Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I had a question that came to my mind at work when I was busy with the menial work of cleaning folders. I should have written it down because now I cannot, for the love of books, remember what I wanted to ask. :(

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments It'll come back to ya Manuela. But in the mean time *shares my memory pills with ya*.

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Ha, boring, meaningless tasks bring back my memory.
Here is my question of the day (well it might be more than one but it is all related and I need some honest feedback here - thanks everyone):

Are you angry at book writers, whose books you purchase, if their works are riddled with mistakes, even if the story is good or has potential? Would you spend money on books that have grammatical and spelling mistakes? Get you angry at them (the self publishing writers) for pushing out one book after the other without doing "after care", especially if people point out mistakes? Is it all money grabbing or are these people just creative authors who care more about the story than the speech to convey it? Do you care if the book was for free???

message 3104: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1747 comments If it's a ton of grammatical and spelling mistakes to the point of having problems reading the book then it's really annoying and sucks when hard earned money is spent on it. Small and minor things are understandable.

message 3105: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments What Dhfan said. =)

Even if the book is free, I get highly annoyed when there are a ton of grammatical and spelling mistakes, even more so if I paid for the book. An occasional error (or a few) I can forgive, but error after error? Um, no.

Even worse, I've read a book or two where sentences were truncated halfway through--literally, there was only half a sentence. And this continued throughout the book.

message 3106: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Sounds like that person was beyond gipped with that publishing company or with their editing team if there were tons of half sentences popping up. That is definitely not good.

I'm at the point really where it's like you get what you pay for in free reads these days. I used to be more annoyed. But it for sure seems like free does not mean 'paid any kind of attention to detail whatsoever' where most authors are concerned.

And if I paid for something that has a ton of errors I'm pissed and chucking it. Physical book or ebook. Does not matter.

message 3107: by Cindi (new)

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 534 comments What Charlotte said. But I have stopped reading *ahem, Lora Leigh* for pissing me off in the editing/proofing department after being notified several books in a row. Just don't need it. Too many good authors out there.

Now if it was Author Goddess...actually, I remember her apology after hurrying out a book that got really bad reviews. No further problems. Fini!

Yeah, definitely not good. And it was otherwise a pretty good book, which is what really sucks about it.

Agreed, you get what you pay for in free reads ... and some very low-priced reads, too, come to think of it. Anymore, I find myself checking the one- and two-star reviews on free (and low-priced) reads, to see what readers disliked. If the issue with bad editing comes up continuously, then I know to skip the book.

Don't get me wrong, I have found some absolute gems in free and low-priced reads. =) And yes, I've gotten highly addicted to some series that way (our own AG included, when the Kindle DH books went on sale for like $1.99 a couple years ago) ;D

Cindi, I agree thoroughly ... too many good authors out there, to mess with books with bad editing. =)

message 3109: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments That is always the craziness of the situation really. Cause you do find those few good ones and then they keep luring ya back for more only to get smacked with the bad ones all over again til that lucky draw again. It's a cycle, haha.

message 3110: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Well, the reason why I was asking is, that I had some books with really good or potentionally good stories and the reading experience was ruined by things like "his hands were bound over his head" - "he moved his hands down her hips" (wtf? wasn't he just tied up???) or James and Ralph hit it off real good, "I want to taste you" said Tim (who the f*** is Tim??? He wasn't mentioned in the story before). I think, oh must be a new writer but when I check them out they have already like 20 books (even if it is short stories or novellas) published. And don't get me wrong, their other books cost usually around $4 to $7 which I class as not very cheap for e-books. So in my head I think if those books are the same like the free one, I don't want to spend more money on it. I know that some writers take critic seriously and edit their works if made aware of their mistakes, but most don't seem to care at all. I work hard for my money so I want to know what I buy and it should be good. I don't mind a mistake here or there but constant stuff ups annoy the hell out of me.

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments New Question:

What do you do when you just discovered the series you have been reading has suddenly been discontinued?

