Sarah | 18550 comments I'm never aware of the humidity levels although I generally can tell if it is higher than normal. I just checked for here and we're at between 75 - 80% humidity this week but temperatures have come down to the 20C mark. Thanks Travis for the conversion.

How exciting Peggy. Fingers crossed.

I've spent today sanding down woodwork on the boat ready to stain then varnish. I'm just not used to it so my arms are killing me and I'm knackered. No way I'll get it done in the morning before it rains so I might have to find out the tarpaulin.

message 852: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments the word "tarpaulin" reminds me of Life of Pi :)

Good luck, Peggy! It certainly exciting!

Hope it works, Stephanie!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments So exciting Peggy!

We only got a portable AC unit at home Dec 2013 after we got solar panels. Otherwise, I have never lived in a house with it. We only turn it on when it's over 35C. In summer we make money on our electricity bill with the panels, from the electricity we generate otherwise we wouldn't have it.

I still feel bad when we turn it on though. We only got it as we had Christmas at our place on a 40 degree day with ovens going all day and night and 16 people in the house. Decided that was a good tipping point.

message 856: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Peggy fingers crossed! I run my AC when needed, but I sure do appreciate my ceiling fans!!!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That was fun working 15 hours out in the heat. We finally peaked with a heat index of about39C or 102F. Worst thing is there is no beer. Nothing on this planet tastes better than an ice cold Corona with a big old chunk of lime at the end of a hot day. And I'm too tired to go to the store.

message 858: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Boo for no beer in the fridge :(
I could go for a Guiness! Mmmmmm!!!

message 859: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments The solar panel installers are supposed to come tomorrow - hopefully - after being delayed multiple times. Lots of other work has preceded this. More insulation blown into attic. Duct work. Improved door seals. Window shading on sunny south facing sides. Energy audit testing. We're part of a solar energy conversion study :)

message 861: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We put in an offer. Now we wait...

We don't have AC, but temperatures rarely get high enough here for it to be very useful. And our appartment stays quite cool during summer anyway.

Maybe you see a doctor TJ? Doesn't sound very pleasant!

I agree with Peggy, it might be worth seeing a doctor about your toe TJ. Two weeks is quite a long time for it to go without healing.

message 864: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments No beer?! That's a nightmareally Travis. I have some Corona and lime in the fridge you can have but it's a bit of a trek for a beer.

I can see why you opted for the mobile AC Rusalka. Solar panels rock!

Exciting Peggy! I hope it's accepted.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Great, Peggy! Let's wish for a big YES!

TJ, I agree that seeing a doctor is a good idea. Same thing happened to my mother 2 years ago and it ended being a fissure.
Great the solar panels are finally being installed!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Agree on the beer on a hot day thing Travis. I have Coronas, ginger beer, belgian beers, white ales, and guinness in the fridge here if you need.

Heads up. It's 12am so not happening today in the end, but I am aware of my badge lag. Should be fixed soon everyone.

message 870: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie My husband is a non beer drinker. Ever since he got sick off beer when he was younger he hasn't been able to drink it :)
I prefer the dark beer. Guinness, vanilla porter (Breckinridge is my favorite), and I had a dark beer called dew claw sweet baby Jesus (or something like that) here at a pizza place we like to go to. It was quite good :)

message 871: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm not a beer drinker but I do love guinness. That is really the only beer I will drink. I prefer wine and vodka. :)

message 872: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Just red blooded American coubtry honk mofo's around here I guess. I drink budweiser wife drinks michelob ultra. Occasionally I buy Corona or Killians Red. i don't stray from my bud often

Tasha Nothing wrong with that! :)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Stephanie - I'm the same with cider. I had a very messy last day of exams when I was 16 while drinking the cheapest cider which resulted in an ambulance being called. I tried cider again for the first time since then just 2 weeks ago.

Weirdly I don't view Guinness as a beer.

Does not sound like a fun experience that's for sure. I got sick off of Red's Apple Ale a few years ago and haven't touched it since. It really tastes good but you don't realize you have had too many until it makes you sick...at least that is how my story went :-)

message 877: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I just spent the last hour scouring my place looking for Four Past Midnight. I had pulled it out a couple of weeks ago. I can't find it anywhere. All I can find is dust. I think the ghost in the apartment must have taken it. It keeps playing practical jokes like that on me.

It's after midnight so, I shall leave off the search until morning.

message 878: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments We have pixies that hide our things Janice. It's really annoying when you know it's there somewhere but can't find it. I put a colour chart with the colours of our boat "some place safe" and I have no idea where that was so we had to get more to match up the colour.

message 879: by Peggy (last edited Aug 20, 2015 02:57AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, that happens to me too all the time. Sometimes I feel like a squirrel. As soon as I actually tidy up my desk or my house and put things away in smart places, I can never find them again...

I only started drinking beer recently, and I prefer Radler (very popular here right now, not sure if it's the same in other countries. BF says you can't call it a beer) and things like cherry beer or rose beer. The girlie stuff ;-)

I finally managed to find a date for my PhD defense! It's going to be December 15th. Long time still, I considered October but then everything would have to go to press about now, and my cover still needs to be designed and my supervisor has to check some final stuff. September and October are also going to be very busy because I'm coordinating a course for the first time, and why stress myself out unneccesarily? ;-)

We made the offer on the house yesterday and haven't heard anything back yet. Which is good, I think, at least it wasn't rejected immediately :)

Lol, same here! I couldn't find my phone charger the other week and I was so sure I knew where I had put it but it wasn't there. I did find it eventually though.

message 881: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have a very good memory and generally know where everything is so I find it extremely frustrating when I can't find something or can't remember something.

