~Melissa~ Oh Gen hope you like Gone Girl I have that on my TBR need to get to it soon!!

message 202: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Welcome, Layla and Gen! The team is so excited to have you!! Good luck on your exams -Gen. And Layla, I have Assassins Creed on my TBR. Looked interesting. But have to admit that I read Lord of the Flies many years ago and have never hated a book quite as much as that. It's why I almost never read distopian literature. Scarred me forever LOL!!

@Melissa- no worries on when you start Deadly Game. I started it and then couldn't put it down. I'll be ready to chat whenever you finish! And I completely agree with you on 2nd Grave. It was okay. I will keep reading in the series, but I'm in no hurry.

message 203: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ I've heard that book 3and 4 of the series are much better than #2. Hopefully they are correct but I think I will get them out of the library instead of spending my $$ on them ☺

message 204: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments I have Gone Girl on my tbr too. But I'm not sure if I will like that genre. I've heard all the characters are unlikeable!

message 205: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Great job everyone! It's hard to believe we are only 9 days into the new year and we have checked in 134 books.

I have a one small reminder - please check to see if your profile is public. If it is not, please either add me or another team captain (Rachel, Leslie, Vi) as a friend. We need to see your shelves in order to verify your books. Happy Reading!

Thank you!

Just finished The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and am about to start A Wallflower Christmas (Wallflowers, #5) by Lisa Kleypas .

message 207: by Donna (new)

Donna Wolczyk | 75 comments I know this comment doesn't really belong here, but I'm not sure where to post it. Can someone tell me what exactly a buddy read is and how they work? Unless I missed it, I don't really see a section on them, I have an idea of how it works, but was just wondering if there are more details. Thanks all!! :)

message 208: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Leslie and I belong to the group called TheChallenge Factory on GR every month they have a thread where you list the books you are hoping to get to and would like to "buddy" with someone. You and your partner "read" the book together and share comments or thoughts as you go along. Leslie and I started buddy reading with Game of Thrones and then have continued that series together. Tons of fun and for me personally helps me keep going when I'm reading those really long books. Hope that helped.

I think Gone Girl is one of those books you either really like or you really don't. I am one of the ones who really liked it but it was more about the discussion points afterwards. One warning - I found the first 40 pages really slow but then suddenly it starts to pick up.

Thank you!
And I wouldn't recommend Assassin's Creed, I didn't really liked the book. As for Lord of the flies, I can't say it's one of my favorites, but I did like it.

Donna, what Leslie said is pretty much it. Every "buddy read" is a little bit different. Some people arrange ahead of time the chapters they will read each day and take turns posting discussion questions, others are not quite so formal on one or both those points. It sometimes follows along like a BOM here in NBRC, but was a book that didn't win the vote.

message 212: by Reed (new)

Reed (reedraab) Hey Layla! I was just about to tell you how much I LOVED Assassin's Creed: Renaissance but I see you didn't really like it. I'm sorry to hear that. Do you play the video games?

And Marguerite, I have A Wallflower Christmas but haven't had the chance to read it. I hope it's good! Let me know how it is!

message 213: by [deleted user] (new)

Katie so far I have read the first 5 chapters and so far it seems like a light read. You know a lot of fluff.

message 214: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments Thanks, Rebecca! Good to know. I know I skimmed the first few pages in the library first but it didn't really grab me. I was in the middle of a slump then and I was looking for a book to take me out of it. I'll be giving it another try though!

Katie the historical romance books I love is the ones set in the old west here in the USA and old England. They have romance in them but they are mainly history. As in they tell you how people lived back then and what they went through.

message 216: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Please don't judge the Wallflower Series by Lisa Kleypas by this book. It is one of the best historical romance series out there. Fluff, absolutely - but engaging and well written and sexy! Highly recommend them all. Lisa Kleypas also has some great contemporary romances as well.

Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas It Happened One Autumn (Wallflowers, #2) by Lisa Kleypas Devil in Winter (Wallflowers, #3) by Lisa Kleypas Scandal in Spring (Wallflowers, #4) by Lisa Kleypas

As to buddy reads - I completely agree with Melissa. They are great especially with the longer more difficult books (hint:Game of Thrones series)but are also fun with any book. I tend to be very casual about it, but some people are very structured and do questions for the participants. Which is also fun. I'm happy to share what I'm going to be reading if anyone wants to buddy read with me. It's easy to set up a thread.

message 217: by [deleted user] (new)

Leslie the thing about books is some will like them and there will be some that don't. Everyone has an opinion and not all opinions are the same. If everyone's opinion was the same the world would be a boring place.lol, smile

message 218: by [deleted user] (new)

Katie wrote: "Hey Layla! I was just about to tell you how much I LOVED Assassin's Creed: Renaissance but I see you didn't really like it. I'm sorry to hear that. Do you play the video games?"

