Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Trouble with winter is that when I go shopping, I dress for cold weather but then I'm overdressed in the stores and get overheated. No happy medium. :-(

message 852: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Everyone yells at me because I wear a light jacket in the winter, but the way I see it is, I'm in a warm car, then in a warm store. I don't need a heavy winter coat unless I'm walking the dog or otherwise exposed to the cold. One minute from parking lot to store is not that cold, not enough to warrant a heavy coat that will make me sweat in the store.

You can bring a light jacket or sweater with you into the store, Joy, and switch once inside.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I hate that freezing walk in the parking lot and the cold car before it warms up!

So when I get into the store, I usually take off my warm down coat and pile it into my shopping cart. That's why I have to make sure I wear decent clothes under my coat. LOL (although at Walmart it doesn't matter what I look like! LOL) Ain't life grand! :)

message 854: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Ah, that why I have my guys on warm up duty, lol

message 855: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments LOL - One of these days we'll get a car you can heat up ahead of time by remote control, before you go outside.

message 856: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments They have those, remote starters, it'll start the car and warm up the engine....but we need a switch that will turn on the heat or AC.

message 857: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Can't the car be set for the heat to go on when the motor starts?

message 858: by Werner (new)

Werner Barb watches the Weather Channel religiously, and takes its predictions quite seriously. I don't, so much; and I've often told her I don't think it's much improvement over the Delphic oracle. :-) The latter was noted for hedging predictions in riddling answers that could be taken in different ways. The Weather Channel hedges its predictions in percentage chances, like "There's a 75% chance it may rain tomorrow!" (And 25% chance that it won't, so they're "correct" either way. :-) ) In other words, it'll either rain or it won't. I knew that before I turned the TV on. :-)

I don't see why not. Good idea, Joy. I don't have anything to do with cars, so I don't think of these things.

I agree with you Werner, the Weather Channel is right...eventually the weather they predicted will get here.

Earl (read_for_entertainment) | 375 comments Jackie wrote: "They have those, remote starters, it'll start the car and warm up the engine....but we need a switch that will turn on the heat or AC."

I've been buying after-market remote starters ever since I had a 91 Sable manifold gasket go, it cost a fortune to replace. I do a LOT of very short trips in winter, ymca, store etc. The car never has a chance to warm up. So I usually start the car in the morning from my house with the remote as I'm getting dressed. I generally don't carry the starter fob with me unless I know I'll want to use it. In the past there was danger of the starter not disengaging from the main gear and causing damage, but I think they're much safer now, especially if you have a reputable vendor install it. I've been using Boomer McCloud next to KMart in Queensbury. With the Forester they demanded my valet key for it to work, they bury it inside under the dash somewhere. Also with this fob you have to click the button TWICE, so there's less danger of pressing button in your pocket by accident. And with the Forester a warmup at zero temperature really costs gas! It's a 2.5 litre engine but when cold it's THIRSTY! I try to remember to turn the defroster full blast when I park the car at night so the windows will at least start to defrost before I have to start scraping frost in the AM.

Earl, thanks for the info. Yes, I guess that the gas-cost (of warming up the car ahead of time) has to be considered. There's always a down-side. :)

Nina | 6069 comments One week of our crazy weather; 76 degrees on Monday and they are predeicting 3 degrees at night on Friday. Want to trade places with me?

message 866: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Snowing and windy right now.

message 867: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't need to swap, Nina. Yesterday morning 67, this morning 27 with snow.

----------

I think the cost of gas warming up a car is pretty negligible. People get weird ideas about gas expenses until they sit down & do some comparative math.
- With fuel injection, cars don't use much more gas to start than they use to idle.
- Idling does use some gas, but about 1/2 gallon for every 1/2 hour. That's about $1.50, far less than people pay for a cup of coffee. 5 or 10 minutes of idling is a couple of bits & can add a LOT of comfort & ease. Well worth it to me at times.
- Excessive idling can clog up your catalytic converter & leave moisture in the exhaust to corrode it, but you have to do a lot of regularly to be a real problem. Those of us who do it a couple of dozen times a year won't have any issue.

message 868: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim's getting it all, weatherwise. lol

Nina, about trading places, there's a saying about keeping one's own troubles rather than trading them for someone else's troubles. The idea is that we know our own but we don't know the other. It's better to know. Is anyone familiar with that saying?

I'm going to file that with my quotes. Hmmm, have to figure out which category to put it in. I guess I'll file it under "TROUBLE (DIFFICULTIES)-ADVERSITY". Can't think of any other place for it.

Found it online:

But, I continue to do so as you aay, it's cold when we leave the house.

Nina | 6069 comments I also have the problem of being hot in the car before it cools off with air conditoning either going or ocming back from the grocery store and I freeze in there so I must wear a sweater in sweltering heat.

Yes, even in the summer we have the clothing problem when it comes to feeling hot or cold. I keep a little shrug-type sweater in my pocketbook during the summer. I use it when the AC makes places too chilly. (I have a very big pocketbook! lol)

message 877: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm taking the day off of work. We have a few inches of snow blowing around in 9 degrees. The roads are horrible since they plowed & salted around midnight, then quit. The snow has drifted back over & half the snow that melted has re-frozen as black ice under it & by itself. Schools are closed.

message 878: by Werner (new)

Werner Jim, the weather here is very similar to yours; it snowed significantly both yesterday and last night, and Barb just said the temperature is 16 degrees. Schools are closed in Mercer County (they were yesterday, too, though BC wasn't), and McDonald's business is really down; they sent Barb home early yesterday, and told her not to come in today. Our car doors froze shut twice yesterday; we haven't had to try them yet today. It's a good day to stay inside and read! :-)

message 879: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I agree with staying home right now. With the sun out, I can really see the roads & the news says it's pretty much a nightmare out there. Unfortunately, I'm out of pre-carded roving, so I want to go into town & pick some up. I do have a couple of big bags of Alpaca wool, a bunch from Speedy, & some of Pixie's. I guess I'll see if I can card out some of that, but my spinning skills aren't up to spinning that yet. I'm basically wasting what I spin because it isn't good enough to use.

