Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments @Sarah. Random question. Do you ever get drunk on the boat and crank "london's calling". By the Clash. I've always liked the song anyway so I know I would at least have a phase of cranking that tune on my boat. If i lived on a boat. Or even by the river

message 805: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Great question, travis. ;)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments "London is drowning, and I, I live by the river"?

I just play it loudly anyway!!

message 807: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Great song Travis! It's not one of cranked up since being on the boat but I might have to rectify that! Most of our music is in mp3 format on my partner's pc which we've not hooked up yet. So generally it's BBC radio 6 music we've been listening to. I feel a bit deprived actually. We're going to get a stereo soon though which plays mp3 and I can't wait.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The second viewing is this afternoon and I'm nervous already! Half because if there are no big issues with the house we will put in an offer which is a huge decision, and half because I'm afraid the meeting will be cancelled like last time.

And still so long to go. It's 9am here and the appointment is at 4pm.

message 809: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Good luck this afternoon Peggy. Immerse yourself in work (or better, a book) so that time passes by a bit quicker. I know that when I clock watch, time seems to go so slowly! I do know how it feels when you put in an offer - it is a big step. I was both really excited but so scared at the same time when we put in an offer on our boat. I guess we can never really know 100% if something is right for us or even that things will work out until we do it. But that's life and we have to take risks otherwise we would never try or do anything. Do let us know how things go Peggy!

Tasha Good luck this afternoon, Peggy!

I'm trying to get some simple work done, can't really focus on more complicated things. 3.5 hours!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments No real news yet. I still loved the house, our real estate agent said it seemed like a good house, no major issues as far as he could see. However, he did say it was seriously overpriced. The current owners bought it in 2007 for 173.000. The asking price is 205.000 euros (it was 225 even!), but he says if we would pay 185.000 it would already be going in a high direction. He says it makes sense that the sellers asked 225 and now 205, due the kind of mortgage they probably have, but if we would pay that much we could get into trouble ourselves if we ever wanted to sell it. Also, some important information our agent wanted to see was not available at the moment so the selling agent is going to send it all via email. We'll wait for that and if it all sounds good we might put in an offer, but I think it might be too low. On the other hand, the sellers have bought a new house already, so they may not have that much time to wait for high offers. To be continued!

message 816: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments A bidding war can certainly drive up the price, but you're wise to consider the resale value.

Here, housing prices fluctuate depending on supply and demand. In my city, when there is an oil boom, house prices are escalated. As soon as the boom dies down, the housing prices drop dramatically. People can't sell their houses at the price they paid for it, or they take a huge loss. A house could drop $100,000 easily. It's really a gamble here. Lots of people play the speculation game - buy when it's low, sell when it's high.

message 817: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I was thinking about getting dressed and dragging myself off to my office to get to work when a friend phoned, wanted to know if I wanted to play hookey with her.

I jumped in the shower and got dressed. She should be here momentarily - we're going fabric shop hopping. We're going to hit all the quilt shops between here and Dawson Creek, which is 1-1/2 hour drive away. Like I need more fabric! (Not) But a day at play is really appealing. I'm waiting for paperwork from clients anyway. They were to have dropped it off before today. It's not here, so I won't be either. :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Have fun Janice?

What job do you have? Sounds ideal, very flexible!

message 819: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That should have been an exclamation mark!

message 820: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments It's difficult when you put an offer in especially when there are a number of people interested and when you really want a place. It's good that you have a good agent - he sounds like he is in your corner rather than the owners/estate agent.

Playing hookey sounds fun Janice! You can never have enough fabric! I had to get rid of loads when I moved on to the boat. Bur I am looking to buy some more as I need to make curtains for the boat over the Winter period.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Peggy, seems like things are moving in the right way. Finger crossed!

I did have fun, thanks!