I play a little, but I've never played the game in wich the book was based, maybe that was the problem.

message 219: by ~Leslie~ (new)

Completely agree with you, Marguerite! Just didn't want someone to not read the series based on this one book from it. I love hearing all the different opinions about books that people have.

message 220: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ just finished Allison Hewitt Is Trapped (Zombie, #1) by Madeleine Roux for a challenge. Don't think I would have finished it otherwise. Oh well onto a better (for me) book. Started both Blood Wager (Blood Destiny #1) by Connie Suttle and Deadly Game (GhostWalkers, #5) by Christine Feehan ~ enjoying them both!!

message 221: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Yea, Melissa!! Enjoy Deadly Game!!

message 222: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments Finished Murder under Cover (A Bibliophile Mystery, #4) by Kate Carlisle and And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper in the last couple days. Started both Crimson Frost (Mythos Academy, #4) by Jennifer Estep and Copper Beach (Dark Legacy, #1) by Jayne Ann Krentz today.

message 223: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Oh I keep hearing good things about And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper ~ did you like it Diane ~ Firefly??

message 224: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Hey guys. Thank you all for being so understanding of the school situation. I haven't touched any of my books since starting back. My last class on t, th is a 4000 level that ends at 6:30 so by the time I get back to my room I'm exhausted and need food lol. I'm planning on having a lazy weekend so I plan on reading then since I have all of my homework (assigned so far) completed. And to all others starting back: "may the odds be ever in your favor"

message 225: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished A Wallflower Christmas (Wallflowers, #5) by Lisa Kleypas and just started Life of Pi by Yann Martel .

message 226: by Donna (new)

Donna Wolczyk | 75 comments I just finished The Death of Bees by Lisa O'Donnell it was awesome!!!

message 227: by Reed (new)

Reed (reedraab) Marquerite wrote: "Katie the historical romance books I love is the ones set in the old west here in the USA and old England. They have romance in them but they are mainly history. As in they tell you how people lived back then and what they went through."

Oh I totally agree with you! I've been getting really into those type of books lately. I took my mom's copy of New York The Novel by Edward Rutherfurd and can't wait to tackle it soon as well as the second book in The Tea Rose series.

And Leslie I will definitely check out the whole Wallflower series since now I know it is one, I had no idea. Should I read them in order? I've read a few of Lisa Kleypas' books and I tend to enjoy them.

message 228: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments @Diane-Firefly: I've had Copper Beach by JAK on my nook for awhile and have been putting it off till I finish my Arcane challenge. I'm so jealous!

@Michelle - what are you studying? My kids always complain that they can't read for pleasure once school has started. It's definitely a challenge. Enjoy the weekend!

@Katie - I love straight up historical fiction as well!! One of my favorite authors is Sharon Kay Penman and another is Elizabeth Chadwick. Both write great books on English history.
And I have New York on my to read list for this year. I love Edward Rutherford! And the Tea Rose series is so good. Loved that as well.
As to the Wallflower series, they don't have to be read in order, I didn't the first time around. It always helps a little, but it's not necessary. They are such fun books.

message 229: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments @Donna: I've been seeing The Death of Bees everywhere and it looks really interesting. I just put it on my hold list at the library - will let you know what I think of it.

@Diane-Firefly: Did you like Murder under Cover? Have you read the others in the series?

message 230: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Little Women and loved it.
Now I can't decide if I read The Age of Miracles or Cloud Atlas first.

message 231: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments @Melissa - yes, I did like And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper it was a fun quick read.

@Leslie - Copper Beach (Dark Legacy, #1) by Jayne Ann Krentz has been good so far, I'm already 3/4s through it. I had to stop the JAK challenge because it started hitting books I'd loaned out.

@Rebecca - Yes, I like that series. I like the characters and learning about bookbinding is interesting. I just picked up the next two books in the series. Murder under Cover (A Bibliophile Mystery, #4) by Kate Carlisle

message 232: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments I understand, Diane! That happened to me with another challenge. I'm looking forward to reading JAK books when the Arcane challenge is over.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 775 comments i finished We Bought a Zoo The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Change Their Lives Forever by Benjamin Mee , benjamin mee...3*s

Did you ever see the movie? It was so cute!! I loved it.

message 235: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Leslie wrote: "
@Michelle - what are you studying? My kids always..."

