Nina | 6069 comments No, 11.22,63 isn't scarey; but it is weird. The main character is trying to stop the JFK assasination by going back in time to 1958. The part that is somewhat interesting is all the referrals to the fifties. Some of them seemed familiar and some not so much. Oh well, just a book.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's pouring rain here this morning. It started coming down hard enough to wake me at 4am. It's 6:15 now & the dogs are begging for breakfast. I'm going to finish up here, feed them & get the grocery shopping done before I do the horses.

Marg is really sick again & the place is a disaster. I really need to vacuum, wrap presents, cancel the vets for Monday, & get the clothes washed. My underwear drawer (which usually fills itself automatically) is empty.

Poor Marg. She's running a fever again & coughing so hard. She's barely capable of watching TV. Miserable. I hope this round of antibiotics & 2 solid weeks of rest will fix her.

Thanks, Nina. I see that 431 Goodreads members put the book on their "horror" shelf. See the page showing the various shelves for the book entitled 11/22/63:

Jim, I'm sorry to hear that Marg isn't doing well. Sending good thoughts your way for a quick recovery.

Meanwhile, skip the vacuuming! You really need to prioritize at this point! Skip the wrapping too! Put each gift in a decorative gift bag like the ones they sell at the Dollar Store. I save them for such emergencies.

Or just use plain paper bags. Everyone will understand!

Nina | 6069 comments Joy H. wrote: "We have a foot of snow here! It came down a night or so ago. Doesn't seem like spring at all!"Joy, I assume you will have a White Christmas. Why not watch the old movie by the same name? Well, maybe that is not so easy if you don't already have it on hand. They are predicting snow here but so far none has appeared.

Nina | 6069 comments Can I tell my goodread friends a couple of my family Christmas stories/December 2013? My husband who is eighty seven years old made twenty five tiny wooden sleds for the classmates in our great grandson's class(fourth grade) to decorate. The little boy's grandmother is a retired elementary school art teacher. She stained the sleds and went to school and told the children a few hints on decorating and adding their names. She reported they loved them. Some of the mother's at the school said their children were never so excited over their computer games as they were over this project. I thought that encouraging. Other story; In the first grade at this school, the students, including our great granddaughter, Chloe, were allowed to ask a parent or grandparent to have a Christmas lunch with them and also they could ask one other little friend from class. Chloe asked if she could please have two little friends as she wanted the little girl in the wheelchair as her guest and also a new little girl to the class who so far had no friends. Her request was granted. Have a Merry one/love nina

Nina, that's a good idea. At Netfix it's streamable:
http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/600...
It's on my Netflix "List".

The other night I watched Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" (1951) on the TCM Channel. I also watched the 1970 version with Albert Finney, which was a musical version called "Scrooge". It was wonderful!

There's a lovely song called "Happiness" in the 1970 movie, "Scrooge".
You can hear it at YouTube (3 different versions):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYyjx...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO7SB...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaxcQ...
(At the last link above, the song starts about 6 minutes
and 45 seconds into the video.)

Nina, that was a grand idea about the sleds! Kudos to your husband! 87 years old! WOW!

The story about your great granddaughter, Chloe, is very heart-warming. She must be a very thoughtful person!

message 961: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's still 62 degrees out. The temp in the house went up to 73 & I had to open doors & windows. This on the Winter Solstice. Typical Kentucky weather. Lots of rain today, but that meant I got all the indoor chores done. Grocery shopping, all dishes, clothes & floors cleaned, etc.. I may yet get some time in the shop tomorrow.

message 962: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sleet then snow on top of it tonight and predicting below zero on Christmas Eve. A few days ago in the sixties. It is a miracle we aren't all sick from this changeable weather..Grrr. Now I sound like the Grinch.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, you are amazing. Take some time to rest please.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, stay well... in spite of the weather. Take care of yourself. Same goes for Jim!

message 965: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Quite a storm last night. The big wood locker on the back deck got blown over, electric, landline phone, & Dish all went out. Electric back on. Dish to be here tomorrow (looks like the end of it got messed up). AT&T say they'll show by Friday. FFS. What service.

