Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Stephanie, I was just about to come complaining here and now I see your happy carebear ;-)

It helps, thanks! :D

(still need to get it off my chest though)

I'm trying to plan a date for my PhD-defense and I thought it was going to be the 16th of December but now it turns out that too many important people can't make it so I have to change it. My prof says 'whatever you want' but my other preferred date is possible for her but not so convenient so I'm not sure if I should pick that one. She also writes that I should consider doing it in October already, but yikes that seems so soon! I need to prepare! On the other hand it would be nice to get it over with. I could also do 14th or 15th of December, which is more convenient if I want to go on a holiday the day after. Argh I don't know what to do!

And my other complaint is that friends organized a National Peggy Day for my birthday (which was in March), a surprise day out for me. We would go with two of my friends, there partners, me, and my boyfriend. It was scheduled in May but got cancelled because someone was sick, we postponed it to August, and now bf just let me know he probably has to work. The guy who was supposed to work that day all of a sudden has a family-day (do you have that? One day a year when you go do something fun with the whole family, all aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews etc) and since Rob is the chef, he has to fix it, and if he can't, he has to work.

Minor things just really, but somehow they affect me more than they should today.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Rainy here but been so dry the last 6 weeks it is a welcome sight

message 703: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Stephanie and Travis, please send rain! So hot and dry here. 40 degree Celsius and above temps daily now.

So frustrating, Peggy, when someone tells you "whatever you want," but it's actually NOT possible for them to give you that. Why do people say this so often when they can't reaaly grant it??

Yay Tasha on your daughter winning a kindle fire!! Very fun : )

message 704: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I can say as someone who grows crops that the rain maker and me aren't on that good of terms. I just take what I get.

message 705: by Kandice (last edited Aug 11, 2015 07:34AM) (new)

Kandice Awwww Peggy! I think your friend's thought was so lovely, but like Tejas Janet, wonder why people make offers they can't deliver.

Good luck with your PhD defense. I'm sure you'll do great whenever it is. Maybe it's like pulling off a band aid and the quicker the better? O_o

message 706: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I just looked at a Celsius sot Fahrenheit converter and have been whining about 90 degrees when I see your 104! Guess I'll stop.

message 707: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Peggy, if I think in my husband's experience with his PhD defense, I would say the sooner the better. He was desperate to close the whole thing off. And believe me, you know what's in your work. You've worked on it for a long time.

message 708: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm happy the care bear could help a bit, Peggy :)
I'm sorry that the defense date is changing on you :( I bet you will ace it whenever it happens though :) good luck and fingers and toes crossed for you!!
Sorry to hear your bf may have to work. I hope it all works out and he is able to join in for the festivities!!

The sun is out now here! I guess all I had to do was post some sunshine and boom, lol :)

Hope those that need the rain get some soon! We've had quite a rainy summer...a lot more than last year that I remember anyways :)

message 709: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I agree with Sandra. The sooner the better and then you can relax.

message 710: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ahw, thanks everyone!

Maybe sooner is better. And if it's late October I still have two months to prepare.

Our spring and summer have been quite dry too. I have to admit that I don't mind ;-) I hope it will rain for those who need it.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm preparing for an audit at work and it has me stressed out. I work for a construction company and we recently built a huge casino and resort. Casino's always audit their contractors at the completion of a job, so I've known it was coming, but it still stresses me. This project was a Time & Material job, which means that we bill for our actual cost plus a profit percentage. On T&M jobs you have to provide copies of invoices for every single thing billed, even a 25 cent connector; Copies of timecards and payroll reports proving who worked on the job how much we paid them; fuel for on-site equipment; etc, etc. In other words, each bill is massive. I have 7 shelves in my office with nothing but my copies of the bills. I have electronic copies of all of it except for the first 12, so I am going through and scanning those so I can submit electronic copies of everything to the auditors. So that they can go through the thousands of pages with a fine tooth comb and find mistakes or items they deem non-billable. Then I'll have to justify the charges and argue with them. I am beyond dreading it!

