Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments Okay team it looks like we are all set. It sounds like a nice selection of books. Enjoy your books. I'll probably be able to read mine this weekend during football. Hubby is going to be out of town so it will just be me, my dog and my books.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I look forward to reading the reviews. I've never heard of any of those - that's what I love about this game! And I will definitely have my book read this weekend. It'll be a slow football weekend for me - Saints aren't playing and neither is LSU. So sad!

message 56: by Sheila (last edited Nov 30, 2012 05:32PM) (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments I'm absolutely shocked that LSU isn't in the SEC championship game.

I listen to audiobooks during football. Actually I'm doing that right now during the UCLA/Stanford game.

message 57: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Waiting for Alabama-Georgia to start. Sheila, my oldest daughter works at Stanford and my brother's best friend is the Ass't AD at Stanford. He was on the sidelines at their last home game. So much fun.
Finishing up a book and then getting ready to start the one for the team!

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments I listened to the first half of my book during the Oklahoma State/Baylor Game and am planning on finishing it during the SEC game and then start another book for the Big Ten game. I love Saturdays and Sundays in the Fall.

For 37 years I worked 2nd shift on weekends and HATED trekking off to work during football season. Now that I have retired I am LOVING IT.

I'll probably post my book review tonight or tomorrow.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments Week 1 - Item called - Clothing - Tie

Finished 12/1

Double Shot (A Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery, #12) by Diane Mott Davidson Double Shot by Diane Mott Davidson (large print edition)

This is # 12 in the Goldy Bear Catering mystery series. In this story Caterer Goldy Schulz finds herself accused of killing her ex-husband. Someone seems bent on framing her. If you like the culinary cozies by Joanne Fluke you would enjoy this series. The one irritating thing is when the story stops while she cooks and they list the ingredients. This is particularly annoying when listening to the audiobook version and can't just skip ahead. I give it ★★★½'s

Weather - Rainbow - Rainbows shimmered across the walls of Arch's room page 149

Clothing - Tie★ - He wore a pink oxford cloth shirt, a patterned gold and green silk ★tie★ and khaki pants page 33

Body Parts - Curly hair - I certainly hoped Ginger had not heard the insensitive comments about the way her curly orange hair matched her unfashionable orange taffeta dress page 40

Misc. - Musical Instrument - I'd barely been able to deal with a stream of demands for an electric guitar page 36

Only Yours (Fool's Gold, #5) by Susan Mallery
12/2/12 **** stars
Tie p.22 (his Tie was loose)
Snow p. 135 (crushed by snow)
Tail p.17 (Fluffy wagged her tail)
Paper p.106 (reading in the paper)

I love beauty and the beast stories. They touch something deep inside me. And number 5 in the Fool's Gold series has a lovely Beauty and the Beast storyline. Montana is one of the triplets in this town of too many women. She is asked to make Simon feel at home in their town so he will decide to stay. He is there on a visiting doctor program and is treating young burn victims. He is also a burn victim but there is more scarring on the inside than the outside. Montana falls hard and hopes she can heal him, but he resists. Fool's Gold is a special little town and I love getting to know all the people. The author writes like she knows these people intimately and it feels like a real place. Easy humor, easy writing style make for a wonderful story.

Amanda A | 723 comments Sheila, I have read the first book in the Goldy Bear mystery series and keep meaning to get back to the second book. I enjoy the Hannah Swensen series too.

Leslie, I recently read that book and enjoyed it too. I love the Fool's Gold series and always want to move there after reading another installment in it.

How I Came to Sparkle Again by Kaya McLaren
Finished 12/2
4★

Jill Anthony finds herself at a crossroads in her life after losing her baby and discovering her husband was unfaithful. She ends up in the small ski town of Sparkle, Colorado with her uncle and old friends to help her heal. Ten year old Cassie Jones is heartbroken and grieving the loss of her mother to cancer and her father doesn't know how to help her. Their journey to help each other heal is a heartwarming story. A colorful cast of characters, especially the guys in the "Kennel", keep it entertaining. The ending is predictable, but uplifting at the same time. Kaya McLaren is a new to me author and I will definitely look for more of her books.