I'm guessing the woods will be a wreck since we've had days of rain. As soon as it is light & I can feed the horses, the dogs & I will inspect the fence lines. I'm sure I'll have a lot to clean up -- later. Today will be the minimum to keep everyone in. Josh is here now, but leaving by 9am, so I do have some help for the first part.

message 966: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Josh Stump & I got the locker back up. If he wasn't here, I don't think I could have done it myself. Just too heavy. We walked the fence lines. Only 1 branch down on it & that didn't even knock the staple loose. Will require a chainsaw. Inside the woods is another matter. At least a few hours of work with both chainsaws to clear the paths. I fixed our Dish antenna, too. Just had the end blown out of it. Slipped it back in & all is well. Looks like the landline phone is the only real casualty.

It's pretty amazing how wind shear works. Lighter stuff on the porch right next to the locker never budged. For instance, the cushions on the chairs are still in place. 3' away, the locker that took all that 2 of us had to set back upright, was knocked down.

Marg is doing better. Came back from the walk about & found her trying to cook her own egg sandwich. She was running out of steam, so I made it for her. She's feeling too much better & not staying put. Grrr. Off to do the horses & goats.

message 967: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, it's a good thing Josh was there! You had quite a storm! You must be exhausted putting everything right.

Glad Marg is feeling better but I hope she takes it easy.

Nina | 6069 comments My daughter who lives in North Idaho says she can't remember a more depressing January. She complains that the sky just sits there dreary day after dreary day and she is getting claustrophia..Spring wherefore art thou?

message 974: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're in the negatives again this morning. Only -1 when I left, but it usually gets a bit colder by the time Marg gets up. Yesterday it was -3 then, 0 when I got up. It was 13 when I got home & back into the single digits by the time we finished feeding last night. Brrr! I'm tired of this!!!

Tomorrow, we're supposed to get above freezing for a while & stay a bit warmer until for a week & then do a repeat of today.
:-(

message 975: by Werner (new)

Werner Our temperature here is a balmy 22 degrees. :-) (But our outdoor thermometer catches a lot of direct sunlight, which tends to make it read a bit high.) Before Barb and I went to bed last night, it was 8 degrees, according to the Weather Channel. It snowed most of the day and night yesterday as well, and was cold enough by late afternoon/evening that it lay; so the Mercer County schools are closed again today, and BC operating on a two-hour delayed schedule.

message 976: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Once long ago I met a lady from Buffalo NY who had recently moved to our area and she said, "Why does the sun shine so brilliantly here yet when you step outside it is so cold?" She's right about that; mostly it is sunshine throughout the winter even when it's the coldest.

message 977: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Have you heard about the snowstorm troubles in Atlanta, GA?
http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/29/us/wint...
See the video clips. What a mess!

message 978: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's rough for people in the south to get hit with the cold. It was 25 when I went out for lunch. The sun is out, so it feels nice when out of the wind. The wind is cutting, though.

message 979: by Werner (new)

Werner Joy, the Weather Channel is one of Barb's favorite channels, so she's been hearing a lot of coverage about the Atlanta snowstorm. Their airport is normally the busiest in the world, but nearly 2,000 flights were cancelled there yesterday because of the weather. She says traffic was backed up for hours on the roads; one couple was trying to reach a hospital because the woman was going into labor, and a cop finally delivered the little one right there in the car.

message 980: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 29, 2014 01:12PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, the south isn't equipped to deal with such storms. But Atlanta should not have advised people to leave work and school at the same time, causing traffic jams. Also, the schools should have been closed.

It was a shame that the lady had to give birth in a car. I worry about my DIL whose baby is due on Feb. 5 and is to be delivered in NYC. Hope the weather won't cause problems. A week or so ago NYC had a foot of snow.

message 981: by Nina (last edited Jan 29, 2014 01:29PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments In spite of our cold weather we've had no snow. Hope the weather in NY improves for the new expected baby's arrival.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thank you, Nina. We're down to the wire now. I sent my son and DIL the following sign in an email: http://sd.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk/i/ke... - lol

message 983: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I love the sign.

message 984: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nice sign. We don't have much snow left either, just cold. It's supposed to peek above freezing tomorrow. Yay!

