I thought it had to do with ballast probably, too, but honestly i don't entirely understand about ballast. Only the general concept. How much weight-wise does your long boat need, Sarah? Does this number vary with any conditions for you guys?

So our bedroom has the hull sectioned in to 4 and each section has 240kg. I think our bedroom took 300-ish bricks in total. the bathroom has no ballast because the waste tank is there. As for the rest of the boat, I'm guessing the sections will be same size. Then we have loose ballast in the engine room to help balance it right. most of the heavy items like fridge, wood burner, cooker, sinks are on the same side of the boat so we have more loose ballast on the other side so we don't list. All boats are different depending on size and layout of boat.
I don't know exactly how much ballast we need - we just weighed the gravel we took out and put the equivalent in in bricks. Our boat is basically a box on water and with no ballast, there's nothing stopping the boat from floating on its side or roof rather than its Base. Ballast keeps us the right way up, stops us listing but also so it doesn't rock about too much.
That all makes sense, Sarah. Thanks for explaining some. Carrying bricks around is pretty hard work, especially with the multi-task aspect - loading, unloading, moving onto boat. Be careful. I'm going to work on the back patio now. Once a year it needs a good cleaning as otherwise will get mossy algae coating and be dangerously slippery.
Probably a silly question, but if you have 5 very heavy visitors do you need to make sure they aren't all standing on one side or the other or all in front, all in back?
I bought a box of mangoes today. There were only 4 in the box, but they were massive. I just finished cutting them up and bet I got almost 3 pounds of cleaned slices.Yum! And that doesn't include all the flesh I scraped off the peels with my teeth before throwing them out. :-D
Oh, I love mangoes! I'm obsessed with the Mango/Black Tea/Lemonade Starbucks has right now, and I'm making a mango salsa to go with some Mahi Mahi this week. Other than grocery shopping, I've had a relaxed day. Finished a "clean-out-my-closet" project, watched Iron Man 2 (I'm trying to watch the entire MCU in order), and then spent the majority of the day reading!
Tejas Janet wrote: "Will you be freezing some portion of this, Kandice? That's a lot of fresh mango! Yum!"Probably not. I have teenagers and they always have people over so things disappear quickly!
I haven't had the Starbucks drink. I love mango so may need to try that.
@Kandice - I've seen day hire boats go past with a bunch of big men on all sat on one side of the boat - it definitely leans to one side and sits a bit lower in the water but it's ok. These boats were originally designed to hold tonnes of coal to transport around the country so it can handle weight ok. But obviously it's better for it to be evenly distributed throughout the boat.We are supposed to be going for a cruise today with our friends in another boat but we have torrential rain and a thunderstorm right now so it could be fun.
I love Mango. Fresh mango. Dried mango. Mango smoothies. Mango chutney. Yummy! I don't normally go to Starbucks (another one on my boycott list), however I did have to get a drink from them the other day after cycling a long distance to the train station and not having taken my water bottle with me. The normal shop at the station was closed due to the engineering works so I begrudgingly bought something from them. I had the Iced Mango Tea drink Lynda - I don't think there was lemonade in it though. I really liked it. I am going to try making it myself.
I love green mango, too, but it's hard to find where I live (or anywhere, unless you have your own tree). We used to use it to make pickled mango, which you can also buy, but I like the way my grandmother made it. Has anyone had green mango salad? There's a Thai restaurant by our house that makes it- it's like a green papaya salad, but with mango.
I just had some li hing mango.
Also, if you have a lot of extra ripe mango, you can blend it and make mango bread. Yummy!
I'm not gonna lie, Mango bread sounds amazing! I've never had green mango, I'll have to look for it next time we're at a Thai restaurant.
Mango bread sounds good! I just use ot for smoothies although years ago I did make a black bean salad with mango.
Would you just substitute some of the wet ingredients in bread for the blended mango? I'm a big one for fruit breads. In the winter (not like we have real winter in SoCal!) I use a banana bread recipe I have and substitute a large jar of babyfood for each banana. I like plum, apricot and peach. I'll have to try it with mango.

Sorry if this overloads your TBR shelves... :)
I saw that Sandra. I wrote down the series I haven't heard of last night while I was on my phone and today I am going to look at them more closely. I saw the link posted by GR on Facebook.
OK. So it was bound to happen. I fell in the canal... I guess that means I'm a proper boater now! We've had a bit of an adventure this weekend moving the boat. We tied our boat to a friends boat and we drove them as one. We didn't make it quite as far yesterday as we'd hoped (a visit to the pub might have had something to do with it) so we had to finish it off this morning. It's chucking it down with rain here. So we just moored up my boat and my foot slipped off the gunwale of my boat and I fell in to the canal between the boat and the bank. Both legs, in up to my bottom. And as I went in, my bottom made impact with a post just beneath the water line. I was very wet and soggy and I have a achy bum now.
Thanks for the list Sandra! I'm sure my tbr will grow :)Ouch Sarah! Did your partner fall into the canal once already or has he still managed to avoid it?
Ouch Sarah! I hope your bum stops aching soon. It sounds like a classic 'You've Been Framed' moment!
I guess it was just a matter of time."That's what I thought. Living in a boat probably means this happens from time to time.
I'm the first of me and my partner to fall in. And as you have all said, it was inevitable. It could have been worse - it could have been winter, I could have hit my head and it could have been in a more popular spot with lots of spectators. Decided I was going to read for the rest of the day in my jammies.
Reading in your jammies sounds well deserved after your impromptu swim! Today is the day the auditors show up at my work. They should be here in just about an hour! I have everything ready for them as much as I can and fixed the few little errors I had found. I just hope they don't nitpick every little detail of my billings. But, that is what our sister company said the audit company did to them last week. Wish me luck that is goes well!
Ouch! Hope you feel better Sarah! A day of reading and staying in your jammies sounds like a perfect plan!Good luck with the audit, KimeyDiann!

Good luck, but it sounds like you are so prepared that luck will have little to do with it!
I hope everything is working fine and smooth, KimeyDiann. Good luck.I finally finished my blog today. It's still in kind of diapers, though. I decided to keep it in booklikes.com for now, until I have a better idea of what I expect of it for the future. Then I could import it to blogger or wordpress.
(No self-publishing intended with this post!)

Sorry for you audit. The company I work for owns several companies, and it seems we go through state audits annually. It's almost become a routine cost of doing business; but it sure is stressful. Is it a state audit or IRS? We've found that as long as we're documenting, or doing our best to document, they've been pretty reasonable to us. We do have a larger corporate entity that the state seems to be sniffing around for; if they ever audit that one, it will be a big big deal.
I hope the audit went well KimeyDiann.Well I'm feeling a little less sore today - it only hurts when I touch it, sit on it, bump it as opposed to constantly like yesterday. I think I'll survive.
I am all done with my microsoft office classes!! Woohoo!! I received an email from my Advisor and will be receiving my certificate of completion in the mail shortly :-)Trying to decide on what coursework I want to take next :-) I may take a customer service course next even though I have tons of experience but a certificate of completion in that course couldn't hurt :-) I am just relieved to be done with Microsoft office.
I'm just popping in for a few minutes. My mother passed away on Friday and my priorities have been elsewhere. I'll be returning home on Sunday, and will catch up fully after that.
