I am an RN and I enjoy reading about the history of Nursing and Nurses. I enjoyed, "We band of Angels", by Elizabeth Norman and "And If I Perish", by Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee. I am presently reading "The Girls of Atomic City", by Denise Kiernan.

Katy (kathy_h) Welcome, Arnold, Christopher, & Joel. Glad you could join us.

I am sure if you look through the threads you will find many topics that will interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books you mention should look:

Good start Carolyn on the citations. When you find the book in the "add book/author" link at the bottom there is an option to do a link or the book cover. Choose cover and then use the author tab to add the author.

Hello, I'm Hannah, an 18-year old college student from Charlotte, NC. I am interested in American History, preferably anything from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. Thomas Jefferson is, and will probably always be, my absolute favorite historical figure, and the majority of books I own are on him (and my collection is small, but it is growing yet). I look forward to reading even more history books and making new friends!

Since we're in the middle of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the 150th for the Civil War I've been primarily focused on those two areas during the last year or so.

Pam Haji | 1 comments Hi my name is Pam and I teach composition at Bergen Community College in northern New Jersey. I'm interested in (and wrote my dissertation at the University of Arizona in 1994) resistance memoirs. So my favorite topics are about the history of political resistance, what people say about their resistance, and what historians say about resistance. Thanks!

message 1313: by David (new)

David Groves Glad to be in the group.

I'm a former journalist from the US who had become an avid reader of history. What started as curiosity has become a desire to fill in the many gaps in my knowledge. It seems that whenever I read a history book, it yields at least seven or eight new curiosities about surrounding countries or adjacent time periods.

When I read A History of Venice, I found myself curious about Croatia, since they seemed like Venice's Mexico (superpower supply state); the unification of Italy; Florence and the Medici; the hypocrisy of the Papacy; and Palermo under Charles d'Anjou; among others.

I've recently read histories of the 1990s Serbian War; Shanghai from 1800; the whole of China's history; Stalin's Russia; Russian espionage on the West; Russian espionage in Hitler's Germany; and currently, Kim Philby's Russian years.

Looking forward to what you're interested in.

Elissa | 3 comments Excited to be on this site with like minded people. That is to say people who enjoy and like history as much as I do. The past has always interested me as a way to understand the here and now. Am primarily interested in political history but am fascinated by most historical topics. It is appalling to know that schools no longer give history the importance they used in their curriculums. I am a native New Yorker and like to chronicle alot of what transpires here, through notes, pictures and film as I believe it is all history in the making.

My name is Frank, and not too astonishing for someone part of GR and this group, I enjoy reading and history. Whereas I am pretty general in my history interests, I have a weak spot for European history between CE 600 and CE 1400 -- commonly but unjustified known as the dark ages.

Sean (seanner) | 1 comments Hi everybody. My name is John Stephens - 'Sean' with friends and family. I am a committed Goodreads browser and enjoy reading and discussing History.

Briefly, I am Founder and Artistic Director for Theatre Gael, a twenty-five-year- old theatre company committed to the preservation and production of the cultural heritage of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Celtic America in Atlanta, GA. Also WORLDSONG, an arts in education outreach program that focuses on literacy, creative expression and human rights. I am an actor, teacher, playwright, occasional crank and published poet.

I believe we are, through our shared human nature, storytellers longing for a good story. History offers us some roaring good tales. Eugene O'Neill, an Irish-American playwright and fine storyteller reminds us - “There is no present or future-only the past, happening over and over again-now.” So, while the past happens to me once again, I will enjoy the story.

I look forward to the History Book Club.

Best, Sean

I enjoy reading history alot, not in a way of mere enjoyment of reading, but more like a joy of pure gain of knowledge.
I believe history gives us a better understanding about ourselfs, considering the human being has probably gone through every possible situation in the past, it is the self consciousness of humanity, and the enlightenment of the future, only a fool would abandon the opportunity of learning this much knowledge, and I tend not to be one.

I am delighted to be part of this club, and I am looking forward to discuss some of the fascinating topics that are recommended.

My first real interest in history came about during 8th grade- with the help of a brilliant teacher, I ended up with a 104% in the class, and an intense love for studying the past... the mistakes and the victories of others... and being able to learn from the experiences of others. Thank you for allowing me to join this group, I cannot wait to discuss some fantastic literature!

Recently I decided that either my education had failed me or I had failed myself when it came to history so I decided to educate myself. I figured I would start off at home and so I am tackling U.S. history first.

So far I have read The Glorious Cause (Robert Middlekauff), 1776 (David McCullough), Founding Brothers (Joseph Ellis), American Revolution a history ( Gordon Wood) and am currently tackling Empire of liberty by Gordon Wood.

I am absolutely loving the journey so far and am looking forward to learning and enjoying more of these amazing books.
