I always loved those 90s long haired rockers. Sebastian Bach from Skid Row was my favourite. Makes me laugh now to think about it!

I agree with Jon Bon Jovi!
Johnny Depp is another that Mary posted who I remember from 21 Jump Street and he has aged very well ;)

Here is another one. Poison and the singer Bret Michaels (back when having a name spelt differently was unusual... so *cool* to be Bret with one "t"...lol)

Johnny Depp and Jon Bon Jovi! I have a whole different appreciation for Bon Jovi now as I see how much he does for his community and even the state of New Jersey.

message 1065: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I remember my bff, at the time, getting hysterical and crying when Bon Jovi got married.

FYI: I will probably be gone most of the day tomorrow. My daughter has a 4H fair where she's showing her Guinea Pig. I'll have my Kindle with me so I can get some reading done.

message 1066: by Riya (new)

Riya Speaking of which Mary, I'll be gone from Sunday afternoon until Friday morning since I'm going to a super competitive tennis camp which I don't believe has internet. I'll bring some books along though so I can still get some reading done :)

message 1067: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments No worried Riya. Have a great time.

I will be around Sunday to do the update. No big plans other than going to Mom's to do her yard work. My younger brother is going too to do the hardcore stuff. (Mom has a garden club, touring garden and so it's more than just mowing and some weeding).

Update on Mom, she came back to work this week but for just a couple of hours a day. She can drive now. They take the stent they put in her intestines out on Monday. It's supposed to be an out-patient thing. But the last procedure was supposed to be just 1 night and she was there for 5.

message 1072: by Nancy from NJ (last edited Jul 26, 2013 06:33PM) (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I began reading The English Girl (Gabriel Allon, #13) by Daniel Silva by Daniel Silva last week and today I made an executive decision to put this book down even though I read almost 200 pages. I was plain bored although this author usually finds me riveted to my seat. Maybe it's not the right time or the right book but I put it down. Now I see it is available in the audio version at one of my libraries and I hope it's still there tomorrow morning. I did begin Elegy for Eddie the 9th book (I think it's the 9th book) in the Maisie Dobbs series for a couple of challenges. I first read this book when a clerk at Barnes & Noble suggested to me and am I glad I listened to her. I love this time period - between WWI and WWII and the place, London and most of all the character of Maisie Dobbs. An instantly I fell in love with this author's writings and scenarios.

The author Elizabth Berg writing about a female character in her book, Say When, author writing about a female character said, "You know before you know." In this case the woman's husband was cheating on her but in my case I translate this to mean, I generally know when a book is pleasing to me or when it's not within maybe 25 pages.

So, how many pages do you read before you know it's a winner to you and at what point do you give up on a title.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) With 86 books read so far this year, I am 30 books ahead of schedule or 29% according to the Goodreads tracker. I think this is based on my goal of 100 books. But since it's just shy of August, I will be increasing my goal when I reach 95 books. Hopefully I will get there shortly.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok next question of the day.

What is your favorite children's book? Either from your own childhood or you kids, grandkids, whatever.

From my childhood, I loved Charlotte's Web by E.B. White Someone gave me a copy when I was in the hospital for appendicitis when I was 9.

From my daughter's childhood and the one's I kept for her kids because she loved them so much:

Loved and would cry every time I read it: Love You Forever by Robert N. Munsch

Another beautiful children's book: Stellaluna by Janell Cannon

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don Wood Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans

My daughter named her baby doll Papito after the boy in Madeline.

message 1079: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Not many people know of my favorite children's series. But those who do, LOVE IT!!

I ADORE the Trixie Belden series. It's basically a younger version of Nancy Drew. Trixie is 13 when the series starts. She and her brothers and friends solve mysteries in their tiny town, as well as some places they travel to. The series was started in 1948, the last in 1986. The first 6 books were all written by Julie Campbell. The others were written by various authors under the pseudonym Kathryn Kenny.

I used to have EVERY one of the series (39 books) plus some extras. Sadly I stored them with a "friend" and she got rid of them. :( I have 13 again now and I buy every single copy I see (though I've only found 3 in my tiny town so far), and I always will. I still love the series!!

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I love these questions, I'm bummed this business at work keeps me away when all the discussions are happening though!

Favorite Children's Books, hmmm...

The Catwings (Catwings, #1) by Ursula K. Le Guin series and Bunnicula (Bunnicula, #1) by James Howe !

Also Shadows in the Water (Starbuck Family Adventure, #2) by Kathryn Lasky , Matilda by Roald Dahl , Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech , The Indian in the Cupboard (The Indian in the Cupboard, #1) by Lynne Reid Banks , The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman , and any of The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children, #1) by Gertrude Chandler Warner or American Girl books (Samantha was my favorite!)

Favorite picture books would be The Tub People by Pam Conrad and Budgie at Bendick's Point by Sarah Ferguson . There's another book that I sort of remember but can't remember the name of it, it was about this ridiculously weird family that moved into a regular neighborhood. They had couches in their front yard, crazy hair and some crazily painted van that they drove up in. I think they were the Arboles or something. Ahh it's going to drive me crazy, anyone have any clue? lol

Do read them Lisa Kay. They are the kinds of books that reach out to you and don't let go. As soon as I began

Elegy for Eddie (Maisie Dobbs #9) by Jacqueline Winspear

yesterday I was back in London with Maisie solving a mystery. I am a very obsessed reader and would suggest reading them in order. You see Maisie's progression as a motherless child whose father works for a lady to become first a nurse during WWI to a confident psychologist and sleuth by the 1930's.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I loved many of the books already mentioned above and also the Bobbsy Twin books and a bit older the Nancy Drew series and the All of a Kind series which took place on the Lower East side and told the tale of a Jewish girl and her family.

The book I remember most from our daughter's time reading is the oldie but most beloved

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So just dropped my daughter off at the 4H fair. We had to bring her craft & baking projects last night. She got blue ribbons for her 2 photographs and her 2 different cookies. Unfortunately her origami did not do well because she misread the rules. She read it as up to 5 pieces but it was supposed to be 5+ pieces. But oh well.

Last year her guinea pig one 3 trophies and a blue ribbon.

Anyway, just popped home to fix myself up a little, have breakfast and pack a cooler. Then I'm going back.

I just did a check of everyone's books and noticed a few people who forgot to tag books to their challenge shelf or added books under the 160 page limit to their shelf.

I don't want everyone to hate getting PMs from me because I'm pointing out mistakes, so if everyone could double check their shelves to make sure they aren't a culprit, that would be super! :)

message 1097: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So came home from the 4H fair, logged on to my computer to find it had a virus. So been cleaning up my computer for the last 2 hours.

Last year the kid & pig won 3 trophies, 4 blue ribbons and 1 red ribbon. This year no trophies but 5 blue ribbons between the pig and her craft projects. They dinged her for the pigs nails being too long. We did try and trim them last night but it's not exactly something they love having done to them.
