Unless you count the one 10 minutes from me where you could get your bras signed by Katie Price... :(
She completely took over the whole shopping center.

Congratulations on your blogoversary!

How are you doing after the typhoon? How are things by you?

Greta (goodreadsgreta) | 4545 comments I went to a panel discussion with Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs and an audience member asked them about how their experiences with their fans has been.

Ransom Riggs said he never had a more awesome experience with his fans than he did in the Phillipines. Made me think of you Jona :)

Manila, our capital, was not hit by the typhoon. But our provinces in the southern part really suffered. We are grieving whenever we watch the news, houses were destroyed, there are no food and shelter. It felt like watching World War Z. :( I mean, people are stealing food and gasoline because there are no sources available. I'm not sure how many people died, 500 plus I think, but there are many who weren't found yet. :(

I just read the news, my goodness....I never thought the impact will be like that. It reminds me of 2005 Tsunami that happened in one of provinces in Indonesia. My prayer with your country, Jona.

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Sarah wrote: "I read them ages ago. the show doesn't really follow the books though."

It really doesn't.
Apart from characters names, it's completely different.

message 3573: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90920 comments Mod
the characters aren't even like the books. I think Elena is a blonde cheerleader in the books, and the most popular girl in the school.

message 3574: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments Bonnie looks completely different to what she is in the books.
The one that plays Bonnie would have made the PERFECT Merideth.

Hannelore wrote: "Oh okay. Because my question was how much you can see of the series if you have read the first series and the firs"

I don't think it really matters, the books and tv show are so different, that it doesn't really matter if you've read the books. in fact you will go through the tv show saying 'that never happened', 'damon would never do that', 'where is ....' etc.
they are like two totally different things, not like harry potter which pretty much follows the storyline of the books.

the secret circle is very similar also, the tv show is not much like the books at all. they haven't even bothered to use all the characters in the tv show. in the book the coven is 12 people, on the tv show it's only 6! That really annoyed me.

message 3580: by Tati (new)

Tati Just came back from a bookstore. It was quite depressing...

I hardly ever buy translations. Oddly, importing books in English is cheaper (and faster) than waiting for the translation. But today, I decided to browse the books in Portuguese, and the change of titles in translation was astonishing.

For instance, Nightshade, by Andrea Cremer, became Under the Moonlight. The sequel, Wolfsbane, became Blood Moon...

message 3581: by Tati (new)

Tati The Flirt?! Where did that come from?! I can't tell you about Bloodrose, as it hasn't come out in Portuguese yet. But those titles relating to the moon really bummed me, as the moon has absolutely no role in the story.

Another thing that seriously annoys me is when they translate characters' names. For instance, James Potter became Tiago Potter in Portuguese.

message 3585: by Mei (new)

Mei (meijey) | 3810 comments I really hate it when someone borrows a book from me and when they return it, it's like the book has been used for 5 years! The cover's worn, there are folds and white lines. Didn't even said sorry or anything of some sort :(

message 3586: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments I hate that too.
I lent my aunt a book a couple of years ago, and it came back with no cover, badly cracked spine, and dog eared pages. :(
I've never let her borrow any more since.

message 3587: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90920 comments Mod
I lent out one that looked like it did New. Came back looking like a dog had chewed on it. Didn't lend her the rest of the series! People wouldn't do that if you lent them clothes or tools or something, why do they think it's okay to do that with books?!

message 3588: by Mei (new)

Mei (meijey) | 3810 comments I know! Can't they just be thankful they were lent, for free, and the least they can do is return it the state it was in before they borrowed, as a way of saying thanks?

She said she'll replace it. But I doubt that would happen. Now she got a hold of another book of mine. And the worse is the one I lent it to, lend it to her! That's very rude. I wasn't informed. I never wanted to lend her and now this happens :(

message 3589: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90920 comments Mod
That's really unfair. I only lend books that are already messed up now, as the only person i trust not to destroy them is my dad. my friend never replaced my copy that she wrecked either, even though she then bought a copy for herself!

message 3590: by Tati (new)

Tati I don't borrow books, ever. I refuse to crack the spine or anything of the sort. Most of my books still look like new.

And people make fun of me because of that...

message 3591: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90920 comments Mod
That is what I'm like. my dad used to work in a shop that sold books, and he could read a book, and nobody would know it had even been opened. people thought he was lying! My books that I bought new have been read and still look the same as when I got them.
I get annoyed when a book arrives from amazon or the book depository, and although its new they've managed to crease the cover, or damage it in some way. It's really annoying!

message 3592: by Abi (new)

Abi (abi_gr) | 27659 comments I can't even lend mine to my mum. I lent her one before, and she completely broke the spine, and creased the front the cover.

I refuse to lend mine out to anyone now.

Nobody believes that i've read most of mine either.
I was ordering a book while one of my cousins was here, and she asked why i was buying new ones when i had about 350 to read, and loads on my kindle.
I told her i read about 300 of those, and she didn't believe me.

The only ones you can i've read are the huge ones, that break really easily.

I knocked down a massive pile in the works once, doing that. It was so embarrassing. :(

You have to get right to the back to find ones in good condition there... You have to have someone with you to hold piles of them for you really! Haha.

I don't mind buying used books. I'm too cheap to always buy new ones. I'm happy to buy a book that's a bit worse for wear if it's only costing me 50p. I've even had some that I only paid 20p for. It's difficult to find the ones you really want a lot of the time though.