That's cool about your defence Peggy and that you feel ok with when it is now. I'd say it's definitely a good sign that you've not heard back from the agents. I wonder how long they'll leave you hanging.

message 882: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I only lose things ig I organize. I remember very well if I just set things randomly

message 883: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments A long time I'm afraid. Our agent said it could be ten days (still, I'm obsessively checking my email for news, even though I assume our agent will phone us if it's accepted or rejected), but I'm not sure if there's a rule about how long you can think about an offer. It would be wise for them to wait as long as possible, because they could get a better offer in the meantime, or they could think that we get really nervous if we have to wait long and increase our offer.

Speaking of the phone charger, I have one that I leave plugged into the USB port in my car. The other day, I went to plug in my cell phone and the cord was gone. I looked around the car and couldn't find it. But I did see two white napkins on the floor in the passenger side. Above the iPod dock, there is a closed cubby where I fold and put napkins if I've eaten fast food and have one that I don't use. You never know when they come in handy. All I can think is that I left the door unlocked and someone took the cable and opened the cubby and knocked two napkins onto the floor. There was nothing else to take, other than some coins for parking - maybe a couple of dollars.

I had almost left my cell phone in the car, but at the last second decided to take it with me. Often, I will leave my phone and purse if I'm just running in and out. I won't be doing that any more.

message 886: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Found it! I decided to give the bookcase in my bedroom one more chance to cough it up. I pulled Misery out and because the books were crammed so tightly, two other books came with it. There, behind, at the very back of the bookcase, was my missing book. How it got there, I will never know because I haven't moved any of the books in that section in a long time. Damned ghost.

message 887: by Tasha (new)

Tasha What a relief to have your D date set, Peggy! Yay! :)

message 888: by Tasha (new)

Tasha That sucks about your charger, Janice! Good thing your phone wasn't there. phew...

message 889: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Sorry to hear that your charger was stolen out of your car, Janice :-( I don't understand why people take things that don't belong to them.

Washington state ( the part where I am from) is having so many wild fires this summer. Friends of mine on facebook have been posting a lot of pictures and the air quality is just horrid due to all the fires. A friend of mine's farm is in an area where one of the fires is. So sad and scary! So far her farm is ok..they are prepared though if they have to evacuate.

message 890: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments @Janice, Great you found the book! It had to be somewhere!
Too bad about the charger. It feels horrible to know someone has opened your car and stole something.

@Stephanie, Fires are really scared. I hope it's controlled soon.

message 891: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Awful about all the wild fires. I have a cousin who is fighting forest fires in California. Dangerous work. Sad about the firefighters who lost their lives :(

message 892: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Me too, Sandra!
I heard about that as well, TJ! My heart is broken for the families :(

message 893: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I guess someone needed the charger more than I did. Still, they cost $25 and I'm going to need to buy a new one. I'm just grateful that my cell phone and purse weren't in there, and that they didn't break a window or something to get in.

Forest fires are something we have to deal with every year in my area. Firefighting is indeed a very dangerous job. Horrific that lives were lost.

Sorry to hear about your charger being stolen Janice. It seems nothing is safe these days unless it is physically nailed down!

message 895: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes annoying someone got in your car. A brand new phone of mine fell out of my bag on to the passenger seat without me noticing about ten years ago and someone smashed the window to get it. I also had someone smash a window in another of my cars to steal the tax disc which is dumb because it has the car number plate on it. Now I make sure I leave nothing of value on show in our car.

This made me literally LOL! Last week it was so much cooler here than normal. I was purposely spending more time outside because it hadn't been that cool since probably May! I was outside one evening enjoying the cooler weather and looked at my accuweather app which said it was 84F. I figured out why it felt so much cooler when I saw the humidity was only 76%. Before that we have had temps in the upper 90's with the humidity at least 90% and usually closer to 100%!

message 897: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Oh, and I don't know how people survived Mississippi summers before the invention of the air conditioner! If you enter a home in the southern US during the summer that isn't running an AC, it can only be because it is broken!

re: getting sick on certain drinks and never drinking them again: that is why I will never drink anything blue again. First time I had ever gotten drunk ended up with me puking blue. Blue curacao has been my enemy ever since!

message 899: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Mississippi can keep the humidity. You guys probably know what to do with it. I think the biggest difference is we get these high temp high humididty days in summer and then turn around and get -40°f windchills in the winter. In 6 months we fluctuate 150°f. It gets hard for the body to adapt

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Bummer when your property gets stolen. Been there numerous times. The worst is when someone breaks in your home. Such a violafion of privacy (just please never let this happen when i'm home, amen).

And yet, I've had people at least as many times go out of their way to be helpful and honest, like to return my lost pocketbook that fell from my bag, to lend a hand when i ran out of gas or had car trouble, to go out of their way to do the right thing when/where it needed to be done. Thank goodness for thesepeople!
