Hi guys! I can't believe I've been reading for 2 days and am only at 33%. As you've mentioned, even though English is my first language, there are some scenes that I have to re-read because I get lost (VERY VERY long sentences as you said Blacky) (view spoiler)[especially in that scene where Mr. Thornton visits the Hales and are speaking of masters & men and the impending strike. I read that scene 3 times because I was just so lost! But found the "discussion" and how heated Margaret and Mr. Thornton got amusing.

At this point in the book -
"Mother," said he, stopping, and bravely speaking out the truth, "I wish you would like Miss Hale."
"Why?" asked she, startled by his earnest, yet tender manner. "You're never thinking of marrying her?-a girl without a penny."
"She would never have me," said he, with a short laugh.
..."as I have no thought or expectation of ever asking her to be my wife, you'll believe me for the future that I'm quite disinterested in speaking about her..."

the opening is part of the episode and the closing credits last about a minute TOPS. But it's no wonder, I know that often the BBC shows are shorter in America, don't know why they do it :(

Also find it sort of funny that (view spoiler)[in classics, when characters say they love one another this early on, we don't really think anything of it. We sigh, we swoon, we think of the romance. But when we read contemp pieces, if the characters (who barely know one another) confess their love, it's thought of more as the insta-love syndrome. Also wonder if "love" was thought of differently back then, as more of an affection or infuation. Anyways, don't mind my rambling! (hide spoiler)]

No, I like your rambling! I think maybe back then, it was more of an abstract thought, you know? Like, you didn't see even parents being overly affectionate with their kids, especially in the upper classes. It was considered vulgar to show outward affection, except in big moments.

Everyone! I am dropping by just to tell you this: I AM LOVING THIS BOOK!!! and ready to gush over it! (well, not right now, but as soon as I am back home)

All day long, my eyes were literally glued to the pages, so excited was I to learn more about Margaret's new life in Milton. At some point, my friends had to yell at me to get my attention, they asked me why I was "wasting my time reading classic literature when I should be reading The Economist or The NY Times" (we are majoring in finance). So I told them with a great sense of pride that North and South deals with many subjects that we are actually studying in Economic History, such as the effects of industrialization and the relations between employers and workers... Before I knew it, I was shaking the book in front of their faces and demanding that they read it, if not for leisure, at least for study purposes :D

This book is both instructive and so much enjoyable. Who wouldn't want to read it?!

End of tirade. (for now :p)