I'm a self-employed bookkeeper and I work out of my home. It can be flexible, but I've kind of turned into a workaholic.

message 823: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Our dog and I have to be out of the house for a long while today. The pest control people are coming to debug our apartment since we are still having problems with house centipedes and some spiders now too :(
Fingers crossed it works :)
Guess Blake and I will be walking through some pet stores and hang out at the park :)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments About a week straight now of starting the day at 70°f and working up to anywgere from 85-95°f all at a constant 80% humidity. I make it about the first 10 minutes of the day before my clothes are stuck to me. I hat e it

message 825: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thats a 21-35°C daily with humidity

message 826: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments ... 80% humidity? What? Is that like walking through treacle?

We get all worked up if we hit 37% humidity here at 3pm on a summer's afternoon (thunderstorm time). I do live in the most unhumid part of the country though.

message 827: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Normally making multiple trips for parts is frustrating. Yesterday everytime I realized I needed another part it was like Yes! Anither trip with max AC for parts

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Too hot for me!

message 832: by Kandice (new)

Kandice It's been about 40C here for about 5 days, high humidity and it sucks! We don't have AC so I've been sleeping in our back yard in a mosquito tent hoping to catch a breeze. The tent wouldn't be necessary if our neighbors hadn't allowed their pond to go gross, but that's another story!

Like Travis I look for every reason to run an errand in the air conditioned car!

message 833: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Good luck Peggy!

It's been really humid and hot here too (in PA) so I feel for you.

message 835: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Another round of good luck, Peggy!

message 836: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, really hot here in PA.
We don't use our AC either. My experience is that if we turn on the AC nobody goes out of the house. So I prefer to let the kids playing outside in the shade with a hose, than inside in front of the TV or the computer. We have a really shaded park at a walking distance, too.
In addition its very expensive to use the AC, at least here. I have read PA has one of the most expensive electricity fares of the country. Not sure is it's accurate.

message 837: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) We had record-breaking heat this past weekend it was 106°F, I think it's only supposed to be around 95° F today, but it isn't even cooling down at night, but on the plus side it is a very dry heat :-)

message 838: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Wr have 2 AC units in house. Of course we never are in the house except to sleep. With the farm using so much electricity all the time we don't notice the extra expense of AC in the house. We just use a lot of electricity anyway

message 839: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It's 72 at 9:18am and working up to 97 this afternoon. Only cooling down to 66 tonight, but we don't have the humidity like you do Travis. It is at 46% right now. No AC here so I get up early and close up the house. Stays ok until late afternoon, then we open up and turn on the fans. Usually some slight breeze by twilight. AC at work makes it hard to want to leave some days though. Gotta go to work. Think up more errands, Travis!

message 840: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Waiting for the combine to come do my wheat then the straw has to be baled and unloaded. Eaiting for the ok to mow my 3rd cutting so that can be chopped then covered with plastic and tires. Then have to work up and seed down all my wheat ground. All this needs to be done in next 10 days. I really don't need any more errands. Just need the custom guys to show up and get to work

message 841: by Tasha (new)

Tasha We run our AC all throughout the summer but we don't set it real low. I do air out the house though when I can. A few weeks ago the mornings were so nice and cool, it was really nice having the windows open.

message 842: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Our high today in central Virginia is 85F/29C (per the accuweather app :)) 68% humidity.. Is is supposed to thunderstorm so I'm sure the humidity will get more sticky ( doesn't feel too bad out right now). We also run our A/C all summer..my husband gets warm easy so I freeze..good thing I have sweatshirts and blankets :)

I love the smell of rain, especially when it falls on really dry ground. It smells really fresh and earthy.

message 846: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love the smell of rain too. And also the smell of freshly mowed grass.

message 847: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yes! Freshly mowed grass smell is amazing!! :)

Any news on the house today, Peggy?

message 848: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks for asking Stephanie :)

It's complicated! We got some info on recent sales of similar houses in that neighbourhood, and they were sold for about 10.000 more than what our agent estimates our house. But, he bases his estimate on what the current owners paid for it in 2007, while the house next door was also sold in 2007 for more. If the current owners of 'our' house got it at a bargain back then, basing calculations on it might not be very realistic. I would look more at similar houses in the same street.

But, we thought about it and are going to put in a take it or leave it offer tomorrow. Exciting!

message 849: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yay!!! So exciting!!!!! Fingers crossed :-)