Just happened to me and it was just going to be a 4 book series as that. I'm soooo bummed. I've been waiting for months to see when the 4th book was coming out and now it's NEVER coming out ugh. I'm tempted to message the author and ask has she considered self publishing lol.

message 3113: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments I have a paper book series I read a few years ago (luckily the library had all 5 books so far) and you know how it is when there are so many interesting supporting characters who all deserve a book and that writer has other series going that she spends more of her time on. It is frustrating. She hasn't answered my emails either, if she will continue with the Masters of Time (I think it was) series. Booohooohoo

message 3114: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I've also had that happened!! A few weeks ago I checked on the series, to find out that the 3rd release still hadn't happened. Been waiting 2 1/2 years for it. I finally sucked it up and checked the author's website. The books aren't even on her website any more. I was so confused. I asked around in my groups and was finally told she had discontinued the series due to publisher issues. Dude! She wrote 2 books and the 2nd ended on a cliff hanger. It kind of sucks being left in suspension with a series that is not complete. Even worse when you've spent money on the books already

message 3115: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Can you return them? I mean, leaving on a CH is bad enough, not continuing it, should come with a money back warranty.

message 3116: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I highly doubt it. I got those books years ago.I'm just trying to figure out why there isn't a notice on her website to state that kind of info.

message 3117: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (last edited Jun 07, 2015 08:56AM) (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Maybe the author is still so emotionally devastated or locked in one of those binding legal gag orders with the publishers in some court somewhere. Where she can't even talk about certain projects any more?

And yea I know right? In general, I feel like even if you can't say much about the series any more. Just put it out there that the damn thing is over! I've felt this way before with another series, even though on the author's site, she kept it posted that she is just going through some writer's block but is still determined to get out the next book in her series. Even gave a name to it. But it's been YEARS now since I've last read that from her. So not sure if she totally gave up on it or what now.

Oh and I did message the author of the initial series I was talking about. And she said, that yes even she was sorry she couldn't see the 4th book through. And how the idea she pitched wasn't what her publisher was looking for and that the other books in the series hadn't sold as well. I even posed the self pub idea to her. But I think she is at the stage where she is kind of wigged out about trying something like that and losing her secure publishing. So she didn't even address that and asked if I tried one of her other complete series that is kind of similar to the one I was already reading. But I'm not really feeling her other stuff like I was with the series I was currently reading.

About 15 years ago I was in a car wreck and broke my left hand/wrist (I'm a lefty) and OMG you wouldn't believe how hard it was to write with my right! And learning to, ahem, take care of personal hygiene with the other hand was, well, the shizz. So many things were so hard that I'd be feasting on those mice!

message 3130: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh no, that had to suck Cindi. Definitely glad all your limbs are on the mend and don't have to go through that again. I may talk a good game about losing one my limbs, but yea I'd probably be all kinds of handicapped as well too. As I've tried doing stuff with my left hand solely a few times, just to challenge the ol' brain as they say. And even brushing my teeth was like a stranger was doing bad things to my mouth. Thank goodness all my bits and pieces work as they should as well.

Was thinking the same thing Cindi.

When I did go the last time I jumped on the treadmill, but I do walk to warm up.

Not in the least. I'm actually the ding bat that doesn't exactly have a clue what in the world to start with when at the gym. I was hoping others that might go know more than I do, LOL. Cause although I went Wed. to try it out the different machines at my dad's gym. I have hardly a clue what to start on, cause I haven't been in a gym environment since I was in school(middle to high school) gym.

So all this weight lifting stuff and even the other bikes and stuff is well over my head. If it wasn't for my dad showing me some stuff that first day, I'd have spazzed out as everybody else seems to have such a routine and know what they want to hop on and go to it. Whereas I'm just standing around like what the freak do I do?