I only have one more bill to scan before I can start loading it all on CD's. Thankfully I have the thickest ones already done. This one is just one 6" binder and one 3" binder. It'll take me most of the afternoon to get it all scanned and organized the way I need it to be, so I had better get back to it. Lunch time is over. :(

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds stressful! When will it all be over?

message 714: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh boy, KimeyDiann! Hope the audit goes quick and they find zero things wrong :)

message 715: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Was rainy so I did paperwork. Then figured better fry up more summer squash and zuccini since they are in season thats a part of basically every meal right now. And grilled some meatloaf burgers. 2lb ground veef 2 eggs whack of bread crumbs blast of minced onions and a dose of burger seasoning. Mmm mmm. So good a cow would probably even eat them

message 716: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments You're making me hungry, Travis!

It'll be two weeks before the auditors actually get there, but we are supposed to submit everything tomorrow. Just getting everything ready is stressing me out, I can't imagine how I'll be when they actually get here. I'm actually kind of wondering if my antidepressant/anti-anxiety medication isn't working so well anymore... I seem to be very easily stressed out lately by things that shouldn't be that big of a deal. On more than one occasion recently I've felt like I could have a panic attack and I haven't had one in probably 10 years!

I'm liable to feel panicky if I am ever audited in the way you are prepping to be audited, so I bet your ok.

Good luck!

message 719: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I love this time of year to grill and grab fresh veggies out the garden. When I have the time I love to cook. Winter its crock pot creations for me. What you don't see listed is sweet corn. Grrrr coons have eaten almost all of it. Should have about 400 dozen between 3 varieties. Variety 1 is ready. I salvaged 2 dozen. Coon ate the rest. Theyve already started on the next two varieties and they wouldn't be ready for about 4 more days but they'll probably have it wiped out by then. So frustrating. Over a 2 week period I usually pick about 10-15 dozen a day. We eat aome and freeze some and then family and neighbors help themselves. Then when ours is gone the neighbor has sone ready for the next 2 weeks. Hope theirs is doing well

message 720: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Funny you should mention racoons, Travis. A friend posted this on Facebook this morning.

message 721: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments That was funny, Janice!

Travis - won't the dogs scare the coons off if you have them out at night? Love your grilling stories.

Hope it all works out for you Kimmy!

Peggy - what they all said! :0)

message 722: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh no! I'm moving today at work (from the 3rd to the 4th floor). I just put all my stuff in boxes, only to find out that the girl whose place I'm taking accidentally took her key home, there's no one else in that room today, and the spare key seems to have gone missing... And the secretary people who are always so good at solving this kind of stuff are also not here. If I want to get work done I should unpack, but I also don't feel like that. Just spent an hour getting everything into boxes!

message 723: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Kimey, I agree with. Kandice, this is a specially stressful situation and hopefully you'll feel better when it is finished.

message 724: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Peggy, wouldn't it be a good excuse to take a break for the day? You have had some tough days too.

message 725: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Loved the racoons, Janice.
Squirrels and groundhog eat all our tomato and strawberries, so I gave up...

message 726: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It would Sandra :) But I'm taking Friday and Monday off already, and I would feel very guilty if I left now.

I found something to do that was not in the boxes and now it's already almost lunch time ;-)

message 727: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I could see raccoons doing that.

Cherie they just aren't bothered by my dogs, but the sweet corn is at the end of a field of cow corn and isn't real close to the house. Either way they come and eat of my feed piles so they aren't bothered by much. Too use to us. If I borrowed my grandfathers treeing walkers might be a different story, but those dogs would tear a raccoon to pieces if they actually caught one. so no

message 728: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Urghh. That's me, Peggy. I'm that Administrator who has to fix the fact that some knobhead took their keys home for the university office, while someone has decided to feed the spare set in the last 24 hours to a rogue kangaroo. I mean, I love academics.

In other news. IT SNOWED! It sort of settled but not at the Uni only on the hills, it was at lunchtime today for 30 mins and we all went bonkers. It hardly ever snows here and was the first decent fall since 2006. Our EA was running up and down our corridor singing "Do you want to build a snowman?"

message 729: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I feel for you Rusalka! There are also supposed to be people with those keys that fit in all the doors, like the cleaners. The secretary suggested that, but then I can't lock up behind me when I leave for home. I now arranged that I can keep those moving boxes until next week (am not here from Thursday till Monday) and I'll move then. The colleague who took the key will bring it back on Friday.