I am a double major in psychology and studio art. It is really hard to read for fun when classes have started :/ I meant to start reading hours ago but I've been doing research for a psych study.

message 236: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments I completely understand. One of my daughters, who is still in college, is a music major and was going to major in psychology. But it's too hard to double major with music. Studio Art seems challenging as well, I'm sure.

I loved that movie and Matt Damn as well:D

message 238: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, a rare instance where the movie was better than the book. LOL!

message 239: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments I finished Maisie Dobbs (Maisie Dobbs, #1) by Jacqueline Winspear yesterday. The WW era was so realistically portrayed. The mystery part was weak but I'm interested in continuing the series.

I've started Present Danger by Susan Andersen for another challenge. I'll be starting His Very Own Girl by Carrie Lofty as its also set in a WW period.

message 240: by Alley (new)

Alley (alleycatfish) | 198 comments I've finished Obsessed by Susan Andersen and 77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz.

77 Shadow street was an audiobook - I haven't listened to one in a while and wanted to try it out. Audiobooks make me so tired. I don't know if it was the fact that someone was reading a book to me or that I found the book itself slightly boring that made me sleepy. I'll try again with something else soon. Audiobooks are so handy when knitting - I really want them to work.

message 241: by [deleted user] (new)

so over the last few days I finished Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent Rogue (Shifters, #2) by Rachel Vincent Pride (Shifters, #3) by Rachel Vincent and i'll be starting Prey (Shifters, #4) by Rachel Vincent and Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1) by Morgan Rhodes

I'm just loving these Werecats :D

message 242: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Wow, my TBR is growing with all the books mentioned! I'm going to have to try the books with werecats!
And Vi, I love historical mysteries. I've heard of the Maisie Dobbs series but never read them.

I have finished several books lately and started some others.
I've finished Canyons of Night (Looking Glass Trilogy,#3, The Arcane Society,#12) by Jayne Castle Love Bites (Argeneau, #2) by Lynsay Sands and The Recruit (Highland Guard, #6) by Monica McCarty
The Recruit is my only 5 star read so far. I love Highlander romances and this one is good because the author does great research as well as write a great sexy story.
I am now reading An Affair with Mr. Kennedy (The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard, #1) by Jillian Stone Thunder & Roses (Fallen Angels #1) by Mary Jo Putney and will be starting I Own the Dawn (The Night Stalkers, #2) by M.L. Buchman
Happy Reading weekend everyone!!

message 243: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Finished both Deadly Game (GhostWalkers, #5) by Christine Feehan and Blood Wager (Blood Destiny #1) by Connie Suttle last night. Enjoyed both very much. Love the Ghostwalker series. Blood Wager is the first in a new to me series and new to me author - can't wait to get to book 2 in the series.

Started Tart (Delicious, #2) by Lauren Dane and will be starting Me and My Ghoulfriends (Larue Donavan #1) by Rose Pressey

message 244: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Blood Wager looks so interesting, Melissa!

message 245: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments I finished both Copper Beach (Dark Legacy, #1) by Jayne Ann Krentz and Crimson Frost (Mythos Academy, #4) by Jennifer Estep and they both got 4 stars.

Just started Sealed with a Curse (Weird Girls, #1) by Cecy Robson . Really liking the strange powers the sisters have.

message 246: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Leslie wrote: "Blood Wager looks so interesting, Melissa!"

It really was!! It is one of the series challenges in TCF group. They are all pretty inexpensive on the nook:)

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Life of Pi by Yann Martel . The book started out very dry reading but half way through the book the pace picked up and became very interesting.

Just started Wyoming Fierce by Diana Palmer .

message 248: by Michelle (last edited Jan 13, 2013 08:44AM) (new)

Michelle I FINISHED A CLASH OF KINGS! I never thought I'd see this day hahaha A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin The only problem is, I just realized it won't count here since I started it a while back :( dang

message 249: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Congratulations, Michelle!! Sorry it won't count here, but happy that you finished it. Reading that series is like climbing a mountain range. A few moments of exhilaration, but often just hard work. And yet it's there, so I'm doing it.

message 250: by Rebecca NJ (last edited Jan 13, 2013 02:33PM) (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments I had a fairly productive weekend. I finished The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey and Wicked Appetite (Lizzy & Diesel, #1) by Janet Evanovich .

@Michelle - bummer it won't count here but I am sure you are glad it is off your shelf. I haven't tackled this series yet - it is on my TBR pile. Now you have to work on A Storm of Swords :)

@Marguerite - Life of Pi is one of those I want to read some day. Have you seen the movie yet?

@Diane ~Firefly~ - Sealed with a Curse seems interesting. I've added it to my list!

You guys are all bad on my to-be-read pile :)
