You can bring a light jacket or sweater with you into the store, Joy, and switch once inside.

So when I get into the store, I usually take off my warm down coat and pile it into my shopping cart. That's why I have to make sure I wear decent clothes under my coat. LOL (although at Walmart it doesn't matter what I look like! LOL) Ain't life grand! :)

No matter what the prediction...
"You Can Never Hold Back Spring".
From a song sung on a Tom Waits album.

The song originally appeared in the 2005 Roberto Benigni film "The Tiger and the Snow".

I don't see why not. Good idea, Joy. I don't have anything to do with cars, so I don't think of these things.
I agree with you Werner, the Weather Channel is right...eventually the weather they predicted will get here.

I've been buying after-market remote starters ever since I had a 91 Sable manifold gasket go, it cost a fortune to replace. I do a LOT of very short trips in winter, ymca, store etc. The car never has a chance to warm up. So I usually start the car in the morning from my house with the remote as I'm getting dressed. I generally don't carry the starter fob with me unless I know I'll want to use it. In the past there was danger of the starter not disengaging from the main gear and causing damage, but I think they're much safer now, especially if you have a reputable vendor install it. I've been using Boomer McCloud next to KMart in Queensbury. With the Forester they demanded my valet key for it to work, they bury it inside under the dash somewhere. Also with this fob you have to click the button TWICE, so there's less danger of pressing button in your pocket by accident. And with the Forester a warmup at zero temperature really costs gas! It's a 2.5 litre engine but when cold it's THIRSTY! I try to remember to turn the defroster full blast when I park the car at night so the windows will at least start to defrost before I have to start scraping frost in the AM.

Earl, thanks for the info. Yes, I guess that the gas-cost (of warming up the car ahead of time) has to be considered. There's always a down-side. :)

----------
I think the cost of gas warming up a car is pretty negligible. People get weird ideas about gas expenses until they sit down & do some comparative math.
- With fuel injection, cars don't use much more gas to start than they use to idle.
- Idling does use some gas, but about 1/2 gallon for every 1/2 hour. That's about $1.50, far less than people pay for a cup of coffee. 5 or 10 minutes of idling is a couple of bits & can add a LOT of comfort & ease. Well worth it to me at times.
- Excessive idling can clog up your catalytic converter & leave moisture in the exhaust to corrode it, but you have to do a lot of regularly to be a real problem. Those of us who do it a couple of dozen times a year won't have any issue.

Nina, about trading places, there's a saying about keeping one's own troubles rather than trading them for someone else's troubles. The idea is that we know our own but we don't know the other. It's better to know. Is anyone familiar with that saying?

Yes, lots of wind here. Dog kept barking at the noise. :)

Thanks for the info, Jim. Ed and I were just talking about that. I'll pass on your info to him.

Ah! Yes, Jackie, that's the expression I was trying to bring to mind. Thanks!!!
I'm going to file that with my quotes. Hmmm, have to figure out which category to put it in. I guess I'll file it under "TROUBLE (DIFFICULTIES)-ADVERSITY". Can't think of any other place for it.
Found it online:
“Better the Devil you know than the Devil you don't.” ---Proverb

Yes, even in the summer we have the clothing problem when it comes to feeling hot or cold. I keep a little shrug-type sweater in my pocketbook during the summer. I use it when the AC makes places too chilly. (I have a very big pocketbook! lol)

Well, learning to card is on my list of things to do & I need to wash Speedy's fur. I guess I can stay occupied for the day.
Marg & Erin are going to go look at a pony today. He's a large pony, hopefully another Chip or Patches. (The latter was one of the best ponies we've ever had, but he died 10 or 15 years ago. Just old age & then suddenly got some sort of cancer. In less than a week from when Mom & Marg first noticed he had some lumps, they blew up & cut off his breathing badly enough that we had to put him down.)
If this new pony works out, Marg will probably get rid of Cutter. He's more horse than either of us needs now. He's probably more suited to me, if I wanted to show & hunt him. I don't.

Jim, I can't imagine carding or spinning. I have several clothing-repair-jobs that require simple hand-sewing and I'm YEARS behind on those tasks. So you can see that that sort of thing isn't up my alley. :)
Jim, as for your possible new pony, that sounds like fun to hear about. A new personality to hear about! Sorry that Cutter might be leaving you. Hope he gets a good home. Do you think he'll be home-sick when the change is made? It must be hard to give up an animal-friend.

My mother-in-law was fantastic at sewing & showed Marg all sorts of things, but Marg has this issue with knots. She can magically untie the worst tangles you've ever seen. Unfortunately, this touch extends to making knots, too. Not a one, no matter how hard she tries, will stay tied. Anything she sews falls apart almost instantly. The one time Marg had to sew a patch on for one of the kids (I had a broken bone in my hand, I think.) it started to fall off halfway through the first meeting, so she stapled it.
;-)
I decided to card the Alpaca fur I had & try some of it. Wow! It's going great, if slow. The hand carders the friend gave me are working much better than the pair I bought - the teeth are a little bigger & lighter. The rolags I create that way are spinning up much nicer than the commercial roving which is done with a drum carder. The hairs in the commercial roving all go in one long straight tail. A rolag combs all the hairs, but then I roll them into a tube, so the hairs are at 90 degrees to the yarn. It makes it much easier for me to control how much gets spun.
I wouldn't count Cutter out too soon. I've never noticed that Marg has any talent in getting rid of animals, but she certainly can collect them.
:-P

About sewing experiences, I once made a cotton bathrobe for Eddie. When I washed it, the sleeves came off. :)

One time, when I was a teen-ager, I knitted myself a vest. By the time I finished it, I had grown out of it! :)

It's snowing again & supposed to keep snowing on & off for the next 24 hours. They're saying we might get up to 4", but likely just 1 to 2. At least I should have all day Sunday to clean up the lane & all.
The temperature is up to 20 & there isn't much wind, thankfully.

Do you often get snow in KY, Jim?

I'm going to have to clear the apron of the driveway this morning & get some salt on it. Marg had trouble getting back in with the car last night. The snow squished into ice. Today we're going to get the new pony with the horse trailer, so I need it clear. A trailer makes it very tough, even with 4WD.

PS-I guess you really don't have to worry about getting deep snow which stays around.

Just found the following quote which echoes the one above:
"Keep what you have got; the known evil is best."
---Titus Maccius Plautus (254-184 BC) _Trinummus_, I, 2, l. 25
PS-I just noticed that the word "devil" has the word "evil" inside it. :)

according to: "Current conditions at Glens Falls, Warren County Airport" shown at the following website:
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....
Our window thermometer reads: -8F.
The recent blizzard brought us about 9 inches of snow, more or less. We weren't hit as hard as other areas in the East.

We had a very dry year last year and this looks like more of the same!

MaryJL, I know so little about Omaha, Nebraska! I thought Johnny Carson was from Nebraska but Wiki says he was born in Iowa and moved to Nebraska when he was 8 years old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_c...
PS-And Dick Cavett was born in Nebraska!
Two of my favorite entertainers, Carson & Cavett!