It must be very special to have snow if it's so rare. I read on the news a couple of weeks ago that it snowed on Tasmania, and quite a lot. I think the news-article said that it hadn't happened since 2005 or 2006, and there was even snow on the beaches, which hadn't occured since 1986.

message 730: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments All our admins have master keys for that exact reason. But glad it's all worked out for you.

The Tassie one was pretty crazy. It settled in Hobart so much so they cancelled everything for the day. Snow is pretty common in certain places (over a certain altitude) but you're right, it was amazing in Hobart as it's a city (so warmer due to houses and cars and such) and it was down to the sea. Pretty stunning.

We're reasonably high up here in Canberra (850-650m) but the heat of the city means it never settles. Also the way the hills are and it's usually too cold so we just freeze. so was very cool (hah!).

Too bad Travis. Even planting the sweet corn closer to the house is no solution either then. Wild life - you gotta lovem, but really hate that they can't share what you want too. I hope you get more of your other two sweet corn varities before the critters do.

message 733: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Trust me, Rusalka - you wouldn't like driving around on icy roads, if it fell and hung around long enough. I like it up on the mountains just fine.

message 734: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Love snow...as long as I don't have to go anywhere that is :)

message 735: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Snow is more and more infrequent in central Texas. I wish I had a chance to get sick of it some time, LOL.

My husband and I were in NYC a few years back in early December when it snowed a good bit. We walked thru Central Park and it was so amazingly beautiful. Then 2 days later, it was all pretty much melted and gone.

message 736: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Snow is a four letter word. It's getting darker earlier and earlier these days and that only leads to one thing... no two. 1) Snow 2) Higher electrical bills.

message 737: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments 3) Heating oil bill.

message 739: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yay! Off work now for 2 weeks. Need to work out what I need to do on the boat. Jobs that I can do without help as my partner is still working. I also have my accounts and tax return to do and some coursework. I might take it a bit easy today though - ease myself in gently like. We both have some time off planned together mid September and we're taking our boat up the other end of the canal. We started looking at our plan last night.

There is supposed to be a meteor shower tonight. I never have much luck spotting them. I guess I'm not looking in the right place. I've downloaded a star gazing app for my phone so hopefully that might help. But it's cloudy at the moment so that may be a problem later.

message 740: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We just went for a house viewing and we both loved it! We want to live there.

But, same story as with the previous house, the one we just missed out on. This one was reduced in price quite a lot, and now it's popular. Several people have viewed it in the past days, and one person is going for a second viewing next week. Our real estate agent, the one who would come with us for a second viewing, is on holiday and I just called the company and now I have to wait until she calls me back sometime. But I feel we need to hurry, like we need to do a second viewing tomorrow or Saturday already and then decide right away. This is stressful!

message 741: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Enjoy your holiday Sarah!

The meteor shower was here last night (but I think coming night as well). I forgot to watch. The 'busiest' hour was 3am or 4am though, so I was asleep anyway.

message 742: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thanks Sarah I'd forgotten about the meteor shower and figured I'd missed it.

Thanks Peggy for mentioning about 4am seeing as it was 4:30 when I read it I went outside. Meteors all over the place.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Travis :D

In total contrast with my usual self I'm being pro-active and not quietly waiting until someone contacts me. I phoned (I hate making phonecalls to companies or people I don't know) another real estate agent (same company, other location), explained the situation and now they will help us. As we speak he is trying to make an appointment for a second viewing on Monday, one day before the other planned viewing (I feel a bit guilty about that). Hope it works out with the selling agent.

Needless to say I'm not getting any work done today. But I do feel a little bit proud of myself!

We missed the meteor shower as it was really cloudy. Again! :(

I wouldn't feel bad about viewing a day before the other people at all. Nothing wrong about that in my book! All's fair in house hunting :-)