Rainbow: When they were done eating cake, they went a little closer to the waterfall, enough to feel some spray, enough to see rainbows above them everywhere. ~ Page 321

Tie: I made duct tape shorts to go with my duct tape vest and tie. ~ Page 148

Curly Hair: Jill couldn't see his eyes, but she saw the very top of his head, his curly brown hair cut short and the places at his temple where his hairline had begun to recede dramatically. ~ Page 3

Emergency Vehicle: Next to city hall was the fire station where an aid car was backing in. ~ Page 72

Sapphire Blue (The Ruby Red Trilogy, #2) by Kerstin Gier

Review:
There were things that kinda got to me in this one. For instance, how all the other Guardians treat Gwen like she's a bother and a nuisance. I mean come on, she's also part of this group! I also would like to smack some sense in Gwen's aunt Glenda and her cousin Charlotte for all the rude remarks they make about Gwen. I mean come on, Gwen wasn't prepared for this like Charlotte was whom everyone thought would carry the time traveling gene and be the Ruby, but for real reasons unknown, Gwen's mother kept that secret about Gwen's birth all her life! Other than all those things, I love this series! I think it's interesting to learn about what people did or wear during the time periods where they time travel to. The third and final book, Emerald doesn't come out til Fall of 2013! I think that's a long wait because book two left me with unanswered questions that I want answers to and I want to know how this series ends! I'm glad this series got translated from German to English because then I wouldn't have read this wonderful fantastic series then!

Items:
Tie:"They just sat about in suits and ties, talking." (Page 146)

Rain:It was cool, with a light drizzle of rain falling, and if there were any streetlights at all this period, they'd gone wrong this evening. (Pgae 256)

Curly hair:He pushed a curly strand of brown hair back from his forehead, and I instinctively held my breath. (Page 42)

Musical instrument: "He is going to delight us later by playing his violin, while Lavina can hardly wait to sing to the accompaniment of our dear Mr. Merchant." (Page 260)

message 72: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments How's everyone doing? I'm excited for Friday to come to get started on our next book. I hope everyone was able to take a peak at the Spreadsheet and make sure you were all credited with the right things. It looks good to me.

If we want to do any kind of strategy regarding uncalled items it looks like we could get an uncalled point if Leslie can find curly hair this week. My experience from last round was that if I wanted to find a specific item I couldn't find it or if I did find it then the item called was in that same category so I couldn't claim it.

message 73: by Amanda A (new)

Amanda A | 723 comments I'm ready for Friday too. My items were credited correctly on the spreadsheet.

We are halfway done with musical instrument. I'll look for it this week, if something in that category is not called.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments Today's item is Body Parts: Bone

That means we will have to wait another week to fill in curly hair :(

Maybe we can try and fill in the items that are half done.

We actually got lucky because none of us had claimed bone yet. Several of the other teams already claimed bone but now they will have to claim it again this week.

I think whoever still needs to claim curly hair, can still do it for the extra three items we can claim after we claim what was chosen for us to get that extra point.

message 76: by Sheila (last edited Dec 07, 2012 07:17AM) (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments Nope, bone is the same category as curly hair. Only 1 item per category can be claimed each week and this week it has to be bone. (I learned that the hard way last round Amy)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments I'll be reading:

Cross (Alex Cross, #12) by James Patterson Cross by James Patterson

and looking for snow, hood, bone and emergency vehicle.

