school to be a history teacher when she had me so a lot of the books in our house were books about history and she instilled that love into me. Probably my favorite period of time to read about is the Baroque.
Hi Everyone,I am excited about joining your group. I have been an avid reader of 20th century English history, the Civil War, and John Kennedy. Right now I am reading the 20th Maine by John Pullen and The Irish Brigade by Joseph Bilby. Can't wait to participate in the discussions.

Hi, I'm Justin. I'm an economist with a state government. I have lived/traveled/worked in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, I have an affinity for histories of these areas, particularly things written in the 1800s by early American travelers. This past year I have read quite a bit of Greco-Roman history as well. I also like economic history as well as Christian church history.
Welcome, Justin. We are happy to have you join our group. How fascinating to have the chance to travel and live in other countries. I hope you were able to soak up the rich history that can be found in Asia and Europe.

Hey all,
My name is Twinkle, I am from India working in Sales for an IT company. I love reading books on history and mythology.
.......
I love reading fiction wherein mythology is retold as a part of history as well reading biographies of people, understanding the reasoning behind the decisions that they made and the impact that decision had, which can be seen today.
My next to-read is Guns, germs and Steel by Jared Diamond as well as the The Last Mughal by William Dalrymple.
I am open to suggestion for any book relating to History, Mythology or any other good read, worth reading.
Delighted to be a part of this group.

Hello Guys. I'm Abhishek and I'm from Hyderabad, India. I'm 23 years old. I'm mechanical engineer by profession but History is my passion. Hello everyone,I am Danail Hristov.
I have been examining Christianity for seventy years. In the process I encountered a fraud, which I believe to be unparalleled in the whole course of human history; but I did not lose confidence in God.
I'm interested in the Bible, also in the fundamental structure of the Universe and Life, the qualities and abilities of man, and finally, in human experience – historical, social and personal. And therefore I read history and non-fiction, especially biblical history, history and nature of religions, historical novels, mythology.
Your group seems serious. I really like your zero spam policy.

Hi everyone, I'm Christi. I'm an American living in Germany, soon to move to England, it seems. I'm particularly interested in the way history relates to current events, attitudes and habits. Lately I find myself trying to explain the "American perspective" (as a Midwesterner, as if there's only one perspective) to people from other backgrounds. I joined this group because I'm looking for particular recommendations on this topic: the roots of current American race relations, for example, or the philosophical basis of American exceptionalism. I want to converse kindly, respectfully, and clearly on these kind of fraught topics. I want to more formally educate myself about the culture in which I was raised. I also enjoy reading about the history of various diseases, the Middle Ages in general, WWI and the early 20th century.
But mostly right now I'm trying to focus because my boyfriend's English kids (late teenagers) have a lot of questions (and opinions, frankly) about racism and the police and it's just a little too pat to say what comes to mind at the moment, which is, "You can't understand because you weren't raised there."
Christi.....what a great introduction. I don't envy you the task of trying to explain the "American perspective"to those who have never lived in the US. I hope we can give you some books/discussions that will be of help. Our Civil Rights thread will get you started. It can be found at the following link:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Hello. My name is Bruce and I am a software developer from San Diego. I am a bibliophile and a history buff with a particular interest in Southeast Asia and World War II in the Pacific. I read a fair amount of fiction as well, but little historical fiction, as I find (to replay the cliché) the truth is most often more interesting than fiction.