A friend of mine in the UK says they're drowning. Way too much rain.

message 985: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments 13°F here. Wish WE would see some temps above freezing!

message 986: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) They're calling for the 50's on Saturday, but a lot of rain. We're going to turn into a swamp, but at least it should help get down in & thaw the ground where the ice has to be closing in on my pipes. Of course, we'll have to really watch the horse's feet. Chip & Indy were already fighting practically chronic cases of thrush before the freeze. I'd rather deal with that than frozen pipes. I got the goats' feet trimmed the other day, so they're good to go.

message 987: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Werner, your wife's preference for the Weather Channel reminds me of the character in the British series(one of my very favorites, starring Judi Dench as a young woman) who always was quoting the Channel's weather. She was great.

message 988: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, Barb quotes our Weather Channel quite a bit, too. I don't need to watch it myself; she keeps me updated. :-)

message 989: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Things are looking up. The current temp is 22°F! We can turn off the trickle. :)

message 990: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Freezing drizzle and a funeral of a friend tomorrow, so not a good friday. Better news came from a dearly loved granddaughter in Vietnam. She teaches English and Poetry in High School. Always a treat to hear from her and she sent a darling little wooden handled stamper with my name and a teacup design. Joy, I thougt the acting was good in "Blue Jasmine," but wasn't thrilled with the movie. Odd ending.

message 991: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 30, 2014 03:23PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I send my condolences on your friend's passing.

What a lovely and thoughtful gift from your granddaughter!

As for the ending of "Blue Jasmine", I agree with you. It was odd. It seemed there was no resolution except for the fact that (view spoiler) But, IMO, that ending was too sudden and didn't give any obvious closure to the story, at least until you thought about it a while and accepted it.

Nina, I hope you don't mind but I will repeat the relevant part of this post in the movie section.

Werner As I was walking home from my daughter's house yesterday morning, the temperature was 19.9 degrees; I doubt if it's warmed up significantly at any point since, and no doubt got colder at times. Yesterday evening, it started snowing heavily, and still is; I'd estimate the depth to be easily 5-6 inches. Bluefield College is closed for the day (yesterday it closed early as well), and I expect that the public schools in both Tazewell and Mercer counties are closed too.

message 995: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have snow here too, Werner. Lots of school closings.

Temp is 30°F, which is high compared to our recent near-zero temps.

This has been such a rough winter and it's affecting such a large part of the country. Everyone is sick of it by now!

message 996: by Werner (last edited Feb 14, 2014 07:07AM) (new)

Werner Joy wrote: "Everyone is sick of it by now!" You got that right!

It's no longer snowing here this morning, and the sun is shining gloriously. But we're looking out the windows at a VERY white, cold world, and BC is closed again today.

message 997: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner, I wish OUR sun would shine here! The temp is 29°F, not too bad considering.

Yes, it's VERY WHITE here too! The accumulated snow in our backyard is almost 2 feet minus a few inches. I think we got about a foot of it yesterday and last night. We're waiting to hear from the fellow who does our snow-blowing. Until he comes we will receive no mail or packages.

message 998: by Werner (new)

Werner Bluefield College is on spring break this week, so I'm on my day shift schedule. It's been snowing here for some time, (though it doesn't seem to be at the moment) as part of an expected winter storm system. The Mercer County schools are closed, and BC won't open until noon.

message 999: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Rough, rough winter!!! More on its way! :-(

message 1000: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm at home today due to the weather. We only got 1/4" of ice with sleet & a couple of inches of snow on top of it. It was 12 when I got up this morning & it finally hit 15 when I went out to plow the lane at 10am. Still not warm enough for the salt to melt the ice. The roads, including the Interstates, were all snow covered this morning. Our road still is & slick judging by the people fishtailing up & down it. Most seem to be staying in, though. I am.