Well, learning to card is on my list of things to do & I need to wash Speedy's fur. I guess I can stay occupied for the day.

Marg & Erin are going to go look at a pony today. He's a large pony, hopefully another Chip or Patches. (The latter was one of the best ponies we've ever had, but he died 10 or 15 years ago. Just old age & then suddenly got some sort of cancer. In less than a week from when Mom & Marg first noticed he had some lumps, they blew up & cut off his breathing badly enough that we had to put him down.)

If this new pony works out, Marg will probably get rid of Cutter. He's more horse than either of us needs now. He's probably more suited to me, if I wanted to show & hunt him. I don't.

message 880: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Werner and Jim, good luck with that bad weather. Stay safe.

Jim, I can't imagine carding or spinning. I have several clothing-repair-jobs that require simple hand-sewing and I'm YEARS behind on those tasks. So you can see that that sort of thing isn't up my alley. :)

Jim, as for your possible new pony, that sounds like fun to hear about. A new personality to hear about! Sorry that Cutter might be leaving you. Hope he gets a good home. Do you think he'll be home-sick when the change is made? It must be hard to give up an animal-friend.

message 881: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Speaking of animals, I've started a new topic about Feral Cats. See the thread at:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

message 882: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's funny, Joy. I do all the mending in our house, always have. I have my grandmother's Singer sewing machine & made the sheer curtains I have in my bedroom. I'm not great at sewing, but good enough which is all I need.

My mother-in-law was fantastic at sewing & showed Marg all sorts of things, but Marg has this issue with knots. She can magically untie the worst tangles you've ever seen. Unfortunately, this touch extends to making knots, too. Not a one, no matter how hard she tries, will stay tied. Anything she sews falls apart almost instantly. The one time Marg had to sew a patch on for one of the kids (I had a broken bone in my hand, I think.) it started to fall off halfway through the first meeting, so she stapled it.
;-)

I decided to card the Alpaca fur I had & try some of it. Wow! It's going great, if slow. The hand carders the friend gave me are working much better than the pair I bought - the teeth are a little bigger & lighter. The rolags I create that way are spinning up much nicer than the commercial roving which is done with a drum carder. The hairs in the commercial roving all go in one long straight tail. A rolag combs all the hairs, but then I roll them into a tube, so the hairs are at 90 degrees to the yarn. It makes it much easier for me to control how much gets spun.

I wouldn't count Cutter out too soon. I've never noticed that Marg has any talent in getting rid of animals, but she certainly can collect them.
:-P

message 883: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, Your last sentence concerning Marg and her getting rid of animals made me smile as it reminded me of my youngest daughter who owned a Great Dane who became incontinent and of course, she who is a small person was carryng down the deck steps at night until he finally died. This is the main reason she opted for a jack Russell the next time.

message 884: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It doesn't look as if we are going to get that other pony. He's a Welsh cross, but doesn't quite seem to be what Marg wants. I guess Cutter is safe for a while anyway. Even if she does get him, he's only 3.5 years old & hasn't been broken yet.

message 885: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Keep us posted about your horses and ponies, Jim. Goats too. :)

About sewing experiences, I once made a cotton bathrobe for Eddie. When I washed it, the sleeves came off. :)

message 886: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I once took knitting lessons but before they were finished I tried knitting a tie for my husband and when I gave it to him and he tried it on, it came down below his belt and he had to fold it over. I needed help to undo my mistake.

message 887: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I hated having to undo my knitting mistakes.

One time, when I was a teen-ager, I knitted myself a vest. By the time I finished it, I had grown out of it! :)

message 888: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've never tried knitting such ambitious projects as a tie or a vest. Scarves & hats seem to be about all I can handle. I lose track of where I am too easily.

It's snowing again & supposed to keep snowing on & off for the next 24 hours. They're saying we might get up to 4", but likely just 1 to 2. At least I should have all day Sunday to clean up the lane & all.

The temperature is up to 20 & there isn't much wind, thankfully.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments When I was in my teens, I started knitting an argyle sweater. (Lots of different color bobbins are used for the different color diamond shapes.) When I got to the second row of diamonds, I realized I had forgotten to change the colors. It seemed like too much work to pull all stitches out. So I quit. As I look back, I was pretty ambitious as a teen-ager. Once, as a teenager, I even wallpapered my own bedroom! Those days are all gone forever. :)

Do you often get snow in KY, Jim?

message 890: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We get snow a few times each winter. It doesn't stick around too long, though. Our temperatures bounce around too much. Yesterday it started out in the teens & got just above freezing for a couple of hours.

I'm going to have to clear the apron of the driveway this morning & get some salt on it. Marg had trouble getting back in with the car last night. The snow squished into ice. Today we're going to get the new pony with the horse trailer, so I need it clear. A trailer makes it very tough, even with 4WD.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, so you're going to get the new pony, after all! I thought you had decided not to get it. What will you name him? Tell us all about him. I wonder if Chip will be jealous. Do horses get jealous? Dogs definitely do!

PS-I guess you really don't have to worry about getting deep snow which stays around.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I went to the library last night for their book discussion. There were piles of snow, slush, and puddles along all the curbs. Very messy. Hard getting in and out of the car and stepping up to the sidewalk from the street and vice-versa. I should have worn old shoes or waterproof boots.