I will add that I had to look up tips for the gym and a ideal routine on what to do when there. So definitely not trying to make any one feel bad in the least. If anything educate myself, as I'm the least fitness inclined person that I know. Hell even my 70+ year old dad is taking to the machines and lifting and flipping around on stuff like he is a freaking trained gymnast or something. I tried and I think nearly dislocated my arm pits, haha.

message 3147: by Manuela (new)

Manuela (manu21) | 2559 comments Do what you like best. Start of slow, don't overdo it and don't get into a competition with the guy next to you on the treadmill. LOL It needs to feel right for you and if you use weights rather do more repeats in the beginning than too much weights. Make sure you do your reps in front of a mirror to control your movements and avoid injury.

message 3148: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh I'm hardly the competitive type in the least on stuff like that. But yea will have to figure out which machines I like best. I know I'm not a big fan of the treadmill. Any sort of jogging stuff tended to wear me out too quickly. But I think I might try the elliptical thingie maybe. Or this one version of the stationary bike where it has a back support and the seat is wider(hopefully softer. totally had the most evilest wedgie from the stationary bike I was on before. SOOOOO not looking forward to THAT again).

Yea, I think I'll hold off on the weights too save for the few pound weights my mom had here at the house. Cause the dudes at my dad's gym kind of intimidate me a bit with all that weight lifting. And all the scowling they do watching themselves lift. It's like dude it is not that serious. Turning to the left and right. Looking like a step away from kissing their biceps or something. That's just not my arena over there at the moment.

Yea, mainly my thing has always been to find a good routine to help me work on toning my thighs and arms up better. So from the routine I found online they said it was good to try doing Mon, Wed, Fri, for cardio and Tues. and Thurs. for weight training(or as I'll think of them work on my arms and thighs days) and then do static stretching after on each of those days. Which I guess is post work out stretching(which again I'm not sure if that is better than stretching before the work out or not as I've read somewhere that said that it wasn't such a good idea to do it before the workout, can't remember why though now).

And also for doing the cardio workout, like how much cardio do you think is good? Cause I know for my dad he starts out with the stationary bike before he does this one rowing machine and other machines for his work out. But again since I'm just starting out and I know the one site I looked up, they said do it for 15 mins. But since I'll be going with my dad(at least two times a week to start out. He goes everyday) and we stay roughly an hour or so. And I also want to try out the other cardio machines. Should I do like 15 mins per machine or do like 8 mins at first on each machine to try it out to see if I like it and then switch?

Also what are your thoughts on a good snack would be before working out? Popz has his usual breakfast(cereal, tea, boiled egg, juice) before he goes. But I'm not usually a morning person and eating so early is not my thing. So I have no clue what to munch on before hand other than a sandwich bag with a few cherrios in there.

message 3149: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (last edited Oct 04, 2015 08:07AM) (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Okay this is how out of shape I am. I was trying out this 10 min beginner cardio workout I found yesterday-
http://www.popsugar.com/fitness/10-Mi... and although I was kind of into it for the first few mins(as uncoordinated as ever mind you), I could barely last the full interval of the reps they were going for each exercise and had to stop more than a few times throughout the clip. And totally feel a touch queasy after doing so at that.

So I more than know for sure I am very much out of shape if I can't even last 10 mins with an at home video, haha. But I'll keep at it and eventually I can be on cue with the darn thing, til I can save up for this gym membership. But til then I'm definitely going to cut everything down to at least 4 mins of exercise then 4 mins of resting starting out on the machines. Otherwise I might have projectile vomit incident and yea I don't think the little paper towels and spray bottle cleaners be enough for that clean up.

message 3150: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments LOL! Yeah, that would be nasty.

I'm not in great shape either, and I certainly haven't been to a gym since ... high school. Although I did take an aerobics class in college. =)

I'd say that you've got the right of it, Dhfan--start off slow and work your way up. If a few minutes at a time is all you can handle for now, then that works as long as it raises your heart rate.

I remember reading about a marathon runner who started running to lose weight, and the first time she ran, she almost collapsed at the end of the block. Needless to say, it took her a while before she could run for longer than that. =)