I think hood is a toughie. Usually it is refering to a car hood or a neighborhood or a lowlife character. I did a search and this book mentions a hooded sweatshirt.

message 78: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Curly hair and bone. That doesn't work, unfortunately. They are both in the same group. So sad. But I did find some other items that y'all claimed last week.
I'll be reading The Sweethearts' Knitting Club (Twilight, Texas, #1) by Lori Wilde

Review:
Nice, contemporary romance set in a fictitious small town in Texas. Because it is the start to a series, we are introduced to all the quirky towns people and told their history. Flynn is the heart and soul of the town. She has taken care of her family after her mother died and her father was an alcoholic. She takes care of everyone. She hold a monthly knitting group at her house even though she can't knit and she has plans to open a knitting store all because this was what her mother wanted for her. She also dates the Sheriff of the county and has for the past 10 years even though she won't marry him. But everyone expects her to. But hold on, the town bad boy is about to get out of prison, after being sent there by the Sheriff, and has come back to town. There's some heat to this story, and the characters and the town are all likeable. The only problem is that Flynn is not terribly likeable. She is so weak willed and it's a trifle icky to think of her dating one guy for 10 years while pining after another. But still a decent story and enjoyable.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments Week 2 - Body Parts/Bone called 12/7

Cross (Alex Cross, #12) by James Patterson Cross by James Patterson

Finished 12/9

In this the 12th in the Alex Cross series it finds Alex changing careers from FBI to private counseling. He is called into consult on a serial rapist turned murderer that possibly is the same man that murdered his wife more than 10 years ago. I like this series a lot and am slowly working my way through them. James Patterson and his minions seem to write them quicker than I can read them though. I give it ★★★★★'s.

Snow - The mail and whatnot must go through, rain, snow, sleet, death whatever page 308

Hood - with a hooded sweatshirt, he was just another Bobo jogger page 157

★Bone★ - I was dragging, wasted, bone tired page 89

Emergency Vehicle - while a squad car watched over the house. page 45

Whispers at Moonrise (Shadow Falls, #4) by C.C. Hunter

Finished: December 10th
Rating: 5 stars

Review:
This series is amazing! In this book, Kylie learns more about her paranormal/supernatural heritage. This book had me laughing at some parts. I couldn't believe the ending that Kylie left Shadow Falls to try and work things out after she gets her heart broken by Lucas the werewolf while all throughout this book, Derek the half fae was there for her a lot more than Lucas. I really can't wait for Chosen at Nightfall because the book summary says that Kylie is going to return to Shadow Falls and finally make a decision between the two boys that love her. I really don't know who I want Kylie to choose: Lucas or Derek. I like them both even thought they each have their own faults and I kinda understand why Lucas did what he did.

Items:
Bone: "No," Hannah muttered and her hands, more bone than flesh, grabbed Kylie by the shoulders. (Page 169)

Bra: He slipped the tank top over her head, discarding her bra at the same time, and his eyes shifted downward to what he'd uncovered. (Page 235)

Mist/Fog: A girl raced to escape the thick mist. (Page 113)

Fruit: Helen, looking a bit squeamish, had a bloody apple in her other hand and a bloody knife sitting in her lap. (Page 315)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Cha-ching, there goes another book on to my TBR pile. Thanks, Amy!!

And, Sheila - I have the first Alex Cross on my pile to read soon. I've never read any James Patterson, but I've heard good things.

message 97: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 1 comments Patterson and his minions/cowriters crank about 4 a month so there is no way to keep up, but his series are wonderful. Women's Murder Club, Michael Bennett and Alex Cross are my favorites but he writes a lot of standalones as well that are great as well.

I have a folder on my computer that is labeled fave five and his audiobooks are in there.

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 675 comments @Sheila: As I said in my review, I love this series.

@Leslie: If you don't mind love triangles, then I say read it. I always like reading about kids being in summer camp or boarding school and being all types of paranormal from werewolf to vampire to shapeshifter to fae to whatever. But, in this series, Kylie is a different type of paranormal that you find out what she is at the end of book three, but then in book four, you learn more about that thing.

message 99: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Amy - I normally avoid YA but I've been reading more of it lately. I have 4 children - all young adults and get enough of it from them! Also, I have a challenge in 2013 to read 12 YA books. So I'm looking for good ones! And most of what I read these days is PNR/UF, so this looks right up my alley!
